I have an athon 1400 processor, and want to determine for sure if it is good or bad. I believe I have eliminated all other hardware, as I have swapped everything else (different motherboard, ram, hd, cd).

The machine hangs when simply trying to install xp. I tried a couple different xp install cd's to make sure the media was not bad.

I was able to run a memtest for a number of hours from a dos boot cd and it ran fine with no errors.

So all I am left with is some way that I can create a boot floppy or cd and run a test program that will test my processor, hopefully there is such a thing.

Thanks!

The processor is probably ok. It sounds more like a power issue. List all the hardware components in the system and gets the power supply specs from the label on the side of the power supply.

The UBCD has a few stress testing programs http://www.ultimatebootcd.com/

yes, UBCD would be it, to test with.

A faulty IDE cable, wrongly jumpered, CD and/or HD, wrongly connected IDE cable are also potential culprits for hanging windows installs.
Maybe even a BIOS update can help, if the motherboard is an older generation, together with conflicting add on cards.

An update - I tried 2 different power supplies, one a brand new out of the box 430 watt antec - same issues generally.
The most consistent crash seems to happen at the point where you choose 'format for ntfs' during the windows install.
Again, I have tried different ata cables, and 4 different hard drives.
I even tried using only the slave or master bus.
Different motherboards too (2 of them).

I ran the UBCD processor burn in test, and yesterday it went up to 100k tests and hung.
Today I let it get to over 1 million with the new supply, assumed it was OK, but then it hung during format at 0%.

Any other ideas?

You could try to downclock the CPU before attempting the windows install, just to see if the install goes through.
But does sound a bit like the CPU has been cooked. Are the CPU core sides&corners physically intact? Is the CPU temp within reasonable limits?
