Hi all, I'd like to upgrade my aging AMD 650MHz processor to at least 1.8GHz, what things do I absolutely need to keep in mind? Like: bus speed, power supply, BIOS, etc??
Mainly, which processor would fit the motherboard below?
Here's the system information, some good hints would be very much appreciated! (if you need more I'll do my best to dig it out)
Thanks!
Current CPU: CPU Type AMD Athlon, 650 MHz (3.25 x 200) CPU designation Pluto, K75 CPU Stepping A1 L1 Code Cache 64 KB L1 Datencache 64 KB L2 Cache 512 KB (Built-In, Half-Speed)
Motherboard properties: Motherboard ID 11/26/2002-AMD-75X-W977-6A6S2B09C-00 Motherboard Name Biostar M7MKA
Front Side Bus properties: Bus type DEC Alpha EV6 Bus width 64 Bit actual tact rate t 100 MHz (DDR) Effective tact rate 200 MHz Bandwidth 1600 MB/s

You have a Slot A motherboard. The fastest CPU made for Slot A was 1GHz, and that is very expensive and rare to find now. I don't think it'd be worth changing the CPU.
If you want to go to 1.8GHz, you'd have to replace almost the entire computer.
What do you want more performance for? If you've only got 128mb and WinXp, adding another 256mb would help alot. If your hard drive is only 5200rpm, replacing it wth a 7200rpm drive would be lots faster. Your CPU would probably overclock to 105MHz x 6.5x = 682.5MHz
