I Have a AMD K-6 II 550Mhz chip it runs fine but slow (Microsoft hellbender is reduced to a un playable slide show with hardware accelaration on,the game is kinda old and i have played it smoth as glass on 300Mhz computers.).i have win98se but cant overclock above 533Mhz. all i know is that i have is a V-Box with a ami bios(i realy think the motherboard is a pcchips for what it is worth). i tried to e-mail amd but no luck so far, help would be much appreciated.

Games are usually highly dependent on your videocard, so if the slower(300MHz) comps you mentioned had a better videocard, it is very well possible that the game was running smoother on them.
The amount of memory installed in your machine might play a role in this aswell.

What videocard do you have? Make sure your CPU is running at the speed it should be running(is it actually recognized as a 550MHz K6-2?) - you can check processor and bus speeds with a CPUID-utility like CPU-Z or WCPUID(search on google).

my video card is a sis530 w/3d accelration fetures.i mis typed the speed, i cant over clock above. i cant over clock above 533 w/97Mhz bus speed.i have 32mb of ram w/8mb going to the video card. i am expecting another 32mb stik of ram from e-bay any day now. 550Mhz is the maximum speed of the chip witch is printed on the processer itself,it has 64kb internal L1cache and 512kb external L2 cache. i curintly have it running @ 450Mhz w/100 mhz bus from 533Mhz w/97mhz bus and there is absoulty no change at all in the frame rate of the game(it runs smoothly with out 3d feutures enabled at 300-533mhz,witch confuses me,shouldent it run faster w/3d and not vice versa?), i would say it probly runs the equalevent to a pentuim 200mhz(AMD please dont kill me! ). could it be my mother board? any way, i realy apriceate you for takeing the time to help me.

IMO, there are two reasons for your machines' poor performance in games:

1 - You're using on-board shared-memory video which is really not suitable for modern games...especially as your solution is pretty old and you're only using 8MB of memory for it(i doubt allocating more memory would significantly speed things up, tho).
2 - You have only 32MB of RAM...not really sufficient for gaming - the extra RAM you're going to install should help a bit but again, there won't be a significant improvement of your frame-rate.

My suggestion would be to get a new videocard and possibly some more memory - 128MB or something would be nice(you can use PC133 SDRAM if your motherboard supports SDRAM, btw - it is fully backward-compatible and will run at PC100-speeds without problems).

As for the videocard, i would suggest something along the lines of a GeForce2/4 MX - not really a great card, but a *significant* improvement over your current on-board video solution.

ive ran pc-wizzard from cpu-z's web site and ran all benchmarks and holy crap every thing was so slow,it registard a pentium II as at least 5x faster than my amd k6-2 550 (witch is not at full speed,500Mhz w/100Mhz FSB).i tried to install 128 mb of pc133 sdram not to long ago and when i turned my computer on there was no activity at all the screen stayed on stand by as if the computer was off.my bios is the orignal one that came pre flashed,i tried to up date it from e-suport.com or somthing like that and they wanted "$40-$60" .as far as your new graphs card theroy i do not have any Agp slots what so ever,is there such a card that is compatable?i am working on getting my systems full specs as i type this mabye they will help out.

Did you install the 128MB stick on its own or did you use it together with your existing stick? Was it a known working stick?(tested and working fine in another system)

I recommend you run CPU-Z/SiSoft Sandra/AIDA32 to determine for sure whether your motherboard is the PCChips M598LMR or M599LMR, so you can get the correct BIOS-update.

the 128 mb stick of ram works fine in the computer i got it out of, i tried it on its own,it works,just not in my con puter ,my mother board is M599LMR pcchips.i also saw no ram speed in the bios like you mentioned,mabye in the upgrade

You will need a bootable DOS/Win9x floppy - put both the Flash-tool and .rom file on the disk, boot into DOS and run the Flash-tool.

i have flashed my bios but i still se no ram selction,as a matter the only change i have seen is the realese date .i wonder could it be my mother board,how can i find out if that is the cause oof it being slow.raw processing power is abnormaly low for this class of processer witch is why im wondering if th motherboard is the problem.

i found new drivers for my intergrated video and installed them,however there was no change in prefomence.i aslo downloaded some kinda patch thing for my motherboard as well but still no noticeable change in preformence

Bare in mind that the K6-II series of CPU's suffered a low FPU problem before the Athlons' came in to play. I remember when I had a PII-266 system and my friend had a K6-2 266. The gaming performance wasn't even comparable between my system and his. From what I remember the FPU in a K6-II was half the speed of the actual CPU. EG: 550 MHz CPU running like a 275. I also had the same grief with my K6-2 500 / V3 2000 combo. Moving to a CPU with a stronger FPU solved the issue.

I think the biggest upgrade to go for at the moment is a cheap PCI grafix card - the Geforce 4 MX for instance. Also, the K6-II 550MHz is basically an over-clocked chip already, and getting it to run stable was one thing even AMD had trouble with (hence the 2.3v core as opposed to 2.2v - a typical overclocking trait).

If you play older games, you can get dirt-cheap Voodoo cards that make great use of the K6-X familie's '3DNow!' SIMD instructions. 3DFX - who made the Voodoo card range - really went to town optimising it when paired with the K6-2 and Direct-X 6. I used to have a K6-2 450 (running at 550MHz) paired with a Voodoo 3 3000 and most of the older games ran fine, even one'e like Project IGI. 2D games and Mame emulation runs great, as do emulators for the N64, Spectrum, Megadrive etc. No sweat.

It was only the 16MB of video on the 3000 card and lack of a T&L engine that held it back with newer titles, as well as being limited to a 16-bit colour depth (not really that much of a problem). I think the Voodoo only supports Direct-X upto v7(?).

These days I use a K6-III+ 450@560 MHz and a Geforce 2 Ultra, having tried a Geforce 4 MX and Geforce 4 Ti. Even though you can ramp the resolution up and use FSAA with the faster cards, when the screen gets complex can see the frame rate slump before your eyes due to the CPU bottleneck.

No amount of over-clocking is going to give you adequate frame rates in modern 3D games: the graphics card is reliant on a Socket 7 CPU which can't supply the required geometry data quickly enough for the graphics card requesting it (the graphics card takes the geometry data and then renders it). Even a slow Duron will blow away your K6-2.

What games do I run with the GF2 Ultra? GTA Vice City @ 1280 x 1024 + FSAA; Need for Speed Underground @ 800 x 600 and Unreal Tournament @ 1024 x 768 + FSAA & AF.

I'm not slagging off these CPU's, as for general use like web browsing and cd-burning I run my setup 24/7 with rock-solid performance that's very nippy, but for games I think if you keep investing in your setup you're wasting money. However, as the other folks have said your onboard grafix is a huge bottleneck at the moment and there are also tools you can download like CTU.EXE that will enable registers inside your K6-2 that your motherboard may ignore.

The Voodoo 3 2000 is the card you want to go for. Failing that, go for a Geforce 4 MX 440 PCI version. The Geforce FX is expensive in PCI format.

To be totally honest with you, I don't think you'd be able to get a Duron running up and running with $25. You'd need the CPU and motherboard because you can't insert a Duron CPU into a Socket 7 motherboard, unfortunately. You can however get boards that accept the Duron/Athlon CPU's with onboard video, but you need to spend more to ensure that as well as onboard video (Geforce 4 MX 440), you get an AGP slot!

i have 512kb L2 cache so this helps right? this on board video card is 8mb max of shared video memory, i also think thie ram in my computer is also slow,not helping much as far as video games goes...

The cache is a type of memory that sits between your CPU (fast) and your main RAM (slow) - a kind of bridge that holds the most-recent instructions and data. Your CPU has some of this "cache" RAM inside (with the K6-2 it has 64K Level 1). So you can see that the cache on your board becomes level 2 cache.

L2 cache plugs the gap to a certain extent between the very fast CPU and the very slow RAM. But, this cache on most socket 7 setups runs at 100MHz, so you can see that when you have a processor running at say 500MHz your cache is useful but it still only runs at 100MHz. A bottleneck. The socket-compatible AMD K6-III CPU is a better chip, because it has its own 64K L1 'and' 256K L2 cache on the chip running at full speed - your board's cache becomes L3. However, the K6-III has all the other same parts as the K6-2, so performance is mainly reliant on that bit of extra cache. So yes, the motherboard's cache helps, but only up to a point and short of changing the CPU you can't improve on it.

As for that onboard video, you're right - it sucks. It bleeds your RAM dry and also creates other problems because of the fact that it's having to share resources when addressing this RAM. Older SIS chipsets are also known to have extremely poor 3D hardware acceloration..

With the main RAM in your computer, it will in the majority of socket 7 boards, only run as fast as the FSB speed of the CPU. If your board supports a K6-2@500, then your RAM will need to run at 100MHz or better; you can usually use PC133 SDRAM but you won't see any speed improvement along the lines of an extra 33MHz. Still worth seeing what you can get out of the BIOS however, as some boards can run the RAM in turbo mode.

Sometimes it's simply down to the board not being designed electrically for such a CPU to remain stable, even though it can in theory. Not having the latest BIOS to recognize it or the CPU itself can often be a apain as well. The K6-2 at 550MHz was AMD's fastest model of this family, and it runs very hot. Also, board manufacturers like PC Chips have actually put code in the BIOS that lies about the core and/or FSB speed, simply because they knew a certain board (M598) would not run properly at the required settings. So pair a fast CPU like this with a board from a company not renowned for telling the truth..

The best thing to do at the moment as long as its cheap, is upgrade your video subsystem. Even if you were able to run your CPU at 900 MHz, it would still not be able to outstrip a dedicated, hardware solution.

On any typical PC gaming rig, there are two types of calcualtions that need to be done in order to create a realistic 3D scene:

1) Your CPU does the geometry calculations
2) The grafix card does a small amount of geometry and all the rendering

Compare that to the old days where the CPU did the geometry and the rendering. Even with slower CPU's like the K6-2 that can't really get the most out of budget cards like the GF4 MX 440/FX 5200, as soon as you lessen the burden of that CPU having to do all the hard work, you instantly notice a major hike in speed and a much-better image than you can ever get in software. Today I was running GTA Vice City at 1600 x 1200 with 2 x FSAA - without the Geforce 2 Ultra under the bonnet pumping out those 25fps, I'd end up with a slideshow.

Grafix chipsets you may also be tempted to buy, but should avoid:

ALL nine versions of the PCChips M598 and M599 mobos used the same SiS530 chipset/video, and for playing games this just sucks the hind teat of a dead cow.
As Wildcard suggests above, get any 1/2 decent PCI vid card in there and you will see an AMAZING difference.

@ Wildcard... anything wrong with a Voodoo3 3000 for this board? Just curious as to why it's not on your 'recommended' list.

Yeah, there seems to be a premium on the 3000 at the moment; hopefully Charlie22911 can bag one at a good price. I know they come in PCI format, but they're rare however I have seen them a couple of times at my local computer fair, usually stuffed in a bucket with loads of other stuff you cut your fingers trying getting at..

A bit OT..The heatsink that comes with the Voodoo 3000 is quite good - I ripped one off, super-glued it to a busted GF4 MX 440 (AGP) card, and clocked it way over its default speed. The 440 had a blown fan although some came without them so I guess that's why it worked with just a passive cooler setup. It's quite large and the Voodoo is known to kick out a lot of heat, so it worked quite well - I'm sure with a glued fan you could get more. Thanks, 3DFX!

i have added 128Mb of pc 133 sdram to my computer to make a total of 160Mb of ram.noticeable improvement in speed.about the video card thing,i have found 3 possibiltys on e-bay, a 16 Mb 3dfx banshee,16 Mb 3dfx voodoo and a 32 Mb 3dfx Voodoo 4500.
what will give me better preformance for my setup?i also finaly got a e-mail back from amd today,they said i needed a patch from microsoft however i have searched every possobilty for finding the patch but no luck.
this will be the last bit of help needed. i aperciate you guys helping and hope you will help me here,like they say 2 or more heads are better than 1.
