Well I have seen it done for blocks, and a couple miles, but the equipment is massive for those wireless B/G standards.
Now there are other forms of wireless. IE wireless interent which is in eyesight of a tower basically, which can be 10 miles about. These are radio signals i should say, requiring you to have a dish.
Finally you have the wimax standard which will be appearing, that might have your answer.
