I have a Compaq Presario 5WV275 with an original Duron 750 processor (according to the manual and System diagnosis, tho' Compaq Partsurfer lists an Athlon 800 Hz). Can I substitute the processor with a Duron 1.4, which is available reasonably cheap? My son is desperate to play the Battlefield 1942 Secret Weapons of War extension, which will not install (the original game runs fine, now I have installed an NVidia 64Mb graphic card and 512Mb of RAM, so I can only assume the processor is the problem). Any help would be appreciated. I am no expert, so keep any reply simple.

I doubt this will be possible...
Unlike the older Durons(model 3/7 - up to 1.3GHz), the new 'Applebred' Durons(model 8, 1.4GHz and up) have a 133MHz FSB('FrontSide Bus', aka 'System Bus'.
Most likely, your motherboard/chipset doesn't support a 133MHz FSB...even if it did, there is prolly no BIOS-update to add support for the relatively new model 8 Durons.
I can't say for sure, tho, as there is typically very little documentation available for brand-name computers

I recommend you contact compaq and ask them what upgrades would be possible for you(if any).
