So, earlier this week, AMD informed my computer that an update was available. This update was AMD 12.6. 

I downloaded and updated it to 12.6 but soon after, found that there was an annoying problem. Unlike any of the previous updates, that stupid overscan issue popped up again. For some reason, whenever I boot/re-boot my computer, the desktop shows up as not being overscanned (ie...with that black border around it or the whole screen not being utilized, however you want to put it). Once i boot my computer, this happens and its odd that after about 5 minutes or so, it decides that it wants to change back to the fullscreen mode by itself. Its almost as if the update is "laggy", it boots up, then after 5-6 minutes, realizes that its supposed to be in full screen overscanned mode, then changes, regardless of whether or not im doing anything on my computer. 

I've gone into the CCC and checked, and the overscan bar is where it's supposed to be. It's not entirely annoying considering it does eventually change back to the way it's supposed to be, but the annoying factor comes with me having to re-arrange my icons and a couple of my startup windows (like AIM) whenever it boots up. 

I was wondering if anyone had any idea why it was doing this, as someone else contacted me about a question I posted in a different forum saying that they had the exact same problem and didn't have the problem until this last 12.6 update. 

*(usually what happens when i update the AMD is that it will be downloading, half way through it will make my icons huge and change the resolution, and then a couple seconds later it will change back and the update is complete. This time it was different as it changed the icons and resolutions to be big, but when it changed back, it changed to being bordered, (like so many of us have had previous problems with at somepoint).*

How far back do you think I could go and still have Ethernet capabilities for networking to a cable modem?

I'd probably load it with windows 98 or 3.1 for the nostalgia part but dual boot with some basic linux distro so it would have at least some modern capabilities. I'd probably have to look for stuff on ebay or thrift stores...too bad there's no such thing as a PC graveyard.

Most of the parts pictured are still being used today, but the hard drive died a few years ago. Socket 754 with an Athlon +3200 64-bit and 9600XT still running well!

Below is from a PNY tech working with me to diagnose a freeze up.

"I have gone through the event logs, crash dump files that you have sent to me and I pointed out that you sere getting fatal errors with the AMD northbridge on the mainboard, crash dump files show that the crash was caused by the file HAL.dll. HAL is the Hardware Abstract Layer and is a main component of Windows which handles the hardware resource allocation for programs that need access to those resources.

This is allows the capability to run multiple applications at once. The northbridge handles communication between the CPU, expansion buses(such as PCIE, PCI, AGP), and the such. The HAL and northbridge are major components that do need to be address as the graphics card and other components rely on these in order to operate properly. It is advisable to have your computer looked to make sure these are issues are addressed as this can result in further problems with your overall system if not taken care of."

I am running Oracle VirtualBox (Ver 4.1.20) - and attempting to run Win 8 (either 32 or 64bit). I setup the base image properties O/K, but the Win 8 install fails and the error seems to be related to my laptop not having virtualization enabled in the BIOS.

I had no problems running Win 8 (32bit) as a guest using VirtualBox on my old HP Pavillion 6930p with Windows 7 Enterprise and 8GB RAM.

Again - thanks for your help - if someone could help with this it would be really appreciated. I can't find any reference to 'vitrualization' (or similar) in the BIOS utility at all.

My current system is a socket 939 board...I've been kicking it along, and it's really fine, but I don't have half the drivers I need for Windows 7, etc.

My brother is giving me his slightly newer AM2 system. It's currently got an Athlon 64 3200+ processor, which isn't an upgrade from the dual core Opteron that I have.

However, it does have a little upgradeability. I was wondering--what is the best processor I can put in this thing? The board is a Biostar Tforce4 series. I have to check into BIOS updates and things like that, but if I can score a cheap CPU with this system, it will be nice.

Am I looking at AM2+ processors?

First one off the rank is a socket 754 processor that has been used for thermal testing (the groove in the heat-spreader).

The heat-spreader is smaller than normal lidded 754 processors

Around the outside edge are landing pads that appeared to have been used as there is contact wear points on each

The only marking on the processor is the package number 27880 which suggest it was made late 2003 or early 2004

I am working towards testing it, but I am trying to get as much information before I go that step.
Also I have to repair one of the missing pins

The Asus MoBo I was asking about was for my partner, this one is for me !

I know I'm asking the impossible, but, I have the chance of a mini pc based on the E-350 APU or a midi tower based on the Intel Q6600.

All I use a pc for is web surfing, listening to music, youtube and some basic video/audio conversion. I don't play games I use my Xbox360 for that.

I would like to stay with AMD as I have never had problems with them - but the Intel is a quad core - but then I don't do anything that need it..........aahhh.

So what do you guys think, passing the buck big stile.

Can some one please confirm that I can use BOTH the on board video (HD 4250) and an ATI HD4670 video card together on the ASUS M5A88-M EVO (880G/SB850 chipset) motherboard as I need to drive 3 monitors off this system 2 VGA and 1 DVI-D.

AMD is changing their design philosophy, and Vishera will truly show if they are on the right track or not. The Piledriver cores in Vishera should not only retain the improved power characteristics that were displayed in Trinity, but it should also improve per-clock performance as well as threading efficiency. Details are scarce on what exactly AMD has done to Vishera, but there are plenty of details on what was achieved with Trinity. L2 and L3 cache sizes have not changed as compared to the original Bulldozer, but I would expect a lot of work to be done on the L1 data and instruction caches, the four wide decoders should get a significant boost, and other smaller structures will either be expanded (like the TLBs) or simply improved (pre-fetch and prediction).

Im owner of old amd x2 4600+ procesor, today is very hot day around. 95°F i realise my computer work around 7-15hour average per day since years, i dont know exacly how old this procesor is, but probably around 4-5 years old and it still work! even i use my computer a lot very day. Thank you for your awesome product, in future i plan to buy next procesor form your company because of quality and durability.

I bought a C270 LOGITECH webcam for a friend, he owns a well performing COMPAQ desktop PC / Windows XP, equipped with a RADEON 9200 graphic card. Each time I try to use the webcam with any application the PC reboots.
With my ASUS desktop PC / Windows XP, my C300 Logitech webcam works perfectly, so do my friend's C270 webcam.
With my friend's desktop PC both webcams cause the same problem.
I contacted the LOGITECH support team who finally told me that the problem comes from the RADEON 9200 graphic card or from the COMPAQ motherboard ...

So, what can I do for the RADEON 9200 graphic card in order to not reboot the PC when I try to use the webcam ?

(I already updated everything suggested by LOGITECH, I reinstalled the LOGITECH drivers. I was also said that the graphic card drivers are up to date.)
