So a friend of mine posted this question' "> at the Straight Dope and I realized I didn't know nearly enough to help him out. I'm puzzled over a few (seemingly basic) questions about Socket A.

First of all, a summary of his problem. He has a AHM0900AVS3B -- a 900MHz mobile (25W) Athlon, running in a GA-7VMM (Gigabyte Socket A board using the VIA KT-133 chipset). The FSB on this system is flexible between 100 and 133 MHz, but the chip code at the end -- the "3" -- says that the processor is rated for 200MHz. When he sets the FSB to 100MHz, the chip runs at 500MHz, instead of the standard 900MHz.

(1) Does this mean his multiplier is currently at x5? Or is his FSB actually running at 200MHz, and his multiplier is x2.5?

(2) Does he need a motherboard that can deliver 200MHz FSB before he can take advantage of the 900MHz speed?

(3) If yes, that implies that his multiplier would have to drop down to x4.5, doesn't it? Will a motherboard that can do this for him also be able to detect the right multiplier?

Are all the drivers for the motherboard installed? For some reason, my mobile wouldn't go all the way up untill i installed the drivers, no matter what i had it set at.
