My main computer is now a Mac. I still have an old Cybermax PC running
Win98 SE that has many arcade games my kids enjoy. The motherboard is
an FIC VIA 503+. The processor was an AMD K-6 500, but as the computer
crashed multiple times (apparently a problem for the 503+ - Win98SE -
AMD 500 combo), I tried reinstalling Win98 SE numerous times with clean installs, but installation would never finish, due to Windows configuration errors, system errors, and system , etc.

I then put in my old original AMD K6-166, adjusted the jumpers to 2.5 X 66, and the computer is working fine.

I want to put the 500 back in. I've read of a problem with AMD K6 processors 350mhz and higher causing system errors on Win95b, but I've also read it's not supposed to be a problem with Win98 SE.

Does anyone have any ideas? I assume that as the computer works fine with the 166 in, that the problem is not RAM (256 MB SDRAM) or hardware-related.

Any suggestions are appreciated. Thanks

It could still be the RAM because your RAM runs synch(=at the same speed) with your FSB - so if you're running a 66MHz FSB, your RAM will run at 66MHz, too.
Did this comp ever run stable with the K6-2 500MHz? did it come with that CPU or have you upgraded the CPU?

And what errors did you get upon installing Win98? was it always the same error(s)?
