I'm connecting a laptop and a desktop, both running Windows XP Pro. I simply want to be able to do things like transfer files from one to the other. By going through other forums and downloading MS tools, I'm now able to open both computers. Before, it would say something like "Logon failure. You don't have permission..." Now when I go to View workgroup computers, I can see both computers and open them up. But I still can't transfer files. Can anybody walk me through the steps?

If you can open a window from each PC on your screen, you should be able to just "drag and drop" your files from one to the other.

What happens when you try to do this?

You'd still need to have them both on the same workgroup and enable filesharing.I'd suggest just sharing one folder and not the whole drive unless you're on a closed network not connected to the net.

Lets say the files you want to share are on the D: drive. In my computer right click on D: select sharing You can then select D. All the files on D will be able to be shared by the other computer.

If you only have one drive C: I would do like TLH said and select a folder within the C: drive to be shared instead of sharing the whole drive. You have to do this on both computers if you want to share back and forth.

To be really safe if you use both computers on the internet. Is to only do this when you are disconnected from the internet. Then change it back to no file sharing of any drives before connecting back up to the internet.
