I've purchased a (probably not new) Barcelona 2346 1.8 GHz CPU. I swear this is the last time I'm buying from a 3rd or 4th tier vendor to save a couple of bucks. Reason? It didn't arrive in the AMD PIB packaging.

Just below the AMD logo is this "2006 AMD". Is this chip soon to be 3 years old? I have a hard time believing that the processor sat on a vendor's shelf for the last couple of years.

I have got a server AMD mp1800 and looking at setting this up at home
2 X CPU's (speed 1533?)
4 X ram slots
1 X AGP
4 X PCI? .. longer slots??
2 X PCI slots
a chip on the board says amd 765

I put in some DDR400 ram and it would boot into bios, but could never put an OS on, kept getting the blue screen of death
I put in some old ram 256mb DDR PC266 and works fine

where can i get my full specs and potentials?

1) could i upgrade bios to use my DDR400 ram?
2) what ram could i use?
3) I have 2 xp2500 CPU's, could i use these, are they any better?
4) The longer PCI slots, can i utilize these? I want to connect 4 - 6 sata drives, gig ethernet card and a sound card (no onboard sound)

when pc boots, i see 2 processors, in device manager i see only 1 (MPS Multiprocessor PC)
win xp pro sp2

any advise would be greatly appreciated, and patience also!!

Socket A processors are no longer produced. You may still be able to find new in box MP processors, but they will cost quite a few $$$.

Is there a BIOS version that will detect a single Athlon MP CPU? I'm using just one Athlon MP 2000+ Model 6 w/ASUS A7m266 mb w/Award Mod BIOS v6.0 & there's no option to enable the MP capable bit. The CPU is read as an Athlon XP 2000+.

It probably would, although the bios may recognize it as a XP2600+ with 512k cache, or it may recognize it as a Sempron with the latest bios if the mainboard is compatible with semprons.

If its under warranty from the distributor then tell them they better find a working one for you because the warranty is a contract. If they refuse then I don't know, litigate? I mean a warranty is supposed to guarantee the product against manufacturing defects so they have to replace it if it was a manufacturing defect and its under warranty. Tell them they shouldn't offer a warranty if they don't have replacements. Keep pressing them till they fold, don't let them walk on you. If they can't get one tell them to pay for you to update the server then, tell them they will have to pay for all the incompatible parts since they don't have a proper replacement. You are in the right here if its a problem thats covered by the warranty.

I have got a server running dual Athlon MP 2400+. Recently, one of the CPUs failed and we sent it to your distributor (VST in Hong Kong) for replacement / RMA. However, your distributor stated that stock is no longer available and offered us to replace it with Sempron products. I would like to seek for your assistance that within the warranty period, I would not be expected to switch platform, or give up the utilization of my dual Athlon MP server. Is there anything you would do for us in this case? Thanks.

I am also looking for a replacment AMD MP 2800+ cpu 2 infact as my goods got damaged in shipping from London to Capetown and the bloody insurance wont pay out. I have been searching hi and low on the net. They do everything else but my processor's. I havent been able to get much info or help off the AMD website itself either.

If anyone has a link of a good place where i can buy the cpu's from be it second hand please email me as I am desparate to get my server back up and running.

Or if you know of any other processors that i can use on my motherboard:

All Socket A processors have ben discontinued. Your best bet is to go for a low-end Opteron, but you will need to build a new system for that.

Check the following for overheating or perceived overheating:

- Is the heatsink correctly installed ?
--> Verify it is correctly installed.

- Is the heatsink filled with dust and crud ?
--> Clean with compressed air in a can.

- Is the heatsink fan operating ?
--> Replace defective fan with similar or better unit.

- Is the heatsink adequate for that application/CPU ?
--> Verify it meet the requirements for the CPU being used.
--> RETAIL heatsink? May require lapping and better TIM.

- Is thermal interface material used between heatsink and cpu ?
--> Verify it is used, and is applied according to the manufacturers guidelines.
--> Recommended PCM's, thermal pads from "AMD Thermal, Mechanical,and Chassis Cooling Design Guide #23794.PDF.

--> Verify airflow, add case fans if required.

- Is the Vcore set higher than specified by the manufacturer ?
--> Verify the Vcore is set to the manufacturers specification in the mainboards bios.

- Is the temperature read via the internal temperature diode. Is the tremperature read via the socket thermistor ?
--> Temperatures read at the diode can and will be higher than an external reading.

- Is the temperature sensor properly calibrated ?
--> Several boards have this problem, check manufacturers bios revision history for calibration fix.
--> Does the heatsink feel warm or HOT, if it's warm it could be a miscalibration error.

- Outside temperature high ?
--> If the external temperature is high, then the case fans will be drawing in hot air, especially during summer months. Remeber, when it's Winter in the Northern Hemi-sphere, it's Summer in the Southern Hemi-sphere & vice-versa.

need help! i have AMD 2400 MP's and the tempatures are abnormally high... ive been many different places, and i need some help. the idle temps are 62c and 59c full load they are around 70c i just put new sinks on and some artic silver 5, and i just ordered some copper shims to help with conductivity.(a side note... can you put thermal paste directly on the processor... if not do the shims really help that much?) so what exactly should i do... i should have more than adequate case cooling... help would be appriciated

I just started working at this Architectural company 3 months ago and we have AMD workstations which are rather tardy and occassionally freezing or shutung down, or something. We use heavy graphic applications like Revit, 3DStudio Max, AutoCAD and Photoshop and the processors are not helping. I have been in touch with our IT guys but they do not seem to know what they are doing or they are just swindling us with cheap equipment. Can anyone advise me on what upgrades or changes I can do to increase productivity? Oh yeah, my general specs are

Their are practically the same processor, your board is for single mode operation so I doubt there is a string in the bios that will specifically say it is an MP...It's a COSMETIC error...that is all..I wouldn't even worry about it.

Hi. If you are still waiting, they both run at 266Mhz but unfortunately both CPU's HAVE to be the same preferably a matched pair but certainly NOT different speeds i.e. 2xMP2600+, 2xMP2800+,2xMP2400+ etc and of course both MP although sometimes you can have modified XP's. I would suggest looking on ebay and purchasing either another MP2600+ or MP2800+ but carefully check part numbers as quoted on CPU's

Suggestions for CPU upgrades with 760MPX chipset

I have a Tiger S2466 (and I think the 2M version, the one that doesn't support 2800+ MPs) and used to run with two 2400+ MPs until both blew out. I tested both processors individually in another Tiger S2460 I have (that usually runs with two 2000+ MPs), so have concluded that both 2400+ MP processors are blown out. I realize that this does not in any way indicate that the S2466 is not damaged (I could not test the 2000+ MPs in the S2466 as these two systems are separated by a 5 hour drive).

I have a few questions:
1. Assuming the motherboard is still functional, and given that the S2466 uses the 760MPX chipset, is it possible for me to upgrade to Thoroughbred OR Barton based Athlon XP-M's that run on a 266MHz FSB?

1a. I can't boot up the motherboard to check whether or not I can set the clock multiplier, but I believe I can. (Does anyone believe otherwise?)

1b. Would a XP-M 2600+ Barton be more efficient (in terms of integer/fpu calculations) tha na XP 2600+ Barton, or is the difference only the fact that the XP-M processor can operate with a lower core voltage? I'm not really interested in overclocking here.

2. Can I return those 2400+ MPs for a replacement? It hasn't been 3 years yet, but I don't know if the warranty covers this. AFAIK, the desktop stopped booting one day in February, and I've had to use puny 10.4" laptop to complete my spring term of college.

I recommend 2500+...
The only difference is default speed.
2500+ is 11X166 and 2600+ is 11.5X166.

I have been looking at athlon MP options and I have seen that XPM2500s and XPM2600s are still available for around 120 euros ($150).

Is this price reasonable and what is the difference between the two?

Edit: they are at $89 and $95 at newegg so the price looks a little steep.

OSA244BOX stepping

I've been trying unsuccessfully to get some consistent, correct information about what the stepping is for the OSA244BOX model. I'd like to be sure that if I purchase multiple CPUs from different vendors the processors will share the same stepping. Specifically I mean buying OSA244BOX processors.

I'm beginning to believe the OSA244BOX is a OSA244CEP5AL with a heat sink and fan but haven't confirmed it yet. I read another posting from "OrangesAway May 3 2005, 06:45 PM" that said "The revisions are now encoded in the Processor in a Box part numbers. See the Opteron Processor Quick Reference Guide" but I didn't find this to be true.

I'd also like to know how to identify stepping information for boxed processors in general.

Can anyone at AMD make a definitive comment about this?
