Hello,

My system is feeling painfully slow. When I built it last year, I got what I considered an affordable high-end setup. I've never been very happy with the performance.

My current specs:
AMD 9950 2.6GHz BE 125w
ASUS M3A79-T
750W power supply
ATI Sapphire Radeon HD 4870 1GB
8GB DDR2 RAM 1066
2 Seagate 7200rpm internal drives (1TB and 1.5TB)
Windows 7 64-bit RC (previously used Vista Ultimate 64)
LIAN LI PC-60BPLUSII Black Aluminum ATX Mid Tower Computer Case

This is the first computer I ever built, so maybe I missed a step somewhere? I updated the motherboard when I first built it. ATI drivers are up to date.

RAM has never run at 1066. System is always LOUD (fans, especially when editing video. This makes it very hard to work). There is also a faint high pitched sound for the first few minutes on boot, which I have never been able to track down.

Any advice? I want to run this system optimally. My 6 year old Pentium 4 computer boots faster and runs smoother. Obviously, something is wrong.

Thanks!

At this point, I increase Voltage to 1.5V, and do ONE of the following:
1) Increase HT Ref Clock to 215Mhz
2) Increase HT Multiplier to x20

Either ways, within 5min of running a stability test, computer restarts. Temperature at time of restart is around 48 deg. cel.

Why is this happening? Phenom II x4 965 is supposed to have a threshold temp of about 62 deg cel. I am nowhere close.

UPDATE:

After making this post, I re-ran a stress test at Overclock Attempt #1 settings, and it ran successfully for 15min at 46 deg. cel.
After the test was completed, I waited for temperatures to come down again. In AMD Overdrive I increased multiplier to x20, increased voltage to 1.5V and hit apply. The changes were made as reflected by CPUZ. At this point, temperature had come down to 38 degrees, each core was at 10% load or less and I hadn't started the stability test yet, when the PC crashed and restarted.
NOw, why in God's name would that happen? There was no load, temperature was 38 deg.!

i got the AMD Athlon X2 5800+, but icant find any specs on it, like what memory it supports.
got in touch with my MB man. they said.
The memory controller for AMD is inside of the CPU. The memory controller for the Athlon 64 CPUs is only rated for 800MHz. A lot of them will do higher but some won`t. If the memory will not do 800MHz than it shouldn`t have anything to do with the board. The board is just telling the controller inside the CPU what to do and 428 is already above what AMD officially rates it for. Go to http://www.amd.com/us/products...eature-comparison.aspx and scroll down to Integrated DDR Memory Controller. You can see that the only Athlon X2s rated for over 800 are the 7000 series.

Cant find any info to supposed what he said

I am only thinking about this at this time since there is really no ddr3 sli mb's out except for only 1 980a Msi sli mb that I would consider at this time. I remember Guru having a problem with the 750a, so I will not even consider that one. Has anyone ever used MSI mb's and what would your opinion be of them? My last 3 mb's have been Asus so thats all I really know recently. I have seen on Msi website it shows 1.5 volt for the ram. If thats the case it will really limit me on any choices of ram I could use. I do like the pcie x16 x16 for the video cards I have. I am in really no hurry and just may wait for a Asus mb. But the Msi one does have some things I like except maybe for the ram voltage, but it does look nice also. Plus I would like to get the 965 cpu. I may just get that til a Asus mb comes out. Will that 1.5 volt be a problem on the ram?

http://www.newegg.com/Product/...?Item=N82E16813130236

http://www.msi.com/index.php?f...ncat_no=1&prod_no=1885

Hi,

I try to upgrade my PC every 2-3 years with good 'bang for buck' components. In other words I'm not bothered with getting the absolute latest & greatest, just descent components at a decent price.

To that end I've identified the Phenom II 955 as an exceptionally good value CPU. I would appreciate recommendations on good value compatible motherboards and RAM. My vague requirements are as follows:

Overclocking - Do not plan to overclock

Integrated Graphics - Not required (will use a separate graphics card)

SLI / crossfire - Not required (only plan to use one graphics card)

Integrated audio - I would prefer integrated audio (no plans to buy a separate sound card)

CPU power connector - My current PSU has a 4 pin connector. I would prefer not to buy a new PSU if possible so 4 pin mobos would be preferable.

AM2+ / AM3 - OK, as I understand things AM3 is required for DDR3 RAM. Some things I've read suggest that DDR3 isn't really worth it. Is that true? Also, is it just me or have RAM prices gone up alot since the last time I looked (2-3 years ago)?

Any advice would be really appreciated!
