Answer:
Thanks Buckshot 3280, weinter and PC-GURU. Before sending the laptop back for the third time I uninstalled all NVIDEA drivers and reinstalled them from the HP web site rather than through Windows Update. That seems to have sorted out the problem but I'll keep an eye on event log.

I have a new HP G60 214 EM 2 GHz AMD Athlontm X2 laptop which I have upgraded to Windows 7 32 bit with the HP upgrade programme. It has already been returned for repairs - battery replaced, hard drive replaced and W/S (sic) fan replaced.

Every two or threee reboots the following error is recorded in Event Log. I've trawled the web for more information but now found any. There does not appear to be any performance degradation.

My question is should I be worried and return for the third time? Is this really a hardware problem?

A fatal hardware error has occurred.

Erm... it is NOT OVERHEATING.
I experienced it before.
Reason was that Chipset driver not properly installed SMBus/Management Driver not installed.
Small case just go look for the latest updated Chipset driver download and install it.
Even if you don't nothing bad will happen.

well, if it has an ATI chipset...good luck installing the chipset driver, it will never install.....it will look like it did....won't through any errors but it will still show up as not installed in the Full CCC software suite.

I had the same error with my 955BE on a CIIIF MoBo......check this thread out....I can't remember if I reported the solution or not but maybe it will give you some direction.... Link to thread.

*EDIT*

For me it appeared to be a driver issue while running Lavalyst Everest Ultimate and Crossfire. Most likely a driver issue for you as well. Are you current on all of your drivers?? I would check with HP's support site to make sure. Don't go to ATI to get your chipset driver.

I spoke too soon. Two days later the Fatal Hardware Error was back in Event Log so I'm now guessing that the earlier cooling problem affected the Northbridge. I've returned the laptop (again) for repair under warranty.

You are using a NForce Motherboard as well?
I used to have the same issue on my Aspire 4530 also nForce board but 9100M G instead of your 8200M G.
Instead of using dated Acer Drivers I used NForce Driver from Nvidia.
Error never appeared again.
If it was a hardware error it should have issues such as hangs and unintended reboots.
Because of that I am 100% sure it is a driver error.
Note there are 2 drivers in the motherboard driver installer package that causes this.
Nvidia PCI Bus Management and Nvidia SMBus Management both are critical to having no errors.
Sometimes driver package installers left out 1 of the 2 drivers.
