I have an AMD Athlon 1300 on a MSI K7T Turbo motherboard...
All worked well until recently... I installed SP2 and several days after that Win XP started to hang while starting up (during the splash screen) from time to time... SP2 caused some other troubles so I removed it but the hangs continued... Windows boots at safe mode, and at system recovery mode... I installed the newest BIOS because I read somewhere this could interfere with SP2 but it didn't help... In BIOS the CPU temperature is over 50 C... So could the problem be overheating or is it just software?

man i agree that SP2 is annoyin. it givs a new face to som things that u now cant recognize and the security center interferes with EVERYTHING!!!
if i remember correctly...it told u to make a system restore point before intstalling the Service Pack. did u do that?

yes that temp is high, clean the dust off of your heatsink (big aluminuim or copper thing with 'fins' on it) to see if that helps. i have heard of many problems with Sp2, i dont use xp, i dual boot between win98 (for games) and win2000 (for work), winXP is to much of a memory hog for me to run, besides i like 2000 and 98 better anyway.

I already solved the XP problem which turned out to be software... some old antivirus had left traces in the registry which interfered with my new one... I did some cleanup in the registry and everything went fine...
As to the CPU temperature... just before sending this post I cleaned up the CPU fan and the heatsink, which were pretty dusty... However, that brought the teperature down only by 2-3 degrees... The fan works at about 6000 rpm - is that normal? Or do I need a new one?
As to the XP vs 98... Well I use XP for 3-4 months... Before that I was on 98... It's true that XP is memory consuming and has some useless graphics (though most of them can be disabled) but it manages some resources and hardware better... For example my CD burner SONY 52/24/52 with newest drivers used to burn a 700 mb cd for 5-6 minutes under 98... Under XP it does it for 3 minutes...
BTW, I installed SP2 again (how brave of me, don't you think? ) And this time everything's right!
