I reformated the hard drive and reinstalled win 98. Now the system locks up constantly. Have reformated and reinstalled 3 times, nothing changes. I was told that there was a download of that corrected a problem with k6-2 and win 98, but i could not find anything on amd website.

The issue you are referring to is a problem with Win95 and AMD K6-2 processors clocked at 350MHz or higher - these CPUs are actually executing a certain loop-instruction too fast To my knowledge, the aforementioned issue does not exist in Win98, tho.
Did your system run absolutely stable before you reformatted? Did you do anything else besides reformatting?(like reset CMOS, install new/different components, etc.)
What exactly do you mean by 'the system locks up'? does it just freeze, do you get bluescreens/error messages, does it reboot by itself, any beeps? Does it lockup when running a certain application or type of application(e.g. games)? Did you reinstall all drivers(chipset, video, etc)?
