I have ran my amd fx 8120 at 4.4 Ghz for a hour before
I did some math and multiplied the settings from auto/default to get voltage.
I saw today someones settings for voltage where much lower for 4.2 (200 x 21 ) the volts where 1.7.
i want to know is there a formula for finding the correct voltage or ball park?

Not really, since no two pieces of hardware are created equal, some can run at the same freq as another but at a lower voltage and do it stably. Your best bet is to try running your CPU at a lower voltage and test for stability with a stress testing program such as Prime95.

That's the fun part, just keep an eye on your temps and mind your voltage threshold as well.
