Hi,
I've MSI K9A2GM V3 (AM2+) motherboard and I upgraded my processor in hope of gaining improved performance in 3D gaming.

Yet when I compare system performance with this new CPU to my previous one, I find no improvement whatsoever.

For example, in Need For Speed Shift, I've got 18FPS with everything maxed out when I am in a column of cars -- just same with X2 7850 like with X4 925.

In Modern Warfare 2 in Estate map, I've barely 24 FPS with X4 925 (everything maxed out; I even don't remember with X2 7850 going it that low).

I simply changed BOX version of X2 7850 with BOX version of X4 925. My Windows XP started normally, so I didn't reinstall operating system.

Could be problem in my chip set (motherboard)? MSI says that K9A2GM V3 supports socket AM3 processors only up to 65 TDP (yet on www.cpu-upgrade.com, I've found it in the list of supported processors). But when on boot motherboard identifies CPU correctly and in Windows XP I see all the cores running at 2.8 GHz with 1.325 V (AMD Power Monitor; Cool and Quiet disabled in BIOS), could there be a problem?

What can "bottleneck" my system? Given that I've Radeon HD 4890 (Sapphire Vapor-X) and 4 GB RAM (Patriot), could old chip set "bottleneck" the system? Or should I reinstall my Windows XP SP3?

Could somebody give me comparison of performance? Has anyone with quad core processor 18 FPS in NFS Shift and barely 24 FPS in some maps of Modern Warfare 2?

Thanks for the input,

Martin

Tested my Seagate Extreme last night with the seagate software test and it came back as a bad device and says "This external drive requires service". Tells me to apply for an RMA. I'm getting long transfer times with it.

I also tested my Corsair Dominator @ 1066 just before I went to Win 7 and it was throwing a few errors in Memtest and one of the cooling fans in the airflow has given me problems also, squeeked badly for a couple of weeks and is now stiff compared to the other 2 fans on it. Will rma it but need new stuff first. Running ok @ 800.

So recommendations for either a good 1Tb external or internal drive please. It's a storage drive and I don't use the portable nature of an external enough for it to be a necessity to go for an external really, just needs to be solid and reliable.

Also is there any problem with Geil Black Dragon ram as it's the only stuff I've found at a decent price right now. When I bought my Dominator it was £69 for 4gb, right now it's running at around £125. Taking the Geil means dropping to pc6400 but I'd be going to 8gb rather than 4gb @ pc8500 and it would fit under the fan on my core contact freezer.

Your thoughts please. Cheers.

About the only thing that seems to vary much is the efficiency. At normal load movie watching/gaming etc The power supplies tend to be 75-85% efficient. In-Win's website shows they have two 300Watt PS's one 80% rated the other not, the specs the same. My guess is that they simply test them out the door and anything better than 80 gets the higher sticker price and 80 logo.

The board is a no brainer. Gigabyte is second to none in my book. I know many here will poopoo uATX at all, but it's a good compromise for those who want a powerful machine without feeling like they have a full server in their room.

The Phenom II 550 runs a 80watt TDP, 3.1Ghz and overclocks like crazy. Quad Core Athlon 602 is about the same price but is only 2.6Ghz and suffers at gaming.

For memory, I choose G-Skill, this model in particular because it's rated at 1.5volts and runs far cooler than other OCZ and corsair that I've tried early on.

The hard drive is again a no brainer. You want the latest 500GB/Platter technology for sure. Faster speeds, better EE. Samsung does it right. Seagate is my second choice. Avoid WD in my view. With even just a single drive. I can peg my 1000Base-T network at home (yes 110MB/sec) sustained for 160GB worth of video between computers.

The ATI 4770 is the mid range card based on the new more EE process. It's sort of the new age 4830 in terms of low cost good performance but consuming a full 15 watts less idle and 30 watts less on full load.

The case I choose is really about the size and features. Just barely enough room to get some PCI-E cards in there. The cooling design on the case is impressive and it's small size is used to it's advantage. The Video card for example acts as a wall between video card heat and the rest of the system. It's also got a isolated CPU compartment to intake cool heat and isolate it around the CPU. It's also got tool less design, smooth edges etc. Very easy to work with. The power supply is also down by the PCI-E slots.

I wrote this quick so excuse the errors. I can't sleep tonight and needed something to do. Frankly I can't find a better system to build or recommend for people.

It runs well under 100watt idle and 170 or so at load without overclocking using my kill-a-watt. It also stays crazy cold.

If you want Quad Core without uping your power supply use the 905e (2.5Ghz) or this guy:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/...?Item=N82E16819103656

while the board supports 125 and 140 and this config has worked in a test, I wouldn't recommend pushing the PS that hard.

I have an Asus M2NPV-VM with a 350W Power Supply. The Asus website says it's compatible, but what manufacturers' claims and actual product have this annoying tendency of having slight differences. So yeah, wondering if my motherboard can support a processor that needs 125W supply. (I'd go for the 89W version, but I can't find it).

Hi everyone,
I am new to the forums so hello to everyone who happens to take a glance at my thread. I have been using AMD since I built my first computer and I have loved it! My current system is out-of-date though and I plan on upgrading. Let me know what you guys think, everyone's input is greatly appreciated. If you notice any problems let me know and kindly a suggest a solution please. I am looking for a good cooling system for this set-up. Here it is!

1. ASUS Crosshair III Formula AM3 AMD 790FX ATX AMD Motherboard
(after doing my homework I know I have to update the BIOS to get the CPU to work with this board.)
2. AMD Phenom II X4 965 Black Edition Deneb 3.4GHz Socket AM3 140W Quad-Core Processor Model
3. Kingston HyperX 4GB (4 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1800 (PC3 14400) Desktop Memory
4. HIS H489FN1GH Radeon HD 4890 1GB 256-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready CrossFire Supported Video Card
5. HT | OMEGA STRIKER 7.1 Channels PCI Interface Sound Card

Those parts are my upgrade parts. I currently have a Corsair 650W PSU and LG DVD/CD 22x drives I plan on keeping as well. My HDD is a 300GB WD that has lasted me very well through a few formats. I know I need to get a new HDD soon as this one is about 6 yrs old but that's not my main concern.

With this system I would like to run heavy graphics games as well and run a virtual PC ( not necessarily at the same time), my current CPU doesn't support virtualization. I plan on OCing to 3.7-4 GHZ as well, God willing. Thanks again for all your info!

-Artie Rivera

I came here for some help building my first PC. I've used a few other forums and despite saying I AM going AMD all anyone says is "Why not i5?", "Here's a good i7 build...$1000 over your budget", etc. So first and foremost my technical knowledge is limited in building a pc but I have tried to get all my selected components to match up as good as possible. If anyone can give suggestions that are similiar in performance and/or price to this parts list:
http://secure.newegg.com/WishL...shListNumber=12334612
I would appreciate it.
The purpose of this system is to be able to play new games, but also as a media center and school computer (all around I guess)

Thanks in advance guys

Greetings all,

I have two fairly old computers, of which I cannot remember the specs exactly
1. Family Computer
CPU: Athlon 3800+
Motherboard: Elitegroup K8T something (has both AGP and PCI-E slots)
RAM: 2gb DDR 400 speed
GPU: 7600GT (currently)
PSU: RAIDMAX 730 watt modular

2. Game Computer
CPU: Athlon 4400+
Motherboard: nForce 570 Ultra
RAM: 2gb corsair 800 speed
GPU: Radeon 4650 (currently)
PSU: RAIDMAX 530 watt modular

My issue is that the videocards I put into these machines seemly break and suffer (what I think is) major heating/cooling problems.

The computers have the same issues and they are:
1. The videocards start to pixilate and crash whenever doing something graphical such as games or even HD videos - then a VPU recovery prompt occurs.
2. Using the CCC to put the cards at their lowest core and memory speed as well as pushing the fan to max speed does seem to let the cards function, at least for a little bit while playing games.
3. ATItool seemly suggests that my 4850 (the only card I tested it on) says the core speed is at negative 2 million.

My 4870 from my main computer worked fine in these machines to the best that I could see of, but no videocards from these two broken computers worked in my main computer (at least not for long). So far the cards that i have tested and seemly lost are a 4850, 4650, 7600GT, and 1900XT.

What could possibly be the issue? It seemly spread from the Family Computer to the Game Computer, the only real commonality between the two is that they used the same videocards. Formatting and intense virus scanning (with avast) did nothing to absolve the issue.

XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX

Anyway, I'm considering getting some replacement parts on black friday for the machines, but I'm not sure what would have great price/performance and would last a long time.

I'm personally hoping to spend less than $300-400 on each machine. I'm thinking of getting an Athlon x2 or x3 CPU, 785G motherboard, DDR3 ram and 4770s.

Hi!

So im building a new computer from scratch.
As the title already tells you, I have no freaking idea which PSU, RAM and CPU cooler to choose.

By the way I don't want to do CFX or OC. The CPU cooler shouldn't be too big as I'd like to upgrade my memory with another 2x2GB memory some day and there has to be enough space for four memory sticks.

I already own:

- 250GB Samsung HD, 7200rpm, 2504c
- DVDCD/RW drive

Here's a list of my current set-up I'm planning to buy:

- CPU: Phenom II 965 (140TDP, maybe 125TDP if it's available in my town)
- GPU: HIS HD 5850
- Mainboard: Gigabyte MA790XT-UD4P

- RAM: No idea yet. Should cost around $120 and be 2 x 2GB, atleast 1333MHZ and of course be compatible with my set-up
- PSU: No idea yet. Should cost around $100
- CPU Cooler: No idea yet, too. Should cost between $30-50

On a side note: I did a power supply calculation here on http://www.be-quiet.net/calculator.php and it told me that I need a 500W PSU. Then later on I did another power supply calculation on a another site and it told me that I need a 600W PSU.

Thanks in advance for your help!

I received a Phenom 9850 X4 processor for free and thought I would build a system around it. I've read that this processor runs hot, but I'm hoping to put it into a Thermaltake Lanbox. The cpu has been out for a while so I was hoping to find some expert opinions on some recommendations for a matx that would serve my purpose. Basically, I will use the system for some light gaming, for ex. Civilization type games, and also it will be used to process home movies to put on dvd's. I will be putting a graphics card in it, unless the onboard graphics are suitable, but most time they're not. I've looked around on newegg for boards, but there are a ton and I'm not sure what to look for. I have built a few systems with the 7750 Kuma on some ASROCK boards, but mostly I'm an Intel guy just trying something different. I usually overclock, but wasn't planning this time since I would like to use the power savings feature to run the system for longer periods of time. Any help will be appreciated, and thanks in advance.

Hi,

I'm building a new system around a Phenom II X4 965 Black Edition, ASUS M4A78T-E mobo, with a GeForce GTX 260 card. I decided to start out with 8 GB RAM (Kingston or Corsair DDR3 1600). Haven't picked out HDD and DVD-RW yet, not too particular about those at the moment. I play WoW, so this system will be mainly for doing that, plus occasionally a little light development (I'm a java UI programmer).

My question is regarding the case and PSU. I was looking at mid-towers, and a 650W power supply. Would that be sufficient for what the system I'm planning? I know nothing about PSUs, so any recommendations in the mid-price range would be awesome. I'm not a flash guy, so I don't care about looks - I'm looking for a spacious, case, easy of installation and performance-per-dollar.

Thanks in advance,

Javagrendel

PS - I don't have any major plans to OC, though I read that the Asus board will allow me to overclock without changing any voltages. I may choose to try it, but not in the short run. Should I get some additional cooling fans etc in case I want to try overclocking?

My pc is getting old now and it's starting to lag behind even in games like WoW. Let alone all the new FPS games. I need a new graphics card. PCI-E came out right after I built my computer. I was trying to hold off as long as I could to get a new one.

So i built my rig a few...maybe more years ago. Here's what it entails:

AMD athlon 64 3400
k8n neo platinum mobo - has to be replaced to get a new gpu
couple gigs of poo memory - dont really care if it doesnt error
6800 gt gpu - doesnt do the trick anymore
450-500 watt psu - surely going to need replaced to power a new gpu

So I looked up on pricewatch and what not and priced stuff but I'm not sure which componants are the best bang for buck right now. My current computer was pretty bang for buck at the time.

I need something that's going to run everything out there to date and beyond a little. I need CPU,mobo, gpu, psu and ram. I have no clue which GPU's are bang for buck. The numbers have changed. I see like "nvidia 350 ultra" now. WHERE DID THE OTHER DIGIT GO! IM SCARED!

So can someone with like 5 mins to spare bring me up to date.

CPU- AMD Obviously - doesn't have to be quad core or anything.
GPU- Prefer Nvidia products. Never tried an ati card. stick with what i know.
ram- i dont care. cheap and doesnt error
psu- cheapest possible without zapping my new rig.

If possible maybe I can go to a site with a package and save some money? I probably wont have all of the money at once so I may have to piece it together.

If you got this far thanks for reading my gibberish post.

When AMD released the Spider platform I could not wait to build one, even though I hesitated in doing so. The first release Phenoms (xx00) had a bug that I was hoping AMD would fix, before I would take on my first Spider. When the second generation Phenoms were released (xx50) I read up on the reviews and saw that it was a better CPU. So I decided to proceed with building my Spider. The specs are as follows:

Phenom X4 9850
ASUS M3A32-MVP DELUXE/WIFI-AP Motherboard (790FX NB 600SB)
4 GB DDR2 1066 Crucial Ballistix Tracers (4x1GB Matched Set)
2 512MB 3870 Toxics (Sapphire)
750W Rosewell Power-supply
Thermaltake Xasier 6 Case
and an assortment of fans, HDDs ODD, to complete the build.

I still wanted more GPU power so after saving a bit more money I got two more 3970s, This time I got the 1GB version Toxics from Sapphire.

I spent alot of time struggling to over clock the 9850, and 3.0 seemed to be its max on an air cooler (Nirvana 120). I didn't want to break into the liquid cooling yet, and to this day I still haven't. So as AMD released faster CPUs I followed with each one in turn.

When WD released the 10,000 RPM VelociRaptor I had to have a pair of them in RAID 0 ........ so the motherboard got an upgrade to the ASUS M3A79-T Deluxe, (790FX NB 750 SB) The CPU was the 9950 and I put a Thermaltake Tough Power 1200W Power-supply in at the same time.

I ran this for a while until the release of the Phenom II 940. This was a direct drop and what a difference in performance that made. I was blown away with its benchmarks, and I was able to overclock this one to 3.7 stable, but it was way to hot with the current CPU cooler, so I went to the Ultra Chill TEC.

This didn't go as well as I had hoped, it did drop the CPU temps a lot, but it wasn't long before the TEC burned up trying to keep the Phenom II cool, so I have to go back down to stock clocks.

Finally I made the last upgrade that truly pushes the limits on the Spider platform, and had brought up the question, is it even a Spider anymore?

I left the AM2+ and moved to AM3 and DDR3 memory, put aside the Phenom II 940 and went to the 965. I also moved from the ASUS motherboard, and went with an MSI designed board, because the PCIE slots were better spaced (790FX-GD70 790FX NB 750 SB)

So the final specs to date:

AMD Phenom II x4 965,
8 Gigabytes, DDR3 16000 G.Skill Memory,
4x Sapphire Toxic HD3870,
MSI 790FX-GD70 Motherboard,
ProlimaTech Megahalems CPU cooler sporting one Scythe Slipstream 120mm fan and one (Scythe) 140 mm (1900 RPM) fan (110 CFM),
2x WD VelociRaptor 300GB drives (Operating Systems)
2x Seagate Barracuda 1TB drives (storage)
1x Hitachi Deskstar 1TB Drive (storage)
2x DVD combo drives
1500W SilverStone power supply
4x 140mm Scythe (1900 RPM) case fans (110 CFM)
1x 140mm Areo cool case fans (38 CFM)
1x 120mm Thermaltake case fans (who knows)
2x Logisys Liquid Neon lights.

So I put the question to the AMD forums:
Has the "Black Widow" Morphed into a Dragon?

What do you think? and at what stage in her development did she cross that line?

Here are a few pictures for your viewing pleasure,

[L=http://i287.photobucket.com/al...ftheBlackWidow051.jpg
[/L]

[L=http://i287.photobucket.com/al...ftheBlackWidow036.jpg
[/L]

[L=http://i287.photobucket.com/al...ckWidowsPhotos065.jpg
[/L]

[L=http://i287.photobucket.com/al...heBlackWidow042-1.jpg
[/L]

Here is a few results of benchmarks of the final build

[L=http://i287.photobucket.com/al...hots/216893DMarks.jpg
[/L]

[L=http://i287.photobucket.com/albums/ll129/XTremdreamer/screen%20shots/VantageP14077.jpg
[/L]

Thanks and if you have any other questions I would love to answer them.

I Edited the Second link, Sorry I just realize I has two of the same.

Lately my systems been having a lot of problems. I was going to do a full upgrade in a month or two but with all these recent problems I figure I should just go ahead and do it.

I want to keep the total price around $500 and need a motherboard, processor, ram, PSU, and maybe a new case and maybe a new hard drive.

Here's what I'm thinking of so far:
Mobo: MSI GF615M-P33 AM3 - "><br ">http://.....ct/...16813130243

CPU: AMD Phenom II X4 945 Deneb 3.0ghz - "><br ">http://.....ct/...16819103675

RAM: G.Skill 4gb (2x2gb) DDR3 1333 - "><br ">http://.....ct/...16820231180

PSU: Antec Earthwatts 500W - <br ">">http://www...Pro...N82E16817371007

HDD: Western Digital 640gb - <br ">">http://www...Pro...N82E16822136218

I'm not really sure about that motherboard, I just picked a cheap good rated AM3 board. The total price is about $440. I wouldn't mind a new case but it has to be able to fit my HD 5770, and I don't need anything fancy just a plain case would be fine. I looked on newegg but didn't see any good ones that weren't really expensive.

EDIT: I'm not sure if I really need to go with a processor that good. Is quad core THAT much of an improvement? The Phenom II X2 550 is 3.1ghz and $60 cheaper so maybe that would be a smarter choice.

I've just purchased a Gigabyte GA-MA785GMT-UD2H motherboard, along with a SATA hard drive and SATA DVD Player/Rewriter. I've been reading the M/B manual prior to begining the build.

The board has five SATA connectors, 0-4. In the BIOS, the OnChip IDE Channel and OnChip SATA Controller are both enabled by default.

1. Should I disable the OnChip IDE Channel or just leave it enabled? I will not be using a IDE floppy (I don't think)...probably a USB floppy if I really need one.

2. Under OnChip SATA Type (0-3 connectors), my choices are Native IDE, Raid, AHCI. Well, I'm not using RAID since I will have only the one SATA hard drive. What about the other two choices? Which one should I choose, assuming that I will be using the above hard drive and DVD Rewriter?

3. Does it make any difference what SATA connectors I use for the hard drive and DVD Rewriter?

4. Finally, I will be installing Windows 7. Do I really need to make a SATA RAID/AHCI driver diskette to install the OS? I understand that Win7 has all the drivers I need.

Sorry for all the questions, but this is the first time with SATA devices.

Okay, the time has arrived to replace my well used and beloved ASUS A8V Deluxe board and Athlon 64 4400+ X2 with 3 gigs of ram. Questions I have are many and I hope that you fine folks here on the AMD board can assist me in making the right decisions. I built this computer in the fall of 2006 so it's showing it's age. Although it still runs like it did when it was new the games I want to play have outpaced it's ability to achieve adequate performance. So it's time.

Heres what I am thinking:

I want to buy the AMD Phenom II X4 955 Black Edition Deneb 3.2GHz from Newegg for $175.99.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/...?Item=N82E16819103674

I do game a a lot but I also run office software and use Adobe Illustrator and Dreamweaver. I also watch movies and have been known to encode an AVI or two. So I believe that this CPU should do it all for me without too much effort. Am I wrong?

I have a newer, about 2 years old, PSU from Thermaltake that I bought to replace a cheapo that went bad on me and taking 2 sticks of OCZ ram and one Athlon X64 CPU with it. It's a Purepower 600w with 2 12+ rails with 18 amps to each rail.
It's no longer available at Newegg but you can still look at the specs here:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/...?Item=N82E16817153042

Will that be enough for this chip and a nice Graphics card like the 9800 GT? How about if I use two of these cards in SLI? I have looked at one thats been posted here, a 750 watt unit but the price seems a bit high at about $150.

On graphics I'm thinking about this one: EVGA 01G-P3-N981-TR GeForce 9800 GT 1GB DDR3 PCI-Express 2.0 Graphics Card $133.51 at Amazon but the 512 meg card is $32 cheaper, will that extra 512 meg of DDR 3 make that much difference?

http://www.amazon.com/EVGA-01G...qid=1257045629&sr=8-2

I may buy a second card later and SLI them although I have never used SLI before and I'm not sure it will be worth it price verses performance wise.

I'm still looking for a descent case and have looked at several but again, price is a factor. I know I need one with good cooling and I like the bigger fans in the back top and front like the Thermaltake Element S:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/...?Item=N82E16811133077

One on Ebay for $50 plus $20 shipping new in box. Cases have been surprisingly hard to find in my price range of $50 to $75.

I'm up in the air about memory, still haven't really done a lot of research for it yet but I have been using some GSkill 1 gig sticks in my present machine and they have performed well with the 2 512 meg OCZ sticks. I am thinking of 2 4 gig sticks of descent ram to start and adding two more 4 gig sticks later on for a total of 16 gigs. It seems that modern mother boards come standard with 4 memory slots and can handle a total of 16 gigs of ram. I do a lot of work in virtual machines with VMWare Workstation so the more ram the better. I have been known to have a VM running while playing a game and alt tabbing between the two. The quad core CPU should help here as well I'd think. Your thoughts?

Thanks to any and all who reply. I really need advice here as I really can't afford to make a 500 plus dollar mistake. I will probably buy a motherboard and the CPU first together and then the other parts as I can afford them. Maybe I should wait until black Friday after Thanksgiving and see what kind of deals I can find then. Anyway, I await your thoughts.

Hi there, I'm new here and hoping I've some to the right place for answers!

I've been looking to upgrade one of my older rigs for a while now as it's getting a little dated! Anyways I am running an Asrock AM2NF6G-VSTA mobo (Chipset:MCP61 or Nvidia 6100v) with an AMD Windsor proc. I am hoping to upgrade to a Phenom II X4 955 Socket AM3 as it's a fairly priced and solid processor. I know that AM3 procs are compatible with many AM2 socket mobo's however when I contacted AsRock's support team they told me that AM3 processors wouldn't work in this particular motherboard. This was quite contrary to what I have been reading around the net. Ex.

http://forums.techarena.in/web-news-trends/1087957.htm

This link shows that my particular motherboard would support a AM3 processor. I am getting a lot of mixed signals from my various sources! :S

Could someone please shed a little light on the predicament I am in? I don't want to have to buy a new motherboard if it is not absolutely necessary as this is just a temporary upgrade before I invest in amore permanent system down the road. Does anyone know if it is tried tested and true that I can in fact run this AM3 processor on my AsRock Motherboard? Thanks in advance!
