As a student at a college that participates in Microsoft's Dreamspark program, I qualify for a free license of Windows Server 2008. Given that Microsofts server OSes serve quite easily as the basis of robust workstation environment, I was just wondering how well supported the 785G is under Winn2k8. Will I get 3D acceleration (I've noted some people having problems with Catalyst 10.x under it) Will all the SATA stuff work OK? What about sound? I know this isn't an officially supported config, but should it at least work?

Yes 785 G and WS2008 work well together. You wont have any problems.

Yes DX 10 is included or DX 11 for R2 , yes you will have 3d acc.

Server 2008 is based on vista code where as windows server 2008 R2 is based on win 7 code.

So make sure you get the R2 and all will be well.

So I just install the Windows 7 64-bit drivers and I should be good to go? DX10 isn't that crucial to me, but reliable storage controller, DX9 and OpenGL performance all are. As long as I can serve my files, play Quake 3 and write my papers, I'll be happy.
