I am currently running Windows 7, despite being a die-hard Linux user. The reason is that my new laptop (HP dv6z) has been configured (when I bought it online via HP) with a dedicated AMD graphics card AND an integrated AMD card / processor.

I am currently using Windows as I heard that there wasn't much support for using dual graphic cards on Linux-based distribution, however I've also read the opposite when it comes to using AMD's proprietary drivers.

So, I'd love a straight answer, if possible. Does the AMD Catalyst Driver support dual-graphic cards that are NOT Intel/AMD but rather AMD/AMD? If so, does it support automatic switching or will I need to open up the terminal and switch which cards that X.Org uses? (I'm comfortable doing this as well).

I already checked, both my cards are listed as supported, so no need to ask me that

Thank you,

Josh

P.S. I asked on the Ubuntu (I use Ubuntu-derived distributions, not specifically Ubuntu) forums, they were absolutely useless when asked.

Hi.

For some technical reasons we decide to get a ati radeon 5450 PCI interface, not a PCI-e, is the old one 5v low profile.

We are working with a tiny linux distribution(puppy and slitaz) and we are doing some programs for this distros that will run on a neoware machine on usb.

The main goal is to connect those devices to TV 32"+ over HDMI, this was one of the reason to purchase a video card with HDMI output, the neoware doesn't have PCI-e slots, just PCI, we don't want to use a VGA converter.

Now, puppy works, we tweak the TV and the xorg settings and we have puppy displaying the desktop in the whole screen.

But is not using the radeon driver, we want to know if exist a driver for this card for linux?

At ATI they just give us PCI-e not PCI.

The other tiny distro slitaz works but, once u try open any menu, program, etc the font size get some bigger that is not possible wot work with.

puppy 5.x, slitaz 3.x, this week we will try slitaz latest 4.0, thanks!!!

The problem is that the latest versions of Linux distros, Ubuntu 11.10 or Mint 12, will not install on the laptop, can't even get the Live CD to start in most cases. It produces a blank screen during install. It seems to me that the Linux AMD video drivers don't support the internal GPU of the Llano. Any idea what's going on?

I recently got a mini-ITX motherboard to use as a HTPC. The reviews for the board said it had awesome 720p/1080p rendering because of the onboard ATI Radeon HD 6310 graphics.

The reviewers must all have been running windows. I was hoping to use Linux for the HTPC so I could also use it for my torrent server and NAS. Currently I've settled with Linux Mint 11 (Ubuntu 11.04) and the fglrx driver from the repository. With this setup I'm getting lots of stuttering on 720p x264 and I get about 1 frame every second or two on 1080p x264.

Does anyone here use the proprietary driver or have the 6310? Is Linux a good choice as far as graphics go, I know it will fulfill my other needs perfectly? I am open to new distrbutions and am willing to try exparimental drivers.

Here's a fix for owners of any AMD-based PCs out there who installed Ubuntu/Debian/Mint Linux, and are getting the REALLY annoying "shpchp Cannot reserve MMIO region" message flash by on bootup:

1. Open up a terminal, and sudo to root. ("sudo su - ")

2. Go into /etc/modprobe.d/ (will show up as "/etc/modprobe.d$" in your terminal)

3. Create a new file in that directory, calling it anything you want (I called my file "blacklist-shpchp"), and put the following entry into it:

blacklist shpchp

4. That's it. Save changes and reboot.

Problem solved! No more "shpcph Cannot reserve MMIO region" message, and your system will boot a bit faster.

What this fix does is prevent the PCI Hotplug module from loading. Not really needed. Unless you *really* need to hotplug and unplug PCI cards.

This fix gets rid of the issue entirely.

Just a comment here.

I finally got around to using Ubuntu again after installing my new hardware, and I forgot how much fun it can be to get everything working again. The ATI proprietary driver for my graphics card completely disappeared and my secondary hard drive refused to mount. In both cases though, Google was certainly my friend. Once I found the correct terminal commands to use, the ATI driver was actually easier to install compared to how it used to be in the "good old days". Then a quick edit of fstab got the hard drive mounted too. Good times.

For me at least, Ubuntu stirs emotions that cannot be matched by any modern version of Windows. Despair when hardware won't work followed by euphoria when it finally does.

Now, I believe I'll replace my Lucid Lynx 10.04 and give Natty Narwhal 11.04 a try just to see what that is all about. They say Gnome is dead - long live Unity. That, plus I'm up for another challenge.

Cheers.

I was reading and in some notes i read that those drivers suppose to come with Powerexpress technology =/ and i can't really switch my adapters.

After installing drivers ati catalyst only detects my weaker card (4250) and i don't really want to use it i prefer my 5470 dedicated gpu.

Is there anyway to fix this problem? i don't care disabling the 4250 i just wanna use my 5470 to play some cool linux games !! and have better performance, doesn't matter if i can't switch back to 4250.

Any help will be appreciated thanx =)!!!

I'm Running HP dv6 laptop with Amd phenom II x3 p820 with the 880 g chip.

PS: <3 <3 <3 AMD! <3 <3 <3

I AM Disappointed. I have two 5XXX video cards. I have newer hardware with dual core processors, your processors. Phenom II X2 555 black edition, MSI 785gtm-e45 Mother boards that work great. They have on board video that doesn't work with your Linux drivers. I think the latest driver is 10.4 available for Linux? MY QUESTION IS; Why wont you fix video playback in Linux? I mean all Linux distros. Even the distros you claim to support all have video playback and compatibility issues.
You stand to lose all the customer base you built within the Linux community. I am a paying customer. We are all paying. I paid you for video cards that you said would play back video, well, in Linux based systems, on LCD monitors. What I got from your vendors and you, was a bad set of video cards that can't play back video without constant tearing and shearing. If it was just my cards I would not be writing this. It's not just one card or just my cards, It's everyone's cards. Everything I read so far ends up with you, AMD/ATI, wiping your hands of any responsibility for the products you sell to the public. While we all scurry around trying to get this garbage to work for you. Your behavior in this matter is similar to Microsoft or a high-school student who just got caught smoking on school grounds. "It wasn't me! We didn't do anything wrong!" as the kid stands in front of his teacher with a cigarette in his mouth. Well you did do something wrong. You sold all of us a product you knew wouldn't work the way you advertised it would. You conned us all. I wont buy another video card from you or your vendors. Meanwhile were all stuck making excuses for you. No longer. You know what the one, really cool thing about this situation is? I don't need you for anything. There are other people who sell this junk to, LOL. You have no control in this situation. All you can do now is try to recover whatever dignity you had while we all buy something else. Smoke that.
