I've read about overclocking and 2.4 is pretty sucky and I want to make it better, but I don't want to much heat because my room gets hot easy, also I do not want to buy anything. My cores stay about 107F.Or 42C when just sitting there.I don't know how to overclock but I do know the information,I have 200 MHz bus that's for real and for effective and my min/max
Overclocking the new AMD 620 Athlon64 X4 Quad cpu on a MSI 790X Mobo

First of all, I want to say hello to everybody on the forum, since I'm a new user.
I didn't find any seperate section/thread for the Athlon64 X4 620 & 630 line, so I'll post my question here instead. ;-)

The 620 was a HUGE improvement from my old X2 4200+ (5900+OC), especially in games like Need for Speed - Shift,Prototype, Flight Simulator etc. I could up the resolution to 1440x900 or 1600x1200 with 4xAA 4-8xAF on a single ATI Radeon 4670HD card! Impressive stuff! Maybe the added hyperlink(?) from 1000MHz to 3000MHz will help, as well as two more cores to help process the gamecode,

So my question is: My equipment is as follows:
MSI K9A2 CF-F (Rev 1.0(less cpu-power mos-fet's,so cpu can't handle 125Watt cpu's)) Guess how long I've been waiting for 45nm quad-cpu's. :-| But I'm living in a danger-zone, because I don't know the threshold where the mos-fet power regulators fry. Would it help to mount passive coolers on eacxh of them, or should i just get a new mobo if (when ;-)) the MSI mobo fries? MSI didn't alert customers that the Rev1.0 of the K9A2 wouldn't handle 125W cpu's before AFTER a lot of customers reported that their mobos went up in smokee with the first Phenom's.
I even emailed MSI about an RMA, so I could give the mobo back, and buy an ASUS or Gigabyte that could take 125W, but MSI declined my complaint! So they redesigned the K9A2-CF so it could handle 125W cpu's,(rev1.1) but I didn't get any replacement. So All my computer parts from that point will be non-MSI, strangely. ;-) It's wierd how a company is willing to lose their customers that keep them alive for a replacement motherboard that probably cost them 10$. Kudoz to the customer service! ;-)

But this wasn't supposed to be a MSI fry (haha, got it?) but a simple question:

How much would you recommend me to up the FSB on the MSI K9A2, when the cpu-multiplier is locked at 13x, and the cooler is a stock (but have never gone over 60 degrees on any core yet). My ram is 2x1Gb Corsair XMS2 PC6400 CL4 DHX EPP running at 2.1v (I've run them at 1180MHz for a little while w/o problems.)

So, can anybody recommend how warm the Athlon II 620 can be without damaging either the mobo or the cpu?
Or maybe there isn't any answers to my problem? Maybe I just have to test the limits of my motherboard and CPU before they fry? Maybe I should consider a nw motherboard for my AMD X4 620 cpu? In that case, what board would you recommend? Lastly, I apologize for my english, since I'm not an englishman. ;-)

Best regards from
Chiron69
Bergen Norway

Today I was at microcenter picking up a few things for a client and stumbled upon some $2.99 140mm case fans, I needed one to completely fill all the fan placement areas in my coolermaster rc690. When I got home I threw the fan in, moved some other ones around to even it out and started playing some GTA 4. I looked over to my secondary monitor with the sidebar and the everest sidebar deal and saw my cpu at 42 celcius and thought that was kind of odd, it usually dosent get quite that high and it should be lower with the new fan. So I looked into the front of my case and saw that the fan on my Zalman was not even spinning! almost had a heart attack! When I was moving wires around one got caught in the fan and held it up! I feel pretty lucky about it, but thought that it was kind of interesting that running at a pretty heavy load I didn't even need the CPU Fan

Anyway, I was wondering if anyone else has this case or a similar one, and wondering about some airflow tips. I currently have this going:

140mm at bottom pulling air in
120mm in front of HDD pulling air in,
2 120mm on side pulling air in,
1 120mm on the back pulling air out
2 120mm on top pulling air out,
1 80mm behind the CPU pushing air in

I read somewhere that you want negative pressure in the case, but I'm not even sure that is really possible with this case, there is a lot of space for the air to get through, for now it seems to be keeping it cool enough, the ambient temp in the room is about 21 Celsius and im sitting contently at 23 Celsius at idle and up to 31 c at 100% load (everest stress test). I guess what I'm asking is if anyone has recommendations on how I should set these fans up, or if the way I'm doing it is best.

Hi Everybody

I have this old Athlon XP 1700+ in home while we use it as an internet connection sharing server to 6-7 other PCs. And thanks to it's AMD core it works really great since 6 years ago (I think).

Currently I need to have it almost 24/7 online on my desk, and being a server means it needs to be a silent worker, But It's old High Speed fan is so noisy that if you spend 1 hour with it your ears won't hear anything (you should experience it, I'm becoming a deaf right now)

Last year one my Athlon 64 3000+ (Orleans) for socket AM2 gave his life to other hardwares inside my PC. Could I use it's clean, quite fan and replace this old noisy one. It's an emergency, make haste or I'm going to hospital today.

PS: In our city we couldn't find the appropriate fan for Socket A.

Thanks in Advance

Hi all.
i'm trying to change my cpu from a 4200 to a 7850.
my motherboard: GA-M55SLI-S4
4G RAM, 9800GT,bla-bla.

I looked at the cpu support list.... and for my bad luck it doesnt support it.

BUT.... its an AM2+ socket and the motherboard DOES SUPPORT IT. (am2+ socket)

SO.... if you install an AM2+ on a AM2 motherboard the system bus speed will

downgrade from HT3 to HT1. However the frequency of the AM2+ cpu will not be

impacted. Thats great.....BUT.... after updating to the latest BIOS i changed the cpu

and......NOTHING. not even blue screen!!! Oh yea i also changed to a 650w power

suply. I know its a bit old... but i only use it for flight sims, & 2cores are just right.

has anyone tried this??? can it be done?

Then i wondered would i be better off getting this CPU, over getting a AM2+ X3 or X4 CPU. would those extra cores make any difference over the 7850BE on a AM2 board ? or will the 7850BE be a better match?

This is my first attempt with some serious Overclocking...

So far, I've pushed it up to 3.4ghz; have had it running like that for about 5 days now, still stable. Pushing Far Cry 2 at full game settings, Crysis, UT3, etc... running 3dMark06... and so far haven't had any problems.

I am using the Stock fan and heatsink that came with the chip. Seems like a fairly heft Cooler. Friend has the 720BE and says my cooler is better then his Stock one.

vCore manually set at 1.350.

CPUz reports core Temps averaging between high 40's Idle and high 50's/low 60's under load.

I used the unlocked Multipliers to overclock.

So now I am wondering...

1. How much further can I go; without having to go out and purchase a fancier, more expensive cooler that I can't afford?

2. What tweaks do I need to make within BIOS, to keep it stable?

Ok so I decided I want to put some heatsinks on the mosfets on the motherboard. I was looking around at different sets, as well as what adhesive to use to accomplish this task.

Im really a bit nervous considering the word "adhesive" needs to be used. Im curious on some precautions as well as the proper way to do it all. Any tips, suggestions or websites/tutorials I should focus on? I have a feeling Im over-thinking this one, but its much better to be safe rather than sorry.

Most of the heatsink sets come with thermal tape, is this advisable?

I also intend on installing a 40mm fan on the NB & SB

Here are the parts I was looking at using:

Surface cleaner and purifier
Silenx 40mm
-EDIT-
Im putting these. on instead, along with changing out the thermal paste to AS5 under the NB/SB factory heatsinks, I dont intend on changing out these though, I kinda dig it the way it is other than the fans.

Any help is greatly appreciated!

In an effort not to thread hijack, this is where its been done here already.
Thanks for the Idea

Where can I purchase RAM or other components for this specific machine or is it so outdated it is useless to do so? Currently, I'm having a problem playing any type of video on it. The sound is like it is coming from a tunnel/well and the video skips at points in the movie.
Thanks for any help you may provide.
