Hello, I am out of my depth trying to install RAID/AHCI drivers to enable me to run my son's laptop in SATA mode using XP Professional on an Acer Aspire 5536G. I believe the chipset is SB700?? The reason for this is is that my son uses Adobe CS3 extensively, and we have had constant problems trying to run it under VISTA32.

I have tried slipstreaming the driver into a Windows XP boot disk, using nLite, without success. I have had to set the BIOS to IDE mode, as a result. Can anyone help me to create a windows registry entry (based on the text setup file) and advise which files to include in C:\windows\system32 directory?? The AMD SATA AHCI Controller Driver Diskette contains the following files:

Getting RAID/AHCI drivers into XP Pro on a laptop could be tough. XP Pro just will not do an install that includes the RAID/AHCI drivers. What worked for me, putting RAID on a full-size tower, was having 3 disc drives of which 2 were bootable. I'm going to write this for a RAID installation, but if you are just after the AHCI, you can ignore all references to RAID and to the 3rd drive.

The overall approach is to boot from a disk in IDE mode while having other disk(s) on the system in RAID/AHCI mode. Windows detects "New Hardware" and asks for drivers. You supply a disk with drivers and tell Windows to load them. This yields an installation with the RAID/AHCI drivers installed. You then move this disk to the RAID/AHCI connection and tell the BIOS to boot from it. Mission accomplished.

The usual caveats apply; It worked for me but your mileage may vary. This approach may involve editing the registry so be sure to back it up if you are trying to keep pgms/data intact. If it's a clean install, don't worry about it, just re-install. See the Notes: section at the end for a few more details and quirks.

1) Lets call the drives 'C', 'D', and 'E', with 'C' and 'D' bootable to XP Pro in IDE mode. I recommend you actually label the drives with sticky labels or masking tape. Also name them within Windows by right-clicking the drive name and selecting 'Rename'.

2) Connect 'D' & 'E' as RAID (or AHCI if you are not using RAID) and 'C' as IDE (or IDE Function.) Set the BIOS accordingly.

2a) If using RAID, Set RAID BIOS to RAID-1 on drives 'D' & 'E'.

3) Set the BIOS Boot Order to boot from the drive labeled 'C'.

4) Boot into Windows SAFE MODE (Safe Mode may be optional, but I know it works that way.)

5) When XP comes up, it will eventually report "Found New Hardware", the New Hardware being the RAID/AHCI. Choose "Have Disk" and point it to the appropriate directory (x86 or x64) on the Driver Disk you made earlier.

6) When the driver installation completes, normal Windows mode and you should be able to access two drives.

7) Shut down the machine and swap the connections to the 'C' and 'D' drives. This moves the 'C' drive to its final destination.

8) Re-boot into the BIOS and change the Boot Order to the RAID array (or the AHCI port).

9) Re-boot into normal Windows.

At this point, Windows is likely rather confused. It boots from the drive we labeled 'C' but then switched to drive 'D' as the System drive. Since the normal Windows utilities won't allow changing the drive letter of the System drive, we must make the change manually.

10) Select Start-> Programs-> Administrative Tools-> Computer Management.

11) In the Computer Management left pane, select Storage-> Disk Management. The right pane should list the drive names and letter assignments, and show a graphical representation of the drives.

12) In the graphical view, find the drive that says "Healthy (System)" and make note of the drive letter. Also note the letter assigned to the boot drive (the one you named 'C' in step 1, above).

If you find that the drive you booted from is labeled/named 'C', is assigned drive letter C: and is shown as "Healthy (System)", well, you lucked out. You're done!

13) Close the Computer Management window.

Now we swap the drive letter assignments in the Registry.

14) Select Start-> Run and type 'regedit" in the window (without the quotes).

15) In the Registery Editor left pane click on '+' (plus) next to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE then the '+' (plus) next to SYSTEM.

16) Still in the left pane, click on 'MountedDevices'. Watch the spelling, some installations have similiar entries.

17) Scroll down the right pane looking for '\DosDevices\C:'

Here we do the actual drive letter swapping by renaming the entries. Windows won't allow duplicate names here so we have to rename to a temporary name, change a drive letter, then rename the temporary.

18) Find the \DosDevices\ entry corresponding to the FIRST letter you noted in step 13 above. Right-click the entry, select 'Rename', remove the last character (a colon ':'), and press 'Enter'.

19) Find the entry corresponding to the SECOND letter from step 13, right-click, select 'Rename', change the letter before the colon to the FIRST letter from step 13.

20) Select the entry from step 19 again, right-click, 'Rename', change the last letter to the SECOND letter from step 13, add the colon that was removed earlier, and press 'Enter".

21) Press the 'F5' key on the keyboard and close the Registry Editor window.

22) Reboot into Windows.

23) Repeat steps 11 and 12, above.

24) In the Computer Management right pane, you should find that the drive you labeled named 'C' in step 1 is assigned drive letter C: and is shown as "Healthy (System)".

25) If you want to change other drive letter assignments, this is the place to do so. Right-click on a drive and select 'Change Drive Letters and Paths...'

Notes:
The above was done on a Gigabyte GA-MA790FXT-UD5P MoBo, rev 1 with BIOS version F6, and Gigabyte 7-series Utility DVD Ver. 2.01. When I tried this a few years ago on a different MoBo, Gigabyte told me it wasn't possible to do an "upgrade install" of RAID without wiping out all the pgms & data on the system. That attempt took about a week and ALOT more work to accomplish. This approach was arrived at after 3.5 rather long days of trying variations on the "documented and approved" approaches.

It appears that the AMD SB750, when configured for RAID on ports 0-3 and IDE on ports 4-5, always treats any drives on ports 0-3 that are not assigned to a RAID array as the boot drive. This is regardless of the boot sequence you define in the BIOS. Or it could be a quirk of the particular MoBo or BIOS I'm using. Some feedback from AMD on this would be nice.
