I went ahead and ordered a amd KIII 380 from ebay $19.00. Installed the chip, changed the dip settings to 2.2vlts core voltage 2.0x(133mhz)Bus Ratio Setting Worked for about 20 minutes, ten the screen locked up with mouse. Powered down the machine. It never came back up. Beep sequence was 1 beep then 3 beeps followed by the same sequence of beeps again. I totally dismantled the laptop and removed the motherboard thinking that it was fried, was going to prrchase a replacement but before I went this route, I made a last ditch effort.
I changed the dip switches back to default and installed back the kII266 and on the bench connected to a external monitor I was able to get the post screen showing amd266 etc....I am going to try and rebuild the laptop back together to see if it still works...
If I do get the machine back to running state does anyone have a positive success story upgrading the CPU?

Any additional specific help would be greatly appreciated.

Latter K6-II(I) chips see a 2x multiplier as 6x. So it was probably running at 400MHz rather than 133MHz, or its rated 380MHz. Try the 4.5x setting and see if 300MHz works.

Once it is up and running again, try the latest Everest Beta (v.296 or greater) on it to see how the CPU is really set up. Also please post the MSR Dump here (right click on the bottom status bar...choose CPU Debug).

1 Beep, 3 Beeps is "Video Adapter Failure"...but obviously that isn't the case since an external monitor works so...

I spent about 2 hours rebuilding this contraption...My god it's easier & quicker to dismantle but putting it back together..Yippe....!

I must have taken it apart 3 times to place all the correct ribbon cables in the correct directions....

It's only been 2 days since dismantle, but I was able to peice it back. For some strange reason I have some left over screws. Who cares...I'm not looking to move satellites with this old clunker...!


I placed the LCD interface board first in backwards. I don't get any display just backlighting.
I probably took out the LCD interface board by reversing it at reinstallation.
I found one on ebay for 5 bucks...
Maybe the beep problem was video related...I hope the new lcd interface board solves the video problem that happened after the installation of the new cpu.


The laptop boots correctly, with a external monitor....
I am running windows me....
160 meg of ram....
most recent rompaqs installed.

Do you want me to run this software Everest beta...with the original cpu or the new one?

I still have no display only backlit....

But I did re-install the K6III 380 and set the bus ratio setting to 4.5X(300) instead of 2.0X(133) here is the everest..

Seemingly the vcore (CPU voltage) of 2.2v is ok to run it at 380MHz, but is unstable at 400MHz. AMD was cutting it finely. It'd probably be stable at 400MHz on 2.3v, but your laptop doesn't appear to have a jumper for that - someone other than me will have to tell you whether 2.4v is safe with your CPU, but that kind of heat isn't going to be nice in most laptops anyway.

If increasing the vcore isn't practical, then it might be possible there're hidden jumper settings. Often there're paterns to the jumper block, making it possible to figure out higher multipliers:

S4 S5 S6

2x * \ \
2.5x * * \
3x \ * \
3.5x \ \ \
4x * \ *
4.5x * * *

I'd try other combinations and see what turns up, like OFF ON ON.

A multiplier of 5.5x would give you 366MHz, which is almost the rated speed, and should work with the current 2.2v.

From the MSR Dump, Write Allocation is not set on your K6-III. You'll need to download a third-party program to set that, and other CPU features if you so desire them.

Other VCore settings are undocumented. You can try them at your own risk, and post a table once you find out what all the other settings come up as.

I understand but how would I figure out the switch combinations to get this multiplier

By just looking I see that there are only 8 possible solutions...

These are the only 2 switch combinations a see that are not being used...
How would I figure out the multiplier. I could just try the settings and post everest for the conclusions....

You may as well give them a go and see what those two do. My guess is they'll be 1.5x and 5x. The processor is very unlikely to be harmed from experimenting with the multipliers while on the standard voltage, whereas playing with the vcore is more risky.

You could set the EFER and MTRR's... but WA is the biggie. I'm sure you noticed a performance improvement already once that was enabled.

As eddaweaver says, give the other two multiplier settings a shot, and post back which is which.

selection 1 no good....

the machine begins to boot then 3 beeps then shutdown
selection 2 perfectamundo...

Now all i need to do is get my display back up and running.....I am waiting for the lcd interface board I purchased from a guy on e-bay. I hope that it will solve the display problem. I have backlighting...The brightness and contrast both work fine,jst no display. If you have any furtherspecific MSR tweek suggestions please let me know...

everything is working fine display works great!

the laptop survived and the cpu is ticking along....

You can set EWBE to MAX (Global).

To set the MTRR's, you have to look in the Device Manager to see what range the Video system is using as an LFB.

MTTR0 = VGA = 128kB at 000A:0000, Write Combined
MTTR1 = LFB = See Device Manager

How much RAM is installed?
128MB + 16MB = 144MB
WA = 08C10000 = 146,866,176MB

Well here we are again, several months after using the laptop the CPU in the computer locked up, same problem with the beeps. I removed the battery and installed the original CPU and set the factory dips back to default and were back up and running. I would have to say that the AMD K6-III 380 2.2V COREV3.3 worked for several months then quit. I think for now I'' simply continue using the laptop with its original 266.
