QUOTE (xxmothxx @ Mar 30 2005, 02:37 AM) I'm trying set up a cheap machine for a friend. Everything works fine except we can't get directx 9 games to display the graphics properly. When we run dxdiag with get a garbled image on the direct3d 7 interfaces and direct3d 9 interfaces test. the direct3d 8 interfaces test displays correctly.

I just wanted to confirm that the older Athlon Thunderbird 1.4Ghz cpu works with dx9? We have a new Asus A7V880 motherboard which uses the Via KT880 chipset. We also have a new ATI Radeon 9550 video card. Latest drivers and bios for all parts.

So, can anyone confirm that they have dx9 working with a thunderbird chip?
I have DirectX 9.0c with a 900MHZ Thunderbird
and it works. The motherboard is an old Shuttle
with the KT133 (not KT133A) chipset. I've had
to do a few tricks to get later games to work
right. It's my belief that there's about a 5 year
window around the time the processor and the
other main parts of a system were made where
the gaming can be optimized. For example, when
the main parts were new (latest and greatest) in
2000, I feel that you can use games that were
new between 1998 and 2002 with close to optimal
results. You can push the high side up a year
by using the best video card that the rest of the
main parts can handle. After that you can't
expect the best gaming experiences from the
latest games--and beyond that you can expect
some games to not work even at a barely
acceptable level. In any case, the tricks that
worked for me were to pull back to AGP2X and
lower the sound acceleration to basic within
Direct X. Either of those, when set too high,
will show up as video problems. Other items
include not going nuts with the AGP aperture
setting and making sure DMA is enabled and
correct for any involved hardware. In general,
using older hardware with newer games requires
some system (bios and operating system)
optimization skills. Hot video cards help a lot,
but they don't fix (read: magically optimize
and create compatability) everything.

I hope this helps. Good luck.

I had a similar problem with my Radeon 9250 Game FX, try uninstalling all of the drivers and then reinstalling them. AS long as you run off the regular supplied drivers, it should work fine.(this happened to me when playing Counter Strike:Source). Try not to screw with the video settings too much.

alcioneijr,

Our video cards are almost similar and I notice you are using the latest nvidia drivers but I have found that the best drivers for these geforce2 cards are the detonators 4x.xx. I am currently using 44.03' ">http://www.nvidia.com/object/winxp-2k_44.03.html, which I have found to be the best and most reliable for my card. For me, anything newer like the 5x.xx or 6x.xx series will cause stutters in some games or graphics corruption, even though nvidia says they are compatible with these older legacy cards. You may want to try the 44.03 and see if that works for you, as the latest and newest drivers are not necessarily the best for these older cards. Btw, there are newer drivers available for your SiS chipset(v1.21) and your sound card.

Xaev,

I do not see any major problems in your report. Also noticed you are using the latest drivers for a legacy card. Have you tried older drivers(cat 3.x/4.x) and with fast writes in bios and smartgart enabled/disabled? From what I have read on the net about these issues, most of the time they are caused by a combination of chipset/video hardware/video driver problems. I hope you can eventually get this thing sorted out.

Just to check this out I loaded DirectX 9.0c onto an older machine and played through the Halo Combat Evolved Demo.

Rig used.
Athlon Thunderbird 1200mhz unlocked to 1300Mhz.
Epox 8KTA2 (KT133 100Mhz FSB)
PC133 SDRAM
Nvidia GeForce 3 Ti500 64Mb Graphics.

OS etc.
Win XP SP1 (and a bit)
DirectX 9.0c
Older Nvidia drivers (43.51) and Via Chipset drivers for stability.

Apart from a few problems installing DX9.0 and DX9.0b which did not install at all. (Apparently there may be a problem with these installers as there are others who have had the same problem installing them.) The DX9.0c installed OK and the game playes through alright as well.
In terms of hardware this is less well specified machine than the one you are trying to set up, therefore I think that the hardware itself should be just about capable. (just) Take a look at the Graphics and Chipset drivers.

I give up. Ordered a Sempron 2400+, new motherboard, and 256 mb pc3200 ram last Friday. I know, I know, don't yell at me, "oMg ram iz 2 LO!1" I intend on ordering at least 512 more when I get the cash. Do you think a 230 watt power supply can handle it, or am I gonna hafta move up to 300+?
