I installed catalyst 12.1 chipsetdriver for my old Asus M3A78 board (SB7xx chipset), and got a bsod upon booting again.

I ended up changing to IDE mode to be able to boot at all.. uninstalled the AMD drivers completely and enabled MS ahci driver, but now i still bsod whenever i use AHCI mode in the bios.

I have also tried to install an older (11.11) ahci driver, but to no avail. As soon as i enable AHCI mode in bios, the computer only boots with a bsod.

This has been disgussed in a few other places, and seems to be a problem with SB7xx chipsets and the new 12.1 ahci driver, but my main problem is that im in no way able to start the computer with AHCI mode AT ALL. I did not have a old systemrestore, so could not roll back to a previous driver.

Any solution to get back any kind of ahci function? I would think the MSAHCI driver would work, but even tho i disable the AMD_SATA and AMD_XATA services from the registry, and enabling the MSAHCI service, i still get a bsod..

AHCI driver 1.2.1.327 and 1.2.1.321 resulted in blue screen for me (Stop 0x0000007b), 1.2.1.301 did work so checked the inf files and there is only a change in power-management. Changed the value for

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\services\amd_sata\Parameters\Device\AmdSataPMDisabled"=dword:000000ff

from 0 to 0xff and I could boot again

Just wanna say it works!

Been waiting for months hoping AMD would fix that, guess the experts are actually within the crowd instead

I am on a chipset 770 board by the way

Thanks for the solution lfb, should make this sticky!

Oo.. And NOW i finally see what a wonderful solution lfb has provided! Thank you

Reason i never saw this before, was cos i ended up managing to gain back the MSAHCI drivers, and eventually settled for that.

Then i saw the 12.4 package recently posted, and decided id give it a go.. ofc same thing happened, but this time i made a fresh systemrestore, so no real problem. Searching for any "news" brought me back here.. and WHAM.. problem solved

Now.. How come AMD has not fixed this in 3 revisions of their catalyst software? 12.1 through 12.4, and the problem is still the same? Well.. thankfully there are ppl with the knowhow, so all is not lost

Thx again lfb

Thank you for this solution! I installed Catalyst v12.4 and got a BSoD, luckily I could get back into Windows7 by changing AHCI mode in BIOS to 'native IDE' I have also contacted AMD support in the hope they might fix this error.

I found the instruction to enter 0xff slightly confusing, so to clarify for others just enter ff for the DWORD and have 'hexadecimal' radio button selected.

for the record, my motherboard is a Gigabyte GA-MA78GM-S2H

For Catalyst 12.8 (12-8_vista_win7_win8_32-64_sb.exe) it's still the same. Not able to fix this in more than half a year?!
