My Compaq R3000 DTR Notebook recently had a display driver failure. It is the second R3000 DTR in the household to have the display driver failure.

In my R3000 is the Athlon 64 3200+ for DTR notebooks. I believe it uses socket 754. Can I take this processor out, put it into a motherboard for desktops, get the right heat sink and fan, and try to build a media center PC out of it? Any recommendation on motherboard supplier?

The other R3000 (my daughter) has the XP 2800+ processor, I believe. It has been a couple of years. It appears to be socket 754 also...

Funny thing is Bill Gates got me as the OEM Win XP is not transferrable....

You probably could do that, as many have in the past. The problem is that not all s754 boards had an adequate BIOS that would recognize the mobile CPU. Do a Google Search for "Mobile Athlon CPU 754 motherboard" or something like that...

Your second problem, if you do determine a suitable board, is to find one. S754 boards are becoming scarce.

Do your homework, and have a little fun building it...
