I have a HP. The AMD athlon CPU fried. I'm looking around the net and I found a 1.3 GHZ 200 mhz FSB Socket A. My old CPU was a 1.0 GHZ Socket A 200mhz FSB. Since I am having no luck finding the original 1.0, and, a tech said I could upgrade to a 1.3, I am wondering if these processors are interchangeable? The mother board mfg is called Trigem....that is all I know because HP is demanding money for any further info. The system is a 1999 Pavillion XT 936. The specs I listed on the processors is just a cut and paste....I am totally ignorant about processor specs. Please help.

If it's a 200MHz FSB-part(OPN: 'A1300AMS3B', it should work without any problems
Also, EBay is a very good source for older/outdated stuff if you insist on a 1.0GHz-part

The number on my old processor is A1000AMT3B....1st row on chip.
2nd: ARGA 0116UPGW
3rd: Y6217430389.

I'm assuming the "OPN" is represented by the numbers in the 1st row. These numbers are not consistent with the OPN you listed in the previous post. Please explain the signifigance of the numbers and what aspects of the number need to be the same to insure compatability. Thanks.

What I listed is the OPN the 1.3GHz-part you were looking at should have in order to be compatible.

Since your motherboard/chipset apparently only supports a 100MHz FSB(FrontSideBus), the last figure of the OPN has to be a 'B' for the CPU to be compatible.

Thank you for your patience with my ignorance and your help. One more thing....I have read things about doing something with the BIOS when switching processors. Do you know what that is about?....will that be necessary?....do you have a link to a document that would explain this? Once again, thank you for your assistance. You too, Hawke

Usually, it is recommended to update your BIOS to the latest version before you upgrade your CPU to a newer/faster model.
With brand-name computers(like HP, Compaq, Gateway, etc.), you often encounter the problem that BIOS-updates are either not available at all or that the updates are often outdated and/or of little help when trying to upgrade your CPU.

In your case, however, i don't think this is necessary as there is not really any difference between a 1GHz and 1.3GHz Athlon(except for clockspeed)
