I have a PC, but with the situation I have, I think I am going to be wanting to upgrade using a laptop processor if I can (a Mobile Athlon XP).
I have an ASUS A7N266-VM motherboard with onboard LAN, sound, AGP, and so forth (the nForce chipset).
I updated my BIOS to the latest stable, and wanted to upgrade to a Thouroughbred Athlon XP 2600+ (266 MHz bus, 256 KB L2 cache). It is looking to me like these are disappearing from the market, and like I am not going to be able to find one that is not refurbished. I ordered one a few weeks ago, and the core had knicks in it-- I got the CPU to POST just fine and load Windows, but I want to number-crunch with it, and I got our friend Mr. BSOD whenever I would turn on a distributed computing project (which brings CPU usage to 100%).
So, not wanting to step down to an XP 2400+ Thouroughbred for my upgrade, I'm looking at Mobile Athlon XP 2600's now.
Do they only have to be compatible pinouts and bus speeds? Will a Mobile 2600+ work in my particular motherboard? (I don't mind if not all the Mobile features are available) Is there even a faster Mobile Athlon XP that still uses the 266 MHz bus?
