Looking at getting a Compaq v2000 and it has this...

Sempron 3100+
256mb ram
40gb hd
56k modem

Will buy another 512mb ram to put in myself
will buy a linksys wireless g with speed booster card.

Question is is this any good and got any benchmarks on this cpu? Wondering because the upgrade to the turion is $95 Computer will be used strictly for internet/word processing for school. And DVDs, we are getting the brightview monitor.

Yes that should be enougth power for internet/word processing for school and you will get the same battery life as the Turion. But i recomend you to order the laptop with Wireless built in since it is better than have to buy an external card, also add the 512MB like you just said because it will give you the power to manage and run different programs at the same time.
