Hi all,

I have been a lurker for a long time and I finally have something I really need advice with. I figured who better to ask then the CPU brains here? Anyhow, nice to meet yopu all...

I am working on an upgrade but for now I have a couple older cpu's to work with and I need to know which one is faster...

# A = AMD Athlon 64/3700+/1M L2 cache "ClawHammer" = This CPU will be paired with the K8-x Motherboard and 2 gigs of mem

#B = AMD Athlon Barton 3000 with a7n8x deluxe Motherboard and 2.5 gig of mem..

I believe the 3700 starts at about 2200 mghz and can be over clocked to 2400--I actually had this cpu running at 2475 stable ...

I cannot get the Barton running past 2150 with a high performance fan without being to unstable. I am also having issues with using large sata drives...

I currently have both of these cpus and I am just trying to decide which one I should use until I can build my dream pc which will happen in about 2 months. I am an avid WOW player and I play other games as well. I also use my pc for media recording, converting etc...

I am currently using the Barton but I am thinking about switching back to the 3700 just for stability. Which one do you guys think is faster and better for me for the next 2 months.. I am also a web designer/ developer so reliability is important and I often use CS3 and Dreamweaver as well in addition to databases..

Thanks much... I just wanted some options before I go through this switch today. It is a RPITA with my current case..

Rich
webdevoman

-

Various searches make it sound unlikely, but I'm wondering if a CPU upgrade to my reliable Presario would be possible, short of a kluged up motherboard swap.

Spex - Compaq Presario F557US (RZ330UA), 2 GB RAM, 100 GB HDD (next on the upgrade list), Sempron-M 3500 processor, Windows 7 Enterprise (trial)

And if possible, how practical? It would be my first laptop surgery. is it something an intermediate hobbyist (navy electrician) can pull off? How can i estimate power utilization to prepare for any power supply issues to consider?

These forums seem to have a very high signal to noise ratio- thanks in advance for any input!

I know this is probably a dumb question but will the Athlon work and will it be better, the same, or worse? I'm desperate. Thank you.

Well I found out it will work and athlon is much better than a sempron.

Hey everyone, I'm new to the AMD Processors Forums.

I'm here to learn how to overclock my AMD Sempron 3100+ processor, hoping to get some at least better than ~1.8GHz... At least I can still play cod4 on this.

Here are my specs:
OS - Windows 7 RC, build 7100. 32-bit.
Processor - AMD Sempron 3100+, ~1.8GHz
Video Card - Nvidia GeForce 7800 GS - 256mb
Memory/RAM - DDR (don't know the exact number, tell me if I need it) - 2gb
Motherboard - Acer K8VM800MAE
Power Supply - 300W (tell me if more info is needed)
[If I missed anything, let me know]

I know what you're thinking... "It's 2009, why does this noob still have this old processor!?" Meh, this computer is 5 years old and teh only things upgraded are the Memory/RAM and Video Card. I'm only 15 and all the places to get a job around here are Fast Food... which requires age 16 or older. Anyway...

So yes, I'm hoping to get this overclocked to at least 2.2GHz.

Really want to test something on this pc :>

I am doing some research into power consumption with various cpu's and setups with a view to building a low power/always on file server/p2p machine. My normal setup is in my signature.

I've installed Windows 7 64bit as a trial because of it highly configurable power savings functions. I then plugged my system into a power meter to measure the consumption. Now by no means is this a properly engineered test, but I thought it might provide some interesting data to compare against.

My Phenom II 940BE (all bios settings on auto) pulls 200W on start up. On Prime95 using the large FFT test it pulls 193W on load. Idling it is 113W.

Idle temp: 35 degrees
Full load: 51 degrees after 1 hour.

I then fitted a Sempron LE-1100. It's an energy efficient cpu with a TDP of 45W as opposed to 125W for the 940.

On start up it pulls 193W. On Prime95 using the large FFT test it pulls 135W. Idling it pulls 117W!

Idle temp: 25 degrees
Full load: 37 degrees after 1 hour.

Obviously, this is a rough test and I have a lot of hard drives in my system that bumps up the overall base power consumption, but given the specced difference in TDP I am disappointed with the results from the Sempron as I had read of low power draws of ~20W when idle over at Tom's Hardware for these Sempron cpu's.

By comparison, my old Athlon 64 3000+ in an ECS7610 mobo pulls 120W on full load at 40 degrees C and 90 in idle at 21 degrees C.

It would be interesting to see how a 4850e or 5050e behaves. I suspect they will offer similar power consumption to the Sempron whilst maintaining a useful performance margin when required.

Hi all,

I've recently been handed a dead emachines W3118 by a friend with the request that I fix it. It has a sempron 3100+ in it. (sticker on front says: 1.8 Ghz, 256 KB L2 Cache, 1600 MHz Bus). I've come to the conclusion that a new motherboard is likely needed. The motherboard has K8MC51GLF printed on it. (a sticker on the board says C3S6350226 K8MC51GLF). Does anyone have any suggestions on how I can either 1) locate an identical motherboard to buy, or 2) identify another currently available motherboard that would be compatible with everything else that is already in the computer. (such as the 256 MB DDR SDRAM)

Thanks in advance!

Hello everyone. Raffi here. I have a problem. My games keep crashing to desktop & i suspect it could be caused by my cpu. I recently swapped my cpu, a Sempron 2600+ with my dad`s Sempron 3000+ cpu. I used to run games & everything fine with the 2600+. My dad`s pc has been sold away & i can't swap it back again to be sure its the cpu problem. Reason i swapped it because i want to overclock to higher speeds than my 2600+. Games that i played & then crashed to desktop were, L4D, C&C RA3, Fear 2 demo & BF2. I ran memtest & vista's memory diagnostic tool & passed. Reformatted, played with new & old drivers, updated bios, ran at stock speed & still the same.

My specs are as followed, Amd Sempron 3000+, Gigabyte GA-K8NE, Kingston DDR 400 mhz 2x1gb, XFX 9800GT, Western Digital 320gb sata hdd, Seagate 80gb ide hdd, Maxtor 80gb ide hdd, BenQ dvd-rom, Silverstone 500w psu. I don't have a problem with putting it in, but want to have some idea that it might actually work.

Any Help? Thank.

UPDATE: I have read through alot and the post from ganstafm 2/6/07 titled AM2 vs AM2+. However my interest is not maximizing the CPU HT capabilities. Until I bought this PC I was still using and AMD K6 3 running at 600Mhz and only 768Mb RAM, I don't plan an upgrade for at least another five years. That is unless I break it.

I have a relatively old setup running XP Home with an AMD Sempron 3000+. Everything worked fine until I installed SP3. My system slowed right down. My audio software (Sibelius) and other programs started to misbehave. I read about SP3 problems with AMD processors and Creative soundcards, so I tried to uninstall SP3 and revert to SP2. OK, big mistake. It took ages to get everything running, but it seems so slow. It took over a minute to load the Help and Support page to get my systems information!

I've checked everything out within my limited knowledge, so wondered if it is actually a CPU problem.

Details:
OS Name	Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition
Version	5.1.2600 Service Pack 2 Build 2600
System Manufacturer	VIA
System Model	K7VT4A+
System Type	X86-based PC
Processor	x86 Family 6 Model 10 Stepping 0 AuthenticAMD ~1999 Mhz
BIOS Version/Date	American Megatrends Inc.
Hello,

In a computer I have built, I am going to replace my Sempron 64 processor with a dual core Athlon x2. As best I can tell, I must first remove the heat sink/fan assembly of the installed processor in order to access the processor latch.

Since the installed AMD heat sink uses an adhesive thermal compound, how difficult will it be to remove the heat sink? Will it require enough force to potentially damage the mother board? What is the best way to remove the heat sink safely?

Tom Weeks
