Topic Title: SB700 RAID 1, move from one computer to another Topic Summary: How do I break an array and move one drive over to another machine? Created On: 09/25/2009 01:35 PM Status:

I have two Gigabyte MA785GPMT-UD2H motherboards with the SB700 Southbridge. I have set up on with RAID 1 and installed Windows XP64 on it plus a bunch of software. Now I want to break the mirror, and move one drive over to the other machine and set that up with RAID 1 too. I have broken the mirror and rebuilt the first machine mirror and that went fine. Now I want to make sure that when I move the drive to the new machine it picks it up fine.
...
Spoke too soon. The RAID 1 rebuild finished fine but then I rebooted and it went critical again. Looking in the event log, it looks like Windows wrote a new signature on the drive which broke the mirror.
Going into the RAID ROM after bootup if I look at the Drive Assignments, one disk is set to LD 2-2 and the other disk is "Single Disk". Why wouldn't they both be part of the LD?
So, what is the proper way to do this? That is, add a drive back into the array? Documentation is very lacking. Or is there a good resource for this information somewhere that I just haven't found?
As for going to the new machine, I think I just need to set it up as RAID 1 and tell it to not initialize the drives. Is that all there is to it?
Also, later on down the road, if the motherboards crash or something, will it be possible to just use these drives as JBOD drives and be able to boot from them as single drives, or at least be able to get the data off of them as a single, non-RAID drive?
