Hello,

i like to set up a Desktop PC based on the AMD FX-8120 using IOMMU for the direct use of my Graphics Card (HD 7870) within the guest system in a VM (VGA Passthorugh) using Linux as host OS.
Because I can't find any definite information on the IOMMU compatiblity of my preferred mainboard (Gigabyte GA-970A-UD3) I thought of asking you.

If you don't know too, can you advice me a mainboard having the specs like the one I chose supporting IOMMU?
Is there a global rule what models/chipsets support IOMMU? (read of 970 and 990 chipsets having support)
Is IOMMU support directly connected to the ability to setup IOMMU in BIOS?

Do I have to be aware of the GPU being compatible with IOMMU, too?

Thank you very much!
Thorgas

Hello,

We need to choose hardware platform for our network processing appliance (common 1-2U server, not an embedded device). Currently we're going to use only base hardware, without specific hardware like NPU or FPGA. I have experience with Bivio 7000 platform - high performance platform for network processing, which is very close to what we're looking for. Bivio in its solutions uses Freescale MPC7448 processors for application processing units (on which a user can run his or her custom applications like IDS, HTTP proxy etc).

I had a look at MPC7448 specification: 2 32bit cores, 1.6Ghz, 32KB L1i and L1d, 1MB L2, 32 general purpose registers and emphasize on superscalar abilities (4 (3 + branch) instructions per clock). The CPU costs about $250. From other side, for example, AMD Opteron 4280 costs about the same ($255), but has 8 64bit cores, 2.8Ghz, 48KB L1i and L1d, 1MB L2 per core, 8MB shared L3, 16 general purpose registers.

So why it has sense to use PowerPC processor instead of x86-46 for high performance network processing? From my point of view 4 times bigger number of cores and significantly larger caches must beat double number of registers and maybe better instruction level parallelism (however x86-64 is also superscalar processor). However it seems AMD Opteron consumes much more power. Is it the reason?

The typical workload for our application is memory intensive operations which requires gigabytes of RAM with large work sets (i.e. we have relatively low cache hit).

Many thanks in advance.

Hi Guys,

The short answer here: The FirePro installation software DOES NOT WORK on windows 7 64-bit. I had to do it manually, and I'm not certain I got everything on that I should.

Here's the long answer....

I got tired of my Nvidia 9600 GSO card an needed a Workstation card that was reasonable priced. I got a V5800 FirePro card from Newegg. Initially I just pulled the old card, installed the new card and tried to install the new drives. No dice. I re-installed the NV 9600 GSO the uninstalled the drivers (like the directions said I should) and then installed the new V5800 card.

The new drivers I used with the AutoDetect utility downloaded fine, began to install, then after the Install/Uninstall screen, there was no follow up screen asking to Express/Custom install....eventually things just kinda petered out and stopped altogether.

So just for grin I yanked the card out again and used the onboard Radeon 3300 on my motherboard and tried to see if that would install. That installation went flawlessly. So I went back to the V5800.

Upon reboot the driver said it didn't like the card....GREAT! (Not sarcastic, I mean actually joyous.... ) At least the Radeon driver wasn't working when the FirePro driver should have been.

So I try to install the FirePro drivers again (8.911.3.3 the current version) chokes after the Install/Uninstall screen before it. So I try the previous versions....THEY ALL CHOKE AT THE SAME POINT.

So in desperation...I go to the command line and "SETUP.EXE -INSTALL" and it SEEMS to be installing....but it never ends....so I reboot.

Finally, I look to try to install just the video driver. Someone mentioned if you go to the \PACKAGES\DRIVERS\DISPLAY\W76A_INF directory that you can install the driver. I double clicked on the 1st EXE in the directory, it began to install the VISTA drivers, then a prompt came up politely asking if I wanted to run CADALYST. YEP! Sure enough, I could get the driver to install. Since then I have individually install the control center, hydravision, etc.

PLEASE FIX THE BLOODY AUTOMATED INSTALLATION PROGRAM SO I DON'T HAVE TO DO THIS IN THE FUTURE PLEASE!!!!!!

Now I do have one problem with the control center. When I start it, it does not recognize my video card, so I can't adjust my video settings within the Control Center. Everything else seems to be working.

Other than that, I like the video card (so far)....

Mike Doerner

Hello...I am new here.....but I have a question...or two. What ...if any AMD processors will run AutoDesk products such as Civil 3D, Revit and Max 3D. All I see being spec'd these days are i5's and i7's or Xeons......are there vaild reasons for this...or is it just Intel seeding the market with their hardware. No so called "high end" workstations on paper look to be that much better than a comperable AMD based system....yet...I just see no one talking about building or buying them. I currently have 15+ systems that were running Autocad 2009/2010 just fine and are ALL AMD based machines...but Civil 3D and Revit are making these system drag their collective butts.
Hi,

I'm looking for recommendations on a dual CPU mobo for the following applications:

a) (Primarily a) Storage server - Running either Centos 6 or OpenFiler
Primarily NFS, Samba and iSCSI

b) A few virtual machines

Hopefully I can use the same motherboard, pin the IO stuff to one CPU, and the virtualization to the other.

I am not planning on running many VM's on that CPU, but just a few crucial ones that would benefit from fast IO (Database) and administration.

My plan is to get the mobo, and one C32 CPU (probably a 4180), and test it out, then swap in two Bulldozer CPU's when they become available.

I already have a big rackmount 4U 16 drive case, that will fit EATX and EEB mobo's.

Features I'd like to have:
IPMI, dual GB, and a number of PCIe slots(one or two of which will have a LSi 9261-8i in it), and might add an iSCSI specific server NIC.

I am looking at the ASUS KCMA-D8, and Tyan S8225A and Tyan S8226.

Anyone have any recommendations or options?

Any references to Bulldozer compatibility?

Thanks!

Hi,

I am planning to do some very memory intensive calculations - I need about 8 to 15GB of RAM per one CPU core, with usual 4 or more cores I need 32GB to 64GB of RAM. And I want the fastest CPU around.

I already asked in other section, looking for motherboard that can handle 32GB or 64GB of RAM with AM3 socket for Phenom II x4 980 3.7 GHz: http://forums.amd.com/forum/me...threadid=150827

Am I right that Phenom II x4 980 3.7 GHz is the fastest CPU around? Or maybe some opteron would be a better choice? Just by looking at clockspeed I don't expect this. Moreover my calculations are impossible to parallelize, so I need a FASTEST single core, not lots of cores.

thanks a lot for your help

Does anyone here have experience with running Solaris on something like an AMD 870 chipset? I mean, I don't care if audio doesn't work, because let's face it, what are you going to use that for on a server, but I would like all the rest like network, SATA 600Gb/s and stuff to work properly.

Does anyone here have experience with that? Or someone in the position to give it a go?

Thanks in advance,

Stry

I currently have a HP DL585 with 4 Opteron 8218 processors, 24GB of PC2-5300P memory etc. I was looking at replacing the processors with quad core ones, I think it will take up to the 8360SE processors. I've seen some much cheaper 8356 processors on EBay - but only 2 of them in the particular auction I found. Anyone think it's worth holding out for the 8360's to come down in price?

I was thinking of buying the 8356's and putting them into another server which only has 2x Opteron 2346HE processors - but not sure if the 8 series only work in servers with 4 or more processors though. I could run them like that until I can find another pair and then move them to the other machine. Anyone know if the 8356's will run on a 2 processor machine?

Sorry if these are stupid questions, but I've not done much with processor upgrades before - more building machines up rather than converting them.
Thanks
Nigel

I'm putting together a new server at the moment and I'm considering the AMD 640 3.0 quad core to power it, principally because its the kind of processing power I was looking for (actually a little more) and it's included in an attractively priced bundle I've seen.

However I'm intending to build that server in a 2U rack enclosure - that's 3.5" high. Allowing some of that depth for the case, motherboard, chip socket, the processor itself and clearance for airflow above the fan I don't see that it will accommodate an HSF much more than 2" high. So... how tall is the stock unit that is supplied with retail chips?

If I don't stand a chance with that can anyone recommend a suitable low profile HSF to use with it. I'm not intending to overclock and I'm not obsessive about super low temperatures so something cheap that does the job is preferable to a premium unit aimed at the overclockers.
