I have an HP Pavilion dv2000 series with a Turion 64 x2 process, and with disk partitions running XP and Vista.

I cannot get Windows 98 to run, not even on an external IDE drive (not on the SATA drive). The initial flash screen for Windows 98 appears, and several devices load (in safe or normal start mode), and then a message appears saying that I don't have enough memory, and suggesting that I remove devices from my "config.sys" or "autoexec.bat" files to free up RAM. I've done so, in various combinations, and still no luck.

Windows 98 does install onto the main hard drive, and also onto an external USB drive, from which I'd like to boot it.

There are a few programs that I need to run on Windows 98, from time to time, and I'd like to run the OS with this processor.

How?

Does the dual core processor confuse Windows 98?

Can I run Windows 98 with this processor?

Are there switches I must throw? -- in the BIOS? in Windows "ini" files? -- or, drivers and switches I must throw in the boot files (config.sys, or autoexec.bat)?

Thanks!

Vmware or other such program, I would think. Best way IMO.

I'd doubt that dualcore's the problem, my guess would be that it would just detect only one core.

Processor speed and lack of drivers...

There is a patch for W98 for processors running over 350MHz <-- yeah, mega hertz, remember what the fastest cpu was at the time of W98 release...

Thank you.

Both to 444 and MD Willington.

I'll check around for drivers. And the patch.

About MHz vs. GHz - yes, I remember. I thought I went to heaven when I traded in my old AT running at 12 MHz for one running 16!

I do have one DOS partition that I didn't mention, amongst the other two partitions. Say "DOS" in Best Buy and the sales staff shrugs. Probably over $2,0000 invested and kept in an array of DOS office and utility programs (plus games) from the old days. The DOS partition blazes on the new Turion 64 x2. WordPerfect for DOS 6.0 still reads and writes all the WP Windows files. I switch to DOS for fun once in awhile.

444 - VM and virtualization are new concepts and platforms to me. Your post about VM prompted to me study at the VM website. Amazing. I may give it a try. Looks promising.

Thanks to both of you.

Try a streamlined install of XP. It will run software all the way back to Win95 and all the current software.

I have Windows 98Second Edition installed on a OLD 900 Mhz Desktop,
and it runs OK.
The hard drive i have to format , because the Win98SE don't use NTFS partition

I may try setting up a dos partition on my laptop later and trying this...

I'd imagine if you used a dos 6.22 boot CD with cd rom support, and copied the Win98 CD to the FAT partition on the DD, and installed from there, it would install.. My only worry is that the bootloader could corrupt the vista/xp loaders.

If you really really wanted 98, I'd install DOS 6+ first, then try the cd copy to the HDD install, after 98 is installed, then install XP on a secondary partition, and Vista last of all (if you wanted triple boot) You always want to load oldest to newest to allow for the multiple boot setup to complete easilly.

I misread the initial question.

It could be that your manufacturer skipped installing any conventional RAM on the motherboard. I think that Dos and 3.1/95/98 require that 640k. Also, I have never tried starting 98 on a machine with more than 1024 ram either, so that could cause an issue.
