I recently bought a Radeon 9600Pro vid card, and am having problems getting it installed. My old card is an Nvidia GeForce2 MX400 64mb AGP slot card, which is what came with my machine, which is a Compaq Presario 7110US, AMD Athlon 1.3GHz, 640mb ddram.

The installation process I conducted was this:

Uninstalled Nvidia drivers
Set display to Standard VGA Driver
Uninstalled Nvidia card
Installed Radeon card
(computer starts ok in Standard VGA mode)
Installed drivers from ATI CD
Reboot
(computer boots to a dead screen with no signal from CPU)

I downloaded and installed Chipset AGP drivers from AMD from this link:

Windows® ME AGP Miniport Driver - Microsoft Digitally-Signed, Version 4.80 (Windows® ME only)
http://www.amd.com/us-en/asset...t_ty...t_480_winme.exe' ">http://www.amd.com/us-en/asset...miniport_480_winme.exe.

If I take out the Radeon, put the Nvidia back in and reboot, Windows autodetects the "new" (Nvidia) card, sets the display back to Standard VGA (since Nvidia drivers are gone) and will boot in Standard VGA mode. If I then power down again, reinstall the Radeon and reboot, the computer will boot properly, loads the ATI drivers, and the card functions properly.

If I then power down and reboot with the Radeon still in, the computer boots to a dead screen again, with no signal from the cpu. Swapping back to the Nvidia and rebooting "resets" the display, and will allow me to reboot again with the Radeon, however if I power down again, the problem reoccurs.

Summary: If the computer was powered down with Radeon installed, the next boot (with Radeon installed) will fail. If it was powered down with the Nvidia installed, the next boot (with Radeon installed) will succeed.

I sent a problem report to ATI and received a mostly copy/pasted reply. One idea that they suggested which sounded interesting was that on reboot, the ATI card becomes the secondary display adapter (like its running a second monitor, which I don't have installed or configured in setup) and they suggested a workaound to disable the primary adapter and run my monitor on the secondary, however in order to set this up they say I have to connect my current monitor to my onboard display chip, which I don't have ... the Nvidia was an AGP slot card, so I have no idea how I could follow this suggestion.

The card is running right now since I've run the workaround I mentioned above (swapping out the Nvidia to get the machine to switch back to Standard VGA mode, which seems to enable the Radeon to load properly on next boot) but I can't power down without resetting the problem, and of course any sort of crash or installation which requires a reboot will cause the malfunction again.

Below is a copy of the problem report generated by ATI's query program. No idea if it contains anything that might be useful, but I'll paste it here just in case.

I'm not a big techie, so lay terms would be great! Any help would be truly appreciated. Thanks!

Further testing, and I found that the Radeon will not load with only the VGA drivers, either.

Is this just an ATI problem? I can still return this card to NewEgg and go with an Nvidia if so.

exsyle,

You got a weird one there!

I suspect that the problem lies with 'left-over' Nvidea drivers. This is fairly common, as the nVidea drivers are 'persistent' and difficult to remove.

Do a 'Google' for 'Detonator Destroyer' and see if that can rid you you of the Detonator drivers, which are probably what is causing your problem.

I also found a program called "Driver Cleaner 3.0" that does a similar thing - removes all the junk left behind from 3DFX, Nvidia and ATI.

If you need it or Detonator Destroyer, let me know by PM and I can point you in the right direction

Oh come on the ATI card smokes this thing....Besides how will dishing out more bones get the other card to work?

It won't.

He already dished out some big bones for a new ATi, lets see if we can get it running...

^lol^...

i am a rookie at these things so I'm gonna suggest something totally crazy: could it be the psu and/or heating issues and mabye a hardware incompatibility, or mabye its the way "comcrap" made it, I'm sure they would much rather buy a new system from them rather then upgrade it...
