I'm planning on building a new system in April and would like some feedback please. I am planning on building with a Gigi GA-MA790GPT-UD3H and 2 Samsung F1 RAID Class 500GB drives. I plan on leaving the SATA Controller in the BIOS at the default of Native IDE and using Ubuntu amd64 Alternate Install from and ISO burn and following the instructions https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Installation/SoftwareRAID to set up a Software RAID 1 Array.
Does anyone have prior experience with this type of Linux RAID Array type?
I'm trying to stay away from 'fake-raid' on the mobo and really hate to get a cheap controller card if this will work out OK.
I have a Foxcon MoBo with a 3800 Sempron CPU. I would like to try installing a Distro from DVDs - to make it easy for me. I have read about Debian, Mandrake, and Red Hat with their ready made discs. Right now that would be easier for me than burning a downloaded ISO. I am asking for recommendations on an easy Distro to get and use. I am a bit confused about the listings for AMD64 which say they also can handle 32 bit AMD chips. Other places they say to only get a 32 bit version. What do I need? And it IS easy for me to upgrade to and AMD 64 X2 or some such as well if it makes things easier.
TIA mikef [retired HP computer engineer who doesn't know everything]

Fglrx graphics driver -- How to enforce monitor refresh rate?

Hi,

Short version: How do you tell the fglrx 8.65 driver to enforce given horizontal and (more importantly) vertical frequencies on a monitor without DDC/EDID information?

Long version:
Recently I bought a new system with an AMD 785G chipset with integrated graphics. I installed the newest fglrx drivers for my distribution (Ubuntu 8.10), which happens to be the fglrx 8.65 version. I had to do this since the old drivers did not support the HD 4200 graphics core.

However, I still have a somewhat old CRT monitor which seems to not support DDC/EDID information. Actually it's not that old -- an 21" Dell P1130, year 2002 or something -- so I guess it should actually support EDID, but I never managed to get it working.

And I never had to bother too much about that, because on all my previous cards, I just had to tell X.org the refresh rate I want to use, with something like

Section "Monitor"
Identifier "Dell P1130"
Option "DPMS"
HorizSync 30-130
VertRefresh 50-160
EndSection

in the xorg.conf file. These are the specs of my monitor according to its datasheet, and they have always worked correctly, giving me an 85 Hz refresh rate at 1600x1200, which is the maximum the monitor supports at that resolution.

However, the new fglrx driver seems to completely ignore these settings, relying completely on the EDID information. Since there is no EDID data, the driver falls back to a "failsafe" 60 Hz default. This should be OK for an increasing number of users, since all new monitors support EDID, but there are still a lot of users like me using CRT monitors, who are extremely unhappy with a 60 Hz refresh rate.

So does anyone know how I could force the driver to use a specific refresh rate?

Thanks for any advices!

Mike

When will the K10 core family be fully supported in the Linux Kernel? Even if it's just for temperature monitoring. The K10 has been out there for a while, but it still won't show up in the Linux Kernel. There is some vague patch to build your own k10temp module, but this won't give me sufficient information as the k8temp module did on previous processors.

I've got kernel version 2.6.31 running at the moment (in combination with a X2 7750+ BE (K10 Kuma)). Since this version there have been some changes to the hardware monitoring section. Because of this I'm unable to load the it87 module. This module was my only source of information on pc-health. Now I don't have any clue what temperature the cpu is, or what the voltages are doing.

So the question is: will there be full support for the K10 core in the Linux kernel? And if yes, when will it happen?

It has a AMD Athlon XP 3200+ (I think 2.2 Ghz), with 434.4 MiB of memory... I'm not sure if that is 32 or 64 bit.

The other computer is a cheap laptop I just bought at Wal-Mart. It is a Acer Aspire 5515 and has a AMD Athlon Processor 2650e (I think 1.6 Ghz) in it. It also has 2.7 GiB of memory. Again is this a 32 or 64 bit capable system??

Thanks to all of you for the help, I'm sorry for the newbie questions!!

I'm planning my first build and have spent a lot of time researching all aspects to include open source options. I have a few questions but I'm still on a learning curve with some of the abbreviations when it comes to OS and other software; therefore I will not take offence if you explain things real simple.
I've noticed some users have trouble with some ATI drivers, it seems that every 6 months if they update to the latest version of Ubuntu/Linux they have to 'reload' or 'update drivers' am I understanding this correctly?
I am planning on using a Gigabyte GA-MA790GP-UD4H mother board. This will mean AMD 790GX north bridge
AMD 750 south bridge
ATI Radeon HD3300 [integrated]
AMD Phenom II X3 720 cpu 45nm socket AM3 [my choice]
AMD OverDrive
Gigabyte Easytune6
Windows XP Pro 32-bit
My question [about the above] is has anyone had trouble with Ubuntu 8.10 when dealing with these components/chipsets/features.
One last question reguarding my OS install order onto a 640 or 750 GB WD Caviar Black SATAII HDD:
I am planning on installing XP Pro 32-bit first then Ubuntu/GRUB next; should I format the entire drive with XP then resize and partition with the Ubuntu/GRUB instalation or should I partion with the XP and only format it's share of the drive?
Or worse case I still do not know what I'm talking about Which is common with us newbie's Thank you for you time and response JLP

Hello,

we are considering to buy a system with an AMD Opteron 2384 processor. We want to conduct some experiments with dynamic voltage frequency scaling (DVFS).

It seems the chips supports DVFS per core, so one core can be running at frequency X and the other core can do it at frequency Y. However, we are not sure how to access all the actuators to change frequency/voltage.

Is cpufreq from Linux kernel supporting this? I could only find support for K8 microarchitectures and a patch to read the temperatures for K10 microarchitecture (e.g., Opteron 2384). However, we are not sure whether is it possible to perform DVFS for K10 microarchitecture using cpufreq.

Does anyone know anything about this? Any plans to support K10 in cpufreq?

Thanks in advance,
Victor

first off, thank you sooooo much for adding support for my card. i had low expectations from all the dead ends the older drivers lead me to, so i was more then surprised when *poof* my hardware was detected after installing catalyst 9.2 on ubuntu 8.10.

games now play awesomely. i can now play games that simply do not work with the open source drivers. sadly not everything worked out as well

1.) xv seems broken with my card. i have done allot of tests and tweaking in xorg.conf, but i get the same or worse results. here are two different umbrella symptoms that i get with every thing i have tried:

with default settings:
videos play only as black screens. moving the video player around the screen or changing between fullscreen and window will show one incomplete frame of video and then turn back again. the "test" button gstreamer-properties shows the test window (gargled, colors are off) for a second then disappears with the button to stop the test still there and waiting.

settings from http://forum.compiz-fusion.org/showthread.php?t=6794 and similar configs:
loading any video in any player restarts x(like pressing Ctrl+Alt+Backspace). i dont know how to backtrace the error, sorry. gstreamer-properties either shows a garbled screen(stays visable) or crashes x like the video players do.

fglrxinfo

<begin quote>display: :0.0 screen: 0
OpenGL vendor string: ATI Technologies Inc.
OpenGL renderer string: RADEON 9700 PRO
OpenGL version string: 2.1.8494 Release</end quote>

both xdpyinfo and xvinfo seem to be showing everything it should. i can give the results if helpful.

i dont know if it is related, but AIGLX shows many warnings like this:

<begin quote>(WW) AIGLX: 3D driver claims to not support visual 0xXX</end quote>

even when it is disabled.

2.) the next issue is with resolution. i set custom resolutions with aticonfig, and fglrx seems to ignore them, using the settings it got from probing the monitor. there doesnt seem to be many options for tweaking, so im stuck.

3.) lastly, as you can see from the xorg logs below, the tv-out portion of my card is still not supported, though i could care less about it at this point in time. here is the lshw:

lshw -C display

<begin quote>*-display:0
description: VGA compatible controller
product: Radeon R300 ND [Radeon 9700 Pro]
vendor: ATI Technologies Inc
physical id: 0
bus info: pci@0000:01:00.0
version: 00
width: 32 bits
clock: 66MHz
capabilities: agp agp-2.0 pm bus_master cap_list
configuration: driver=fglrx_pci latency=255 mingnt=8 module=fglrx
*-display:1 UNCLAIMED
description: Display controller
product: Radeon R300 [Radeon 9700 Pro] (Secondary)
vendor: ATI Technologies Inc
physical id: 0.1
bus info: pci@0000:01:00.1
version: 00
width: 32 bits
clock: 66MHz
capabilities: pm cap_list
configuration: latency=32 mingnt=8 </end quote>

sniped xorg logs, past then present:

(this is from repository driver, errors were the same)

<begin quote>(II) Loading /usr/lib/xorg/modules/drivers//fglrx_drv.so
(II) Module fglrx: vendor="FireGL -
I built my own system (specs below). From searching the forums, it seems Linux has problems with SATA controllers. I am trying to install on a SATA hard drive from a SATA DVD drive. The computer has a chipset RAID/AHCI controller. Windows XP (32-bit) installed without a hitch.

Using EIDE/PATA DVD drive:

Originally (when built), I had an EIDE/PATA DVD drive. Slackware 12.0 DVDs (I have 2 identical) booted without BIOS changes, saw the drives, and partitioned the drives. When beginning install, Slackware could not read off the DVDs and said they were corrupt. They are not -- DVDs are known good and install on many other computers.

For kicks, I tried various Linux CDs I have, including Sabayon + multiple Knoppixes (which I'm not interested in installing), some 2.6 kernel, some 2.4, but all had the same problem, or would not see the hard drives at all. I was too busy to troubleshoot this anymore after the first 2 weeks and gave up for a while.

Using SATA DVD drive:

I installed a SATA DVD drive. Slackware 12.0 had the same problem as before. I tried every combination of BIOS setting possible for peripheral devices (even ones that I knew would not boot the Windows I already have installed) -- nothing works. It only saw the drives once (would partition but wouldn't install). It will not see the drives now regardless of BIOS settings. I know I tried every possible combination multiple times because I wrote them down.

The motherboard manual recommends SATA optical drives be plugged into the 5th or 6th slot (it is in the 5th, 04), and that "SATA Port 4/5 Type" be set to IDE. Currently it is, but again, I tried every possible combo.

Summary

The only thing FDISK can see is (with right BIOS settings), ironically, the DVD drive! (It recognizes it both as "/dev/sdc" and "/dev/hdc".)

There are not seperate Slackware ISOs for x86 and x64, so am I correct to assume the 12.0 Install DVD supports both?

Does anyone know what I need to do to get Slackware to install? I strongly prefer Slackware -- it's designed very no-nonsense, and the install prompting mode options are superior.

I've read here several people have better luck with Ubuntu. I would rather install Slackware, if I can. Has anyone seen improvement with 12.1 or 12.2? Or strongly recommend another distro if not?

Hardware:

GIGABYTE GA-MA74GM-S2H motherboard

South Bridge: AMD SB700

AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 5200+ 2.71 GHz

2 Seagate Baraccuda 7200.10 SATA II hard drives (300 + 500 GB)

1 Samsung WriteMaster SATA DVD-RW drive

1 floppy drive

ATI Radeon 2100 Graphics

4GB (2x2) DDR2-800 RAM
