Hi everyone,

For a long list of complicated reasons I won't go into I'm trying to figure out if I can upgrade the Opteron Santa Rosa 2216 CPUs in a HP DL365 1U server.

I've been out of the CPU scene for a while and I honestly have no idea about the forwards/backwards compatability of Opteron Socket F CPUs

To be specific I have an HP DL 365 with two Opteron 2216 (1MB L2) Santa Rosa CPUs.

I would love to be able to put a newer Opteron CPU with more cores and/or a faster CPU clock into this machine.

I've read the Wikipedia Opteron page and I see there are more advanced Socket F CPUs, but I have zero idea what I might be able to upgrade to. I am hoping some smart person in this forum might know! Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Best
Jonathan

I have some HP DL585 servers on different sites but running exactly parallel combinations of virtual machines on VMware vSphere4. Some servers do not have a"p" suffix and have 2356 processors. Some do and have 2378 processors.

When looking at the memory utilisation of the VMs, all the VMs on the "p" servers are locked solid at 100% utilization. All those on the other servers are bouncing around grabbing and releasing memory as expected. The Virtual hardware is exactly the same in both cases.

Can this be anything to do with the different behaviour of the the processors. I am vaguely aware that extra support for Virtual Systems is being introduced at processor level and presumably the latest version of VMware would be aware of this.

Only problem is it seems to be the latest processor that is behaving badly?

hi all,

this is my first post, greetings to all of you!

I need your advice on this topic: I would like to refurbish an old ASUS KFN4-D16 with two Opterons 2222. On the MoBo specs I see that they only support the 2222SE not the plain 2222... as you may realize I am not a specialist, but does it really matter so much about the SE/not SE difference? will a plain 2222 work on a MoBo which *officially* supports only 2222SE?? do you have any experience on that? any info is greatly appreciated!

thanks in advance
ciao,
v

Hello friends. I am looking for some information regarding operating temperatures of the AMD Opteron 2356 quad core processors. I have a box built with two of these and am getting temps of about 52C and 58C while under heavy load (gaming, converting, etc) Is it safe to run these CPUs at these temps for a couple hours? I have 60mm to 92mm fan converters on the thermaltake copper heat sinks and a Nexus 92mm fan on each one (http://www.newegg.com/Product/...Item=N82E16835610002). I really do not want to go any louder than I currently am. Can I do anything to improve cooling without noise, while not spending a huge amount of money?

Also, if it is fine to run these processors at 58c all day long, I am ok with that. I just am used to running at cooler temps.

Thanks,
David

Hi,
I am trying to measure the memory bandwidth for a particular type of operation on the AMD Barcelona machines. I ran into some issues and I figured that this would be a good place to ask those questions.

So, we have 4 sockets, each socket has 4 cores and each socket is directly connected to a memory bank. The 4 sockets are connected through a set of fast channels that allow two processes in different sockets to speak to each other. A process in one socket can also access the memory bank associated with another socket via these channels. Obviously, the cost of accessing its own memory bank would be lower.

Coming to the benchmark, each process allocates 2 larger buffers. A process reads "chunk" amount of data from one buffer and writes the same data in the other buffer. I am varying the size of "chunk" from 1 byte to 2MB and I time the entire operation. For the purposes of reading and writing data, I am using MPI_Send and MPI_Recv calls.

My observations/questions are as follows :
We have a total of 16 processes in one compute node. I ran the above benchmark for both the 16-way and the 8-way configuration. Though, each process is only accessing its own memory and not speaking to any other process, the 8-way configuration gave much better bandwidths than the 16-way. This indicates that there could be some traffic over the inter-socket channels as well, which is leading to some degree of contention.
So, when I do a malloc() from my C code, do I have any control over where the memory gets allocated? Obviously, if a process does malloc, it makes sense to have the buffer allocated in the memory chunk that is closest to it. Are there any hardware "tricks" to exert control over how the memory allocation is done? If someone could give some suggestions, it will be very helpful.

Thanks!

Hi,
I am designing a new CAD workstation using 2 - Opteron 2374 HE processors on a Supermicro H8DAE-2-0 motherboard. I plan on using a Cooler Master ATCS 840 case with a FirePro V8700 graphics card.

Unfortunately, none of these Opteron chips come with factory heatsinks and fans, anymore. At least not, from my distributors. And the AMD site does not seem to provide the info I need. The last Opteron I worked with was the 175 in my system. It came with cooling, even though I did not use it. I did not have any problem finding recommended cooler, then.

Could any of the more knowledgeable folks point me in the right direction, for what would be best to cool these processors? This is for resale and money is not as important as noise levels and efficiency. The case is closed on the sides, so appearance is not important, either.

However, the system must be able to ship FedEx without voiding any warranty.

I run a program called Milestone Xprotect I record high resolution security cameras @ 1440p. On my processor power monitor proc 0's 4 cores show steady useage from 0 sometimes up to around 75%. Proc 1's 4 cores show useage on core 3 from 0-around 40%, core 2 from 0-20% and cores 1 and 0 just a little useage here and there. I have the latest amd proc driver installed why are all the cores not sharing the load equally?
Thanks,
Will Mingione

I am building a workstation for modeling/animation, and I am not sure whether to wait for the new Istanbul processors or just stick with the current quads. I have done some research, but some questions remain.

1) Does anybody have any take on what the projected cost on an Istanbul CPU will be.

2) Will it support HT v3.1, and if so, will that help to lower the cost per Ghz due to its stock support of higher frequencies than HT 3.0? (i.e. higher stock frequency support = less overclocking = we pay less for higher clocked chips.)

3) If Istanbul is meant to be a drop-in for socket F, does that mean it will support DDR2 and DDR3 memories, unlike the Intel Nehalem architecture?

4) Is it worth dropping into a socket F, or are vendors going to make new chipsets with better support for Istanbul?

Any opinions will be appreciated.

First let me say that I am very happy that AMD has a lot of good information on their site in regards to their processors but what they don't have is a clear upgrade roadmap for people to view and be able to make decisions on their hardware upgrades.

My problem in particular is about my Opteron 1218 dual core workstation. When I first picked it up (a few years ago) the AMD rep explained to me that the 1218 was the second generation Opteron and would be upgradeable to Quad core.

Now that the system vendor has decided to EOL the workstation, I now feel left out in the cold. I am confused as to whether or not I can upgrade to a quad core Opteron or if I can go with the Phenom X4 or Phenom II X4.

Of course, I fully understand that I run the risk of the system BIOS not being able to handle the upgrade but I would rather purchase the most probable solution and if it doesn't work, I can buy 1 motherboard and build out a new machine instead of 3.

The board that I have is a AM2 socket and the workstation that I have is a SUN Ultra 20 M2.

Can anyone please help me make an intelligent decision!

Thanks

Eunix

Hey Guys,

Great forum!

Here is my whole story:

I am working with Microsoft and need a test server on whcih I may establish my Virtual Labs. I will use Hyper-V mostly. I will install Windows 2008 R2 64 Bit as the Host OS, 4 Windows 2003 Servers with Exchange 2007 on one of them as Virtual Machines, one Windows-7 Virtual Client, One Vista Virtual Client on Hyper-V. Later, I'll deploy Sharepoint on the Host 2008 OS itself.

Please keep in mind that this is just a TEST Server and will never be in production hence it just should be fast enough to take the software processing requirement of itself. There will be no clients hopping the server resources and taking up its share of processng resource hence just think that way when you make suggestions.

My requirement:

1. A decent Xeon E5410 equivalant 64 Bit Server class Qaud processor with Virtualization capabilities.

2. Compatible Dual Socket Mother Board with support of upto 16 GB RAM. Preferebly Asus or Gigabit as it easily available.

In Xeon, the best budget-need ratio fit is Xeon E5410 with SV5000VSAR MotherBoard which supports Virtualization and a RAM of upto 16 GB.

Now, in AMD, fisrts of all, there are limmited tools on the website to help me find the right motherboard and chasis. I went thru http://www.amd.com/us-en/asset...46808B_AMDIntelCom.pdf and saw that almost all AMD processors have lesser L2. It is concerning as being an Electonics Engineer and knowing the heart of processors myself, i understand L2 and L3 are very important.

Any suggestions which 64 Bit processor+motherboard with Virtualization technology will be best for me?

ANy Indians/Pakistani in the forum? Would love to discuss it with you as you will understand my budget and cost-benefi better.

With Regars,
Amit Saxena
