Hi guys and gals,

It's my first time here as I'm having lots of speed issues with my old PC. I will be (hopefully) getting a new one for Xmas from hubby but this PC is so painfully slow it's been an ordeal browsing for new PC's online today! It was bought either 2000 or 2001 but it's actually served my needs perfectly and I wouldn't even bother considering getting a new one if this wasn't getting so bad.

Basically I would like to know what my options are for a temporary measure to stop my PC going snail like. I wondered if updating the drivers for my AMD processor may help as in the Sys Prop they are dated as 2001???

I have the specs from Win XP's utitlity which I shall type below:

System model: MS-6316
Bios Version: American Megatrends Inc. A6316MS V1.0 B7 Time Computer Sys.
RAM: 256.25 MB (I know it's very slow).
Processor: AMD Athlon.
Version: x86 Family 6 Model 2 Stepping 1.
Speed: 698 Mhz (again I know it's a low speed!.
Hard disk: 27GB free space 4.44 GB.

Running Win XP Pro.

Now I had a look in the syst properties to see what drivers were under AMD and all I could find were these....

AMD-751 Processor to AGP Controller (not sure what this is?).
Driver Date: 07/01/2001 from MS.
Version: 5.1.2600.0

AMD-756 Power Management Controller - no drivers installed.

Is there anything I can do to help until I get a new PC? Or am I doomed to going slow till then?

Hmm a PC of those specifications should not be painfully slow for web browsing.

This makes me think the problem is either the internet connection or your computer has malware on it. Try this:

Do you have dial-up internet? Sometimes older modems become faulty and slow down to a crawl with time.

PS CPUs do not use drivers except in special cases; yours shouldn't need drivers.

Thank you for your reply but I made a mistake in my original posting, it sounds like it's my internet connection that's painfully slow but I meant that my actual PC is painfully slow, I was browsing for new PC's yesterday online and I like to flick between pages of others sites I'm browsing and my PC takes ages to refresh/redraw or even to become active again going from program to program.

I have Spybot installed and I'm just d/l the latest updates now so I can check my PC, I have various other cleaners installed like CCleaner and Temp Cleaner, which I use regularly to keep my PC clean of crap, but I'm not sure what to do about the speed of the actual PC and how to make it (if at all possible) slightly quicker until I can get a new computer?

sounds like you have a slot a thunderbird 700mhz (early Athlon)...which was a pretty fast chip in it's day, but with only 256mb of RAM, WinXP Pro will run slow....
one thing you can do is eliminate some of the excess off your hard drive, a hard drive that full will be slow. Once you've trimmed that, defrag

...also, check the lower right hand corner of your screen...every program you have down there is using up some of your memory..if you can disable things like your printer monitor, messenger programs, anti-virus (I update and scan manually)...it isn't enough to just exit out of the program, you have to force windows to stop loading them at startup...

one last thing to do is to trim your services, windows 2000 and xp come with a bunch of services that run in the background and use up memory cycles that you can't afford to lose...disabling things like windows time, indexing service, wireless zero, messenger (not the IM)

one more last thing....turn off system restore, it will free up a lot of hard drive space

if RAM is the problem, you can buy 256mb modules fairly cheaply second hand. I'd guess yours takes PC133 SDRAM. Webbrowsing works fine for me with only 128mb of RAM and a similar CPU, but I do not have Windows XP Pro…

Isn't there a way to turn off the UI chrome to speed things up with Windows XP?
