Drivers are there. Drives are both Compaq. One is a cd 52x read only, the other a DVD-RW. I have tried changing order one cable, and hooking one on the same cable as the hard drive. Only the first drive on the second IDE is recognized in set up. If I connect to same cable as hard drive, system will not boot. Does not recognize the second (slave), regardless of which one I hook up. With just one on the cable, works fine, which ever it is. When I hook both at once to second IDE, the message is "first drive is not APTPI ready" and system only boots in safe mode.

Check the drive jumpers for Master/Slave.

Also check BIOS settings to make sure all IDE channels are set for Auto/Auto.
