I have 2 identical PC rigs:

- AMD Athlon X2 64 5200+ 2.70Ghz
- 2GB RAM
- Asus M2A-MX with an onboard ATi Radeon x1200
- 250GB HDD
- Windows 7 Ultimate

I have installed Windows 7 on both PCs and had done the rating assessment (Windows Experience Index) on both PCs. However, the first PC has a rating of 2.0 for processor, but the second one got 5.8. What is wrong with the first one? It also shows high CPU usage than the second one. Can somebody please enlighten me about this? Is there any way I could fix this?

Hey there

I really can't find what's causing this issue.

Every time I load a page or open a new window it makes my sound go in a slow motion style, if you get me? It doesn't do it straight away when I boot up windows, it just randomly starts a few minutes afterwards.

I'll be listening to some music for example and it'll just stutter and be in slow motion for a couple of seconds until the window is open and fully loaded, same with a web page.

I've set minimum CPU power to 40% and Cool n' Quiet is off in my BIOS. 40% of my CPU should be able to handle 3 IE pages, windows media player and MSN. Surely?

Any idea's?

Thanks in advance for any help.

I'm running:

Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit

AMD Athlon 64 X2 6000+ Black Edition
Asus M2N-E SLI
2gb RAM 533mhz 4 x 512mb Sticks.
My pc will not post, I'm a decent computer wiz and I have concluded that my cpu is dead. But before I wait the RMA process I thought I would see what other people would have to say.

I have the athlon 64 x2 6000+
First I thought it was my motherboard because when I would turn on the computer the fans would go on normally, stall for a bit then go back to normal with a black screen. I tested the psu at that time with a tester and it tested okay. So I sent the motherboard in for a new one, or to get fixed. I got it back plugged in the psu and it wouldn't even turn on. So I tried another psu and It did turn on, so I ended up buying a higher power psu because that spare I tested with is not good enough for my gaming pc. I got the new psu plugged it in, fired right up but still no post, no beeps nothing. I took out the ram and it did beep at me so I think the motherboard is okay. I tried another psu still no beep. then I tried it without the GPU and I got it to beep but it was not a post beep its a little longer and has a stutter in it. I tried everything from resetting the CMOS to checking all the plugs. So I think its a cpu issue. I even reseated the cpu.

(my first post )

Hello All,

I recently installed Windows 7 Pro, 64bit, on a machine with a X2 4200+ (S939). All seems to be working well, except the CPU speed doesn't seem to vary according to load - i.e. Cool n Quiet doesn't seem to be working properly. (CPU speed measured using AMD Power Monitor v1.3.1) I've used "Balanced" and "Power saver" plans, to no effect.

An entry in the Windows System event log hints at an explanation:

Source: Kernel-Processor-Power
Event ID: 6
Description:
Some processor performance power management features have been disabled due to a known firmware problem. Check with the computer manufacturer for updated firmware.

This is the only error in the log.

However, the machine (see signature) used to run XP Pro, SP3. Cool n Quiet behaved perfectly on that - CPU speed adjusted automatically. So from that I take it the BIOS is compatible. Having said that, I can't find any settings in BIOS to enable/disable it.

It might be that it really is a BIOS incompatibility, or it might be that the processor driver needs a tweak.

Just thought I'd pass on the info. Maybe someone out there knows of a fix.

Cheers

Hello,

I have a computer with a AMD Athlon X2 processor on a ECS KN1 Lite Motherboard (nforce 4 chipset). Until now, i was using Windows XP SP3 without problems, using the AMD Driver Processor in order to get the processor properly working: It is know that windows had problems with AMD Dual Core processors, cause it used them like a normal 32 bit processor. In order to fix that, it was necessary to have the windows hotfix for AMD processors and the AMD Processor Driver and/or AMD Optimizer.

Now, i upgraded to Windows 7, and after using it a while, my computer started to shutdown randomly.
At first i though that it was a hardware/temp problem, but i tried to replace the PSU and the Graphic Card, but the problem persisted.
I also ran temperature checks, however it was fine (around 50-60 degrees and the processor can take to 70 degrees), and also tried a mem test (it passed without errors).

Then i noticed that the shutdowns happened specially when i tried to install a program... the shutdowns happened always during about 80% of the program installation. After that, i ran the SO in safe mode and tried again to install the program: It installed without fails.

So then, i figured out that the problem was the Windows 7, i reinstalled (and even tried two differents copies) but the problems persisted. So i reinstalled Windows XP SP3.
On Windows XP, i tried to install the same program and it works without fails... then, i installed both AMD Processor Driver (last version) and AMD Optimizer (windows hotfixes came already with SP3)... and tried to reinstall that program: It shutdown my pc

After that, i uninstalled both the processor driver and optimizer, and tried again: The program was installed without fails

So i think that there is a problem with Dual Cores processors on Windows 7.... (an XP too if you install one of those applications or both). I say this cause i already check PSU, Hardware, Electric system, Temperature, Memory, etc... and is a very high coincidence that the pc shutdowns particulary during the same point of the install process, with those drivers (or without on Windows 7).
Note that i never installed neither the processor driver or optimizer on Windows 7.

However... there always a possibility that the problem came for another reason, cause my brother has the same processor and Windows 7, and he doenst have any problem at all.. (we have differents motherboards altough)

Please advice or give your comments.

Regards.

I'm wondering how to monitor my Athlon 64 3200 on my ASUS A8NSLI?

Or, better still, monitor the CPU AND the fan.

I had an A8NSLI blew up the CPU because I ignored overheating warnings.

Now I've got another - but I no longer have something in the system tray that monitors the CPU and I don't know where I got that other one from nor where it is now, nor how/what/where to get something else.

What's happening is the fan is beginning to make a 'growling' sound. As best I can make out it is the CPU fan.

It starts off when you boot quite okay but a couple of seconds or so into the boot it suddenly switches into a higher speed mode - or sounds like it does, I can't visually see any difference. And that higher speed mode is when the 'growling' starts.

The growling is the result of vibration. You can even feel it in the case.

I assume the vibration is the result of the bearing of the fan giving way.

Can anyone help me out with some directions as to how best handle this problem?

regards,

ab

I've had the L1N64 board with two FX-74's for a while now. I only recently decided to go into the BIOS and see what the temperature was. The first CPU was at 55C and the second was 72C. Not sure why there is such a difference or why they are even that high. They are using the stock AMD heatsink/fan which seems fine to me. I bought some thermal paste and went through that whole process to end up with the same result.

I doubt it, but is this normal temperature? I suspect my machine has been like this since day one. It had never occurred to me before. All of this is in a XClio A380 case with a huge 36cm fan on the side. I am also running two nVidia GeForce 9600 GTs with SLI.

Any thoughts?

My CPU keeps overheating. When it gets to around 80 degrees celcius it shuts down without a shut down sequence.

I've removed the heatsink, reapplied thermal paste, cleaned any dust from the heatsink and fan, put it back on, taken the side off the computer case and it still gets hot if I do things like use Facebook apps or run an AVG virus scan. Playing games of course makes it do the same thing.

If I close the browser or anything that uses the processor, the temp starts dropping straight away till it gets to around 54-56 degrees celcius.
I have a AMD A64 x2 4200+ 2.2GHz SKT 939 Processor ADA4200DAA5BV.

In searching I found the following 2 upgrades / tweeks for this processor.

Is it OK to use them on the same system at the same time?

1) AMD Dual-Core Optimizer Version 1.1.4

The AMD Dual-Core Optimizer can help improve some PC gaming video performance by compensating for those applications that bypass the Windows API for timing by directly using the RDTSC (Read Time Stamp Counter) instruction. Applications that rely on RDTSC do not benefit from the logic in the operating system to properly account for the affect of power management mechanisms on the rate at which a processor core's Time Stamp Counter (TSC) is incremented. The AMD Dual-Core Optimizer helps to correct the resulting video performance effects or other incorrect timing effects that these applications may experience on dual-core processor systems, by periodically adjusting the core time-stamp-counters, so that they are synchronized.

2) AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core Processor Driver v 1.3.2.16 for Win XP / Server
2003 (x86 and x64)

Allows the system to automatically adjust the CPU speed, voltage and power combination that match the instantaneous user performance need.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Todd

Hello to everyone, this is my first post in the forum.

I would like to know if somebody could help with an issue I am experimenting on my computer.

I have an Athlon X2 5600+ Windsor, on NF61S Micro AM2 SE motherboard.

It has some heat issues: when put under some load (like compiling a program or encoding some media) its temp rapidly increases up to 100 °C and over if I do not limit the CPU usage of those processes manually.

But the most strange behavior is another one: I dual boot Ubuntu Linux 64bit and Windows XP Home (32bit, obviously).
Under Linux, normal temp is around 40-50 °C, fine I think (even if it increases as described upon when put on load).
Under WinXP, it is always over 80-90 °C, and, even with the system totally idle, it increases until the pc shuts down due to overheat.

I have already disabled on the BIOS the SmartFan.

This is the link to the CPU-Z report:
http://interferon.drivehq.com/cpuz.html

If anybody can help me, it would be greatly appreciated!

Games started freezing a while ago and I've been going insane trying to pinpoint the problem for a while now. I was testing each stick of RAM last night individually last night and when I was fiddling with them I noticed the CPU was freakishly hot - like burn marks if I touched any part of it for more than 2 seconds.

So I monitored my CPU temp while playing TF2 and each core got up to 92-93c and it froze pretty shortly after that, they were both at 91c when it finally did. "Local Temp" on SpeedFan was inching towards boiling temp. While I'm not sure what exactly "Local Temp" is, I'm sure its not good that it's that hot.

Do you think this might be it? Just FYI the computer has never restarted itself, it just freezes (sometimes with looping sound, sometimes with no sound, sometimes with the music still playing, etc. all depends on the game).

If you do think this is the problem, how do I fix it? Its indeed caked with dust and I plan to get some compressed air ASAP, do you think dirt can account for such a high temp?

Good day! My 7750 BE [Stock] registers a 43c cpu temperature in Everest [idle] and gets as high as 60c playing games. Each core has a temperature of 25-28c [idle] and gets a temperature of around 40-45c each playing games. AOD also has the same temperature as Everest for each core. Is this just fine? Should I be concerned with the 43-60c cpu temperature reading or should I ignore it and just monitor each core's temperature? Is the 7750 BE's 70c max temp, for each core? CPU temperature in the bios registers at 45-50c. Is my board [MSI DKA790GX] giving the wrong temperature reading? I didn't screw around with the voltage yet. It's still set in auto.
I'm running windows XP, this only happens if I update my CPU drivers.

The stutter will occur in games and other applications. If try to type something and hold a key down it will work for a few seconds then stop. Once I hit it again it will do the same thing. Say if I hold backspace it will delete a few letters then stop and so forth. If there's anything running in the background it will stop and stutter as well.
I also see it in games the game will run normally for 5-10 seconds then it will stop the sound will loop for 1-2 seconds and then resume running normally.

Now I know other users have similar problems, but nothing seems to work for me. I tried several different drivers. I tried using the Dual-Core Optimizer. I tried turning off Cool n Quiet in the BIOS. I read several forums and suggestions.

The funny thing is it only happens after I update the drivers. If I leave the default XP driver on things work fine and the stutter is not there. Why update then? Well certain games have timing problems and end up completely unplayable, some are to fast some have graphical anomalies or skip like crazy. Once I update those problems seem to be rectified, but then I get the annoying stutter.

I am at a loss as what to do. The only thing I can think of now is to flash my BIOS, but I just can't see how this could be connected. Any help would be appreciated.
