I've got an XW9300 workstation with two dual core Opterons 825. I can see both of them in Bios but they are not detected in Windows (vista or 7 64) and I can use only two threads - pressumably 2 cores of the 1st CPU. Why is that? Can I fix it somehow?
Even AMDCPUinfo shows only one Processor (with two cores) but when I go to device manager, four processors are listed under CPU. Why I can't use all four cores?
I really need multi core machine for my CAD/Rendering work so any help would be appreciated.

Hello friends. This is my first post to this forum. I've done some lurking, but I have found a significant problem that I was hoping to get some information on. My computer specs are listed in my signature at the bottom of my post.

I am running two Opteron 2356 quads on an MSI K9ND Speedster-wa6 motherboard. Bios tells me that my CPU0 temp is running at about 80C and fluctuates every update cycle by about 3C up or down. My CPU1 temp is steady at about 40C. First, is this a problem with the CPU or motherboard sensing the temperature? In windows 7, I have used CPUID's Hardware Monitor software to monitor temps and it reads my CPU0 at about 33C and my CPU1 temp at 34C at idle. SpeedFan 4.39 reads my CPU0 temp at 80C (and it fluctuates the same as my bios reading) and my CPU1 temp at 49C. I am very confused as to what is an accurate reading and what is not. I do not believe the bios temp of 80C. My motherboard has an automatic shutdown if the temp is that high and it is not engaging. I have my current fans set up to auto regulate RPM using the bios temps (do not have any other way of regulating the fans). Now, this would be fine if my bios reading was always reading high. Occasionally, it drops down to a reading of 20C (colder than the ambient temp of the room which is improbable) and my CPU0 fan just idles at 1200 RPM and I see the temp rise and rise on my CPU0. So, I run the risk of burning up the CPU. Any info on this problem would be extremely helpful. I have included a screenshot of my two software monitoring programs below this paragraph.

Picture of Temperatures

My second question relates to fan choices. This may be a silly question for some people, but bear in mind that I am just learning. I have AVC DA08020B12U CPU fans on my thermaltake heatsinks right now. They are 80mm fans (used a converter spacer to go from 60mm to 80mm) which run at max RPM 4800 with a dB rating of 46dB (much too loud for my purposes) with a 59CFM flow. My question is, can I use other 80mm fans which are technically listed as "case fans?" I have found some which provide about 45CFM at 35dB (much more acceptable noise level). If I can use these fans, I'll simply solve my problem above by replacing the noisy fans with the new ones and run them max whenever the computer is on (which would be sufficient to cool the CPUs).

I applaud anyone who reads this lengthy post. Thanks for reading, any info about how bios gets its temp readings or info about proper CPU fan usage would be helpful at this point. Cheers.

David

**EDIT - Here is a link to the current CPU fans I am using
Current CPU Fans

Hi,

Last week I swapped my Athlon 64 3700+ for an Opteron 180. This on an Asus A8N-E with BIOS 1013, running WinXP SP3.

At first the CPU was identified as Unknown. Tools such as CPU-Z identified it as an Opteron 280. However, everything else seemed ok. Yesterday I investigated a bit further and concluded that the BrandID value is wrong. It should be 44 but is actually 48. I tried various tools from CPU-Z to AMD's Cpuid, from Sisoft Sandra to GCPUID, etc. All say more or less the same thing. From docs at AMD the BrandID is matched to a certain string used to identify the CPU. Since Asus doesn't expect a socket 940 CPU to be plugged on a 939, I understand why it says "AMD Processor model unknown". But why the wrong ID and why doesn't anyone else seem to be affected by this?

The CPU markings I got before installing the CPU are:

OSA180DAA6CD
CCBWE 0530TPMW
1298675H59415

I also have screenshots showing the wrong value.

Today I've been reading about microcode updates. Could this be the cause for this problem? Can this value be set again to the correct ID?

Thanks for any help,
Bye!

Folks,
After the cpu upgrade, powernow no longer functions in vista ultimate 64. The op sys was installed with the 285s and while in low cpu usage they would clock down to 1ghz and 1 volt. That's nice for power and room temperature managment.
The 290s sit at 1.35 volts and 2.8ghz while idle. I reinstalled the processor drivers in device manager, they now show 290s (4 cores total) yet still will not clock down.

I would like to keep the room temp as pleasant as possible.

Is there a registry entry that can be added or verified, to insure that powernow is active??

Hi,

My processor is Opteron Family 15 Model 65 Stepping 3.
The processor has 2 cpus, 2 cores each.

I disabled ACPI, so there is no powermanagement at all. As a consequence I do not receive any TSC drifts on the different cores of the same cpu.

The timers look for instance like:

Core 0 (Cpu 1): 100.000.000
Core 1 (Cpu 1): 100.000.000
Core 3 (Cpu 2): 100.000.000 + 40 s drift
Core 4 (Cpu 2): 100.000.000 + 40 s drift

Unfortunately AMD dual core optimizer I installed does not seem to synchronize the cores across cpu boundaries. Is there anything I can do ? BIOS, device drivers, patches for Windows Server 2008 ?

Is there any explaination for this issue ? How can they differ so much right after the boot ? Thought the TSCs start with 0 after the boot. How can the difference of 40s be explained ?

Having such a huge drift, is there a way to resync the CPUs by any tool, instruction ?
(RMClock only sync the cores of one cpu but not across the CPU boundaries.)

Thanks,
Holger

Ok, I'm at a loss. I was wondering if someone has had a similar experience and hopefully a solution.

I'm working on a Rackable Systems 1U system using the Tyan S2881 Motherboard which has 2 2Ghz AMD Opterons and 4Gb RAM. It came with an IPMI PCI card in the PCI-X riser slot. I've removed the IPMI card and installed a PCI Firewire card in it's place.

I've installed CentOS 5.2 (using kernel-2.6.18-92.1.22.el5.centos.plus.x86_64.rpm), installed the firewire drivers, see the drivers in "lsmod", etc.

It all works great and is very speedy. Except the PCI Firewire card I installed in the slot previously taken by the IPMI card isn't recognized by either the OS or the BIOS (that I can tell). "lspci" shows no firewire card.

No matter what I do I can't get the BIOS to recognize it and present it to the OS. I've tried three different cards now (they're normal 32bit PCI firewire cards, one with the VIA chipset, another with the TI chipset), updated the BIOS to the latest version for the motherboard (v.2.07), cleared CMOS, still nothing. I have two of these systems and tried unsuccessfully on both.

When I disable "Quickboot" in the BIOS, the splash screen that comes up showing IRQ assignments doesn't show the card (or anything else I can see that would indicate the card is allocated an IRQ).

Has anyone else had problems with IRQ conflicts / issues on a PCI-X bus and if so, how have you solved it?

Thanks in advance,

Marly

I replaced a pair of Opteron 244 with a pair of Opteron 252. The system booted up but during the POST BIOS displayed "AMD processor model unknow", and Windows indicates that only one Opteron is recognized.

The BIOS version is the latest available. One of the Opteron could be defective but is there any other possible cause of this problem?

I replaced my AMD athlon 64 3000 by an Opteron 180 Denmark CPU. Cool 'n quiet is enabled in the (latest) bios, the latest drivers from AMD are installed, in windows the energy is set to minimum, but cool 'n quiet won't work.

My question: should an opteron be able to work with CnQ? If yes what am I doing wrong?

Opteron 165
Tomcat K8E
4 sticks of 512
Antec 480 Trupower

I've had this issue where I have to press the on/off switch many times to get the system to startup. Tyan suggested pulling the MB from the case to eliminate any grounding issues. I did that - no help. I removed everything except the video card and 1 memory stick. Still had the problem but I did not have to press the on/off nearly as many times. Tried each memory stick indivually and issue still exist but I can get it started with 6-10 pushes. I have incremented the memory voltage +.01 to +.03 where I have it now. I tried another PS - brand new earthware Antec 500W and it did not fix the issue. I even changed the on/off switch, battery, and tried the screwdriver across the jumpers. I think the memory controller is on the CPU. Anyone have an idea what might be going on here? Tyan support thinks its the CPU.
