My first comp mod

Well, long story short....bought some new parts....had some issues with the new parts so they are in the RMA process. So, I decided that while I was waiting I would mod my case slightly....make some holes....add some paint....and take my time....because I can't play any games so I might as well keep myself busy....LOL

So, here are some pics so far....

This is what it looked like before the mod job....

This is with everything disassembled, the bare chassis, has been rinsed off to get rid of all the dust that was on it and everything has been taped off that i don't want paint on.

As you can see I have marked out the area that I will cut out so that I can access the back of the CPU HSF backplate without removing the motherboard.

I am going to paint the chassis a gloss metalic black....I purchased some carbon fiber decals that I haven't decided if I am going to use or not yet and some other stuff. Should be fun....please feel free to add any suggestions that you may have for me....I have the time to do the work.....LOL

It looks really cool but I am not sure how practicle it is to work inside of....definately not a chassis that you use to display your components but rather just the chassis.

Not sure how well it it will stop component heat sharing but it will be interesting to see some real time temp readings.

My First Window Mod

Hey guys. I'm new here and after looking at all of the really cool cases here, i decided to mod mine a little.

I've been meaning to put a window in it for a while, but i never got around to it. Lately i've become a little bored with this case, so i decided to mod it to make it a little more interesting. I put some LED's inside it but after i realized that you couldn't see them at all with the case closed, i decided to put a window in it.

It's not perfect, but it looks a lot better to me especially on the inside. there are a couple spots where i goofed the paint a little and it started to develop some bubbles, but i've sanded down most of it and repainted.
I like it a lot.

The case is an older Rosewill r6a34-Sl

sorry no green AMD logo, i like blue better.
All of the lights were put together by me. Looks way better painted. I even repainted the exterior because while cutting the hole, i took off too much paint on the outside and the case had some scratches anyway. I learned the hard way to take the old paint off first.

for those interested, the system is nothing special; it has one of the slowest dual core's out there, but it's still pretty quick. However, i will hopefully be updating this next year with a Phenom II......

edit: Hey, has anyone else noticed how these case companies sell out there designs? I found 5 other cases that are exactly the same as mine. the only difference is the front panel gets switched out.
HEC makes 4 cases (the 6AXXXXX series) that are the same and Thermaltake makes the other one that's the same (the VA3000 models)

well i got it together,it isnt totaly done (but is any rig ever done-lol)

i used a mico MB because i only want 1 video card.
this will be a moble gamer to take to friends houses and if i go to a lan party
i was curious about the 785g chipset, if i dont like it i will use this MB for a server or HTPC with a 550 in it

i painted all the grills and the inside gloss white (bad pictures,sorry)
this is a great case to work with.

all the fans are blue and i replaced the red 65cfm fan on the V8 with a blue 90cfm fan.
i dont have it up and running, i will install the os tomorrow (havent decided on 32 or 64 bit vista yet)

i will post pictures when is is running,i am curious on how bright the leds are going to be with the closs white.
the fan controller has a switch to turn the leds off.

The open case. I have to disconnect all of the front panel wires from the motherboard, loosen two thumbscrews, and take off the bracket holding the GPU card before the tray can slide out. Whew!

Front view, Desktop

My X2 4200+ desktop is the one on the right in the Antec Nine Hundred case. The unit on the left in the scratched-up, butt-ugly case is my old 1.0B GHz PIII file server.

Side view, Desktop

This is my main desktop, called "Manchester." The big things you can see here are the huge Arctic Cooling heatsink on my Radeon HD 3850, the little stock K8 heatsink, and my lack of cable management. The Antec Nine Hundred isn't that great of a case for cable management, plus it's a tight fit with that huge GPU heatsink. There are only two HDDs in here as the Caviar SE16 went into the file server. The rest of the parts are shown in my signature.

Front view, HTPC

This guy is my HTPC, called "Barton." It sits in the Cooler Master Cavalier case that used to house my desktop, which is why it has the Athlon 64 X2 sticker on the front. The case looks pretty nice and hides well behind my TV stand that you see to the very left. If you look very closely at the bottom 5.25" drive bay, you can just see where I put the old Travelstar HDD and it's 40/44-pin IDE adapter. Note that the two Caviar SE16 HDDs in my signature are in the file server now; I replaced them with a single Seagate 7200.12 500 GB unit, which is very nice and very inexpensive. The rest of the parts are in my signature.

Side view, HTPC

This is Barton all opened up. I very carefully opened the side panel with it running as it has been running for 95 days straight (a new record, usually the power company has a momentary glitch more often than that) and I didn't accidentally want to knock anything loose and force a reboot. This machine is cobbled together from various parts I've picked up over time. The end result is pretty decent as the motherboard and CPU were the top-of-the-line in their day. There is actually a CPU in there; I put a 92 mm x 38 mm rear exhaust fan from a junked mid-2000s Dell Dimension desktop case on top of a Thermaltake Silent Boost heatsink to cool the CPU. It is almost silent and load temps aren't too bad (about 58 C; the CPU's max is 85 C.) Again, witness the crappy cable management. I don't care much here as the side does not have a window

File server

This is my file/print server that almost entirely consists of parts I pulled off a discard heap at a local computer store. It is a 1.0 GHz Socket 370 PIII Coppermine with a 133 MHz FSB on an old Shuttle MV25N micro-ATX motherboard with two mismatched 128 MB sticks of PC100. I put the old 250 GB WD Caviars from my desktop and HTPC into this unit and then popped in a cheap 4-port SATA-150 controller and gigabit Ethernet card. The machine boots from an old 80 GB laptop HDD screwed to the bottom 5.25" drive bay and attached with the gray SATA cable. The SATA card and GbE card were the only things I had to buy and they cost me about $35. The case is a pile of garbage- it is butt-ugly, scratched, missing the front USB and sound connectors, has a broken door hinge (door falls off if opened), and has cracks in the Plexiglas in the side window. But it holds seven HDDs and keeps everything cool after I cut the front punched-out fan grills with my rotary tool to improve airflow and decrease noise. It is pretty slow as the PCI slots have crap bandwidth in this board, but it isn't overly noisy and it is reliable, having the same 95-day uptime as the HTPC. This is probably the best example of my complete lack of cable management yet I will eventually get cable management down, but it takes time and this unit, like all of my units, are really built for go rather than show and the ugly cabling hasn't caused me any trouble.

I like these the old steel full tower cases with just front air ports, using thermally controlled fans for everything to keep fan noise to a minimum and placed on the floor at the side of the desk where I don't even see them unless I need to pop in a CD.

Water Cooling 780G Chipset

Im thinking about liquid cooling my AMD 780G northbridge due to the fact that it gets so hot that the slightest touch can lead to a burn. But i'm new to liquid cooling, and i'm unsure of which water block to use. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Well here I am ,I gotta tear everything out of my case so why not start a build log. I don't plan on doing much modding now as I am too busy , I'll wait till work slows down . But I couldn't help getting this thread started. Currently I did a little wire management on the 1200 and fit the mobo in , got the cpu, mem and hdd's , vid cards and sound card , installed ...I started up fine with no problems so far ...

Next we have the Supreme fx supplied with mobo and Xonar dx notice the differance in length ,I ran into some install problems with putting the Xonar in the default card slot ,but I was prepared ,,

The northbridge heatsing is blocking the way for anything bigger than the supplied sound device in the upper x1 slot ,, so
a secret package ..

nice how the Xonar came with a low profile plate ..

All done for now ,, I need to clean up the job and get that wire smaller but it works

I cleaned up my computer room to show you where Formula Black will be residing ...

clearly a few concerns with plates not sticking well , but its the best on the market right now and puts the stock cooler to shame.

I will do my own review as well once shes up and running. Ordered fed ex 2 day so it should be in come Tuesday or Wednesday.

I also ordered an added ram HS set due to the install not being made for 2 sides of the ram on the 285 GTX. This was to insure all the ram will be cooled with these.

Thats what she will look like all done. That's zotac's version and my GPU is a zotac 285 GTX so its going to be Identical.

BUT, I wont leave the 2 rows of ram un covered and un cooled. They will ALL be cooled and any and all other areas I think that can be enhanced with low profile HS's .

My first proper mod

I have performed my first mod that involved me setting to my case with my dremmel.

Its only a minor mod but a mod non the less.

The area to be altered

The issue that has prompted the alteration.

Cut the hole using my trusty dremel and cutting wheel and then ground smooth using two different grinding wheels.

Edging trim applied to protect any rough edges although they were pretty smooth any way.

Finally I can insert the sata cables without bending them at 90 degrees.

Sata 1 and 2 are still fairly unusable but I would never need to use more than four anyway and if I suddenly found I needed to I can just cut the whole a little wider.

Got my new case today, a Thermaltake M5 with side window, and I think its a great case, very pleased I bought it. Only cost me £60 are the quality is excellent. I was hoping for the version with the black insides but they are discontinued so unfortunately mine has grey interior. However I plan to add blue l.e.d fans so this isnt that much of a problem.

The case comes with 2 fans, a big 140mm intake fan at the front and a 120mm exhaust fan at the rear. There is space to add an exhaust fan at the top of the case (which I intend to do) and a space to add a 70mm fan behind the motherboard (not sure if im going to do this yet)

The only criticism I have with the case is the front panel isn't very tightly secured, its very easy to pull it off, but as I wont be moving my case very much this isnt really an issue.

My cable management isn't very good I know (its tidier than my old case) but I did the best job I could, although its still quite messy. This case is much more spacious inside so there is still plenty of space for air to flow. Im wanting to illuminate the whole case blue, I figured the top mounted fan would do this but then I realized my huge graphics card is in the way so it wont be able to illuminate the whole case. Is there any other way i'll be able to do this?

I have been doing SFF builds for quite a while and lately switched over to the ATI camp (have always been AMDs #1 fan) I am really tired of the case mfgrs failure in designs so I took it upon myself to put up or shut up...
(so Mfgrs PAY ATTENTION)

Ok its simple PS on the top of SFF cases = Epic Fail...
(not only does it make it hard to use ATX mobos and decent CPU coolers but it really limits GPUs as well...

And dont get me started on how lousy the cooling is...

So I made my own case modeled after the Qpack/Microfly. I shrunk the case a bit smaller then the qpack and made my own CarbonFiber mobo tray.

the PS, Hdds and DVD are under the mobo tray freeing up tons of room up top for any GPUs and a proper CPU cooler..

Lapping Cpu

I went ahead and lapped my cpu. Just got it back in the system with some Arctic Silver 5. So far it looks like I am getting a decent temp reduction, about 6c at the moment. This is the 5th cpu I have lapped. Used 600,800,1000,1500,2000 grit. It came out so good you can read the lettering off the camera lense on the original pic, but the same pic posted on here is alot smaller so it is difficult to read

I just OC'd my AMD 940 to 3.5 ghz and I'm currently running the stock cooling system on it. My temps at max load for 30 minutes get up to 54c. Wondering what I should upgrade to for a CPU cooler, I am looking to eventually run it up to 3.7 but want to make sure im running cool enough before I do so.

Any suggestions would be appreciated

well i finally started with the Bamboo case.
designed and rough cuts.
a few pictures now that it has some shape
i just used the MB tray and the Drive Bay from my Kandalf case that was sitting in the garage.
it is painted blue by me,but i will end up painting it black or red (dont know which yet)
i have 10x120mm 78cfm red led fans,but might only use 8-3xtop (exhaust),1xrear (exhaust),2xfront (intake) 2xbottom (intake)
i will see how my temps are and will add a couple in the side if needed.
the cutouts in the side will have metal mesh (type unknown)
or i might use acrylic instead-i am still deciding
i hope i can get most of the cutting and cnc programming done this weekend (i will use our cnc to make the cut outs).

i havent cut my sides yet,and i have to cut a wire hole in the MB tray.
i have 1.25" of space behing the MB tray for all my wires.
i might also cut out the back of the tray and put a fan on the backside.
i also am going to turn the PSU horizontal and center it in the upper back part.

i should have more pictures by monday

Heat source suggestions for shrink tubing

I will be sleeving my fans for my case mods in the coming weeks and wondered if anyone had a sugggestion for a heat source for me to use on the shrink tubbing. I will do quite a bit then will not really need it for much else. I looked at heat guns at some Hardware stores but really do not want to buy a high dollar item. I know I could use a candle or lighter but really am concerned about damage to insulation on the wires.

I guess it is the more adequate place to post these pics, I have some time making a Ruby´s inspired character for the sims 2 game and here are the first pics, as I´m a bit clumsy for clothing, clothes were made by a 14 years old good friend from Mexico in his first project for bodyshape.

As it is a work in progress, I know it needs some additional tweaking and any suggest will be well received, in the other hand I would like sharing this sim for free in some sims related site, perhaps my own section at Back Alley Sims (JR´s Eastern Shrine), but agent Ruby is AMD´s trade mark, I don´t know about AMD policies for permissions and this kind of things, if some mod or AMD staff can give me a clue I´ll be very grateful for this.

Motherboard Heatsink Mod

I recently did a small mod on my mb. I removed the north and southbridge heatsinks and removed the old dried up thermal crud that they use. I can't see how that old stuff was even doing any good. I reapplied OCZ Freeze Thermal Compound in its place. I also applied micro heatsinks all throughout the mb using Arctic Thermal adhesive.

This is the housing from a small motor I found. I love the design. The skull will be hosting the system Power & Reset switches (22mm & 16mm lamptron vandal switches, w/orange leds) The mounting plate I made (below) attaches to the upper half of the skull.

NZXT Khaos panels look cool, but the hang out in the wind... Maybe keep them and do BATMAN theme mod...lol

I'm currently building a rig (come tax refund time) based off the AMD Dragon Platform: AMD Phenom II 940 + Sapphire 4870 + BIOSTAR TA790GX (790GX). I'm also getting a window case with plenty of room to stick decals (either on the window or the black side). So I'm wondering: Will AMD be making decals of the Dragon platform logo? I know it's kind of petty (especially when you consider the killer hardware I'm putting inside it), but darnit, I'd love to have one (Of course, I have a thing for dragons, too).

Anyway, if plans are in the making, I'd love to know the wheres and whens of it!

Here is 1 idea I thought up looking at my home brew fermenter.
It could use I/R mouse/keyboard. Doesn't have to.
Maybe the PSU would be better below the DVD's for wire management I just thought of the heat aspect. This would raise the DVD's higher too.
A tube could go straight from the H/S to a fan above.
Extra internal fans can be added (e.g. memory, video).
External cool air ducts if needed cut into wall for PCI/VIDEO directing cool air up and sucked out the top no extra fans needed as suction (hot air rising) is all it needs.
The Mobo is turned 90deg as I feel the PCI/VIDEO a major cooling pain in a normal setup.
A wiring jig would have to be thought up for the internal PCI/VIDEO wiring.
It also gives cool air direct to the memory, and the back of the Mobo (always missed in cooling).
The top Fan's and bottom could unscrew for easy cleaning of the filters.
Looking at the Fermenter this all fits except the DVD's they will have to protrude out the side or sit above the fans in a covered box with extra filter covering all the fans to prevent dust falling in.

well today I went to office depot and bought a new desk for my self . after 5 years with the same small desk I really went BIG !! This is a huge desk and the first time I have had one this big !

I took about 8 hours to tear down computer and old desk , put new desk together ( they never come put together !) setup and hook up every thing ! but I have to say I love this huge thing ! and it was only $250.00 Dollars !
I even found my lumi disks !! now they have a new home !
