I'm a C++ Software Developer and my question is related to compatibility of AMD and Intel CPUs when 'mfence' instruction is used in an application designed and implemented for Intel CPUs in the first place.

I've read that some older AMD CPUs do not support that instruction. Is that correct?

Could you provide as much as possible information on which AMD CPUs did not support 'mfence' instruction? How many years ago was it?

Are there any references I could look at on AMD web-site, like links to docs, C++ or ASM examples?

Could you provide some tips for implementing programming solutions on older AMD CPUs when 'mfence' instruction is not supported.

Best regards,

I am a first time builder. I built my system with ab AMD FX 4170 quad processor. I am concerned that my system is not running as fast/smooth as I hoped it would. So am trying to cover my bases and make sure each component is working properly.

my motherboard program and windows 7 evaluation of my CPU both show it never going much above 4 Ghz. I wasn't for sure if this was saying per core and everything was fine, or if it meant total, and it is only running at about 25% of the speed it should be (4x4.2=16.8ghz)

My other concern is that my ASRock 970 extreme am3+ motherboard is 8-core compatible, and I got wondering if that would make the quad core not run as efficiently?

Also, how can I check to make sure my power supply is pushing enough to each component? (its a corsair builder 430w)

Finally, I also have 2x4gb gskills ram and an AMD Radeon HD 6850. do any of these components stand out to you as a bottleneck in my system that I could upgrade w/o to much expense?

Ok.. So a few months ago I purchased a bunch of A6-3670's (NOT the K / unlocked version) and some Asus F1A55-M LE boards.

They would intermittently freeze.

As to not delay, I bought some new processors and shelved the A6 3670 (NOT the K / unlocked version) - comps ran fine and went on their way to happy homes.

My issue:
I have a box full of brand new A6 3670's and need a compatible motherboard. Easy right? Buy an FM1 motherboard... BUT Asus does not list this processor under the support list for ANY motherboards (we are not interested in any other brand, we can argue about that later).

Even still, I Google the chip and get only the K version. No confirmed motherboard works?

Is this chip recalled?

Is it a secret?

Do I soley account for the global sales of the A6 3670 chipset?

I called both AMD and Asus tech support (first time ever in a 10 year career) with some amusing responses, but no help.

Anyone else own this chip? That will be a good start. As for what to do... I don't know.

Thank you all in advance... Let the conspiracy be brought to light!!!! - Just kidding AMD, I am huge fan - Low latency FTW... Some us still pay attention.

I am looking into replacing an aged desktop with a new Dell Laptop capable of handling large assemblies in Solidworks 2012. I have looked at a couple combos to try and maximize performance and minimize cost. What I have noticed is that Dell is obnoxiously restrictive on what they allow you to customize with, here are the two leaders of the pack so far:

1) Dell Precision M6600 Workstation $3,379
Intel Core i7-2760 2.4 Ghz 6M cache (only processor shown available)
NVIDIA Quadro 4000M 2 GB GDDR5 (SolidWorks Approved)
16 GB DDR3-1600MHz
750 GB 7200 RPM Hard Drive

2) Alienware M17x $2,624
Intel Core i7-3820 up to 3.7 Ghz 8M cache
2 Gb GDDR5 AMD Radeon HD 7970M
24GB Dual Channel DDR3 1600 MHz
500GB 7200 RPM with 32GB mSATA caching SSD

The main deterrent that I can see for the Alienware is the fact that the AMD Radeon 7970M is not listed as a certified SolidWorks card, they primarily recommend Quadro cards or FirePro but this seems to be because that is all they have tested (from what I read). From the benchmark data I have seen on the two GPUs it looks like the 7970M blows the Quadro out of the water (I think these numbers come from Gaming performance though). It just seems that you can get so much more computer for the price compared to the M6600.

From my research I have come to find that the priorities of components should be Processor, RAM, Hard Drive, GPU, if this is the case then the M18x is head over heels better than the M6600. Does anyone have experience running SolidWorks with large assemblies on the AMD Radeon 7970M?

hi all, my problems its that i bought a phenom in amazon USA and get it shpped to my country, first month processor was working very wall, the my compurer suddensly stops showing display images, i first thought it was my nvidia card fault so shut the computer and check cable and turn on and everything went back to normal....

after that the computer did tha same sometimes, but after shut down always went to normal, but then one day my screnn got frozen and then i just shut down and think ***** windows 7, after booting in the windows log on screen the computer did the same but this time show me blue screen but i could not read it cos suddenly the display turn, off........

after that my computer never turn on again, it was like locked, i could not even enter to the bios screen, try everything, change ram, motherboard, PSU, video card, and nothing happend, so i juts bought and amd sempron 145 and it was like magic my compurter turn on and work prefectly.... after a few days just to try i change again my semprom with the bad phenom and to surprise me my computer turned on, but then again in log on screen it just got frozen then it never turn on again.....

i am using the sempron but i want to know it you think that somehow i just damage my phenom(it does not have any physical damage, it looks like i took it out of the box), but the sempron its to slow to encoding videos and i need to encode videos fast, so if i damage my processor, can i still send it to amd for warranty???? or i will need to buy a new one cos its my fault the processor got damage???............

thanks for thaking your time reading my long post

?I'm having trouble trying to keep my new AMD 8150 machine within its temperature spec. (61° C). These are the results even after ditching the stock heatsink and fan for a Cooler Master Hyper 212EVO. When I run Prime95 at small FFTs with the default bios settings (x18 on the multiplier, and CPUvoltage at 1.2875v.) the temp. goes straight through 60° heading to 70° and from there to meltdown without pause in less than 20 seconds. When I run with the multiplier at x17.5, and the voltage above 1.1875v., but less than the normal setting the temperature will plateau at around 57°, and then slowly creep up to 61° in about 15 minutes. When the temperature exceeds 61° it rapidly shoots towards 70° where I end the test. With the multiplier set to x17, and the CPU voltage set at 1.1875 I've been able to run Prime95 for over 2 hours with the temperature never going over 59° , and by the looks of it, it would most likely survive a 24 hour run. I don't get any errors during the tests, just high temprature. Room temperature when I tested was about 22°C, and the CPU idle temperature was 31°. I'm running this on a Gigabyte 990XA-UD3 (most recent F10 bios) with 16GB Corsair Vengeance
DDR3 1600 memory. My Lian Li case is being ventilated with two fans in the top , one in the front, and one in the back. I'm also using Antec Formula 6 thermal compound. Other bios settings are as follows:

NB Freq. x11 2200Mhz
Core Boost Disabled
CPU Host Clock 200Mhz
HT Link Width 16bit
HT Link freq. x11 2200Mhz
Memory Clock x8.0 1600Mh
CPU PLL voltage normal 2.5v
DRAM voltage normal 1.5v
DDR VTT voltage normal .75v
NB voltage normal 1.1v
HT Link voltage normal 1.2v
NB/PCIe/PLL voltage normal 1.8
CPU NB VID normal

?Have I got a bum chip? I'd really like to be able to run it at it's rated settings. Would water cooling really make that big a difference?

Hi,

I hope this is the appropriate section to ask this question. I have a Dell Optiplex 580 that has been giving me some BSOD problems for awhile. Because I cannot find any issues with the disk, memory, or motherboard (not saying their aren't, just haven't isolated them if there are), I was wondering if I might have some out-of-date drivers. I am not sure if the AMD site has a section or tool for checking them out, so I thought I would ask here. I have been to Dell's site for downloads, but I know for a fact that not all of their "most recent" drivers are the most recent.

I've made a quick list of my system specs, as well as all the drivers that I either know or think are AMD. If someone could let me know if I need more updates, please let me know.

Dell Optiplex 580
Manufacture Date: 12/29/2010
Operating System: Windows 7 Professional
System Type: 64-bit Operating System
Processor: 2x AMD Phenom II X2 B55 Processor
Memory: 4GB, Non-ECC, 1333MHz DDR3 (2x2GB)
BIOS: Version A05
Hard Disk: 250GB SATA 3.0BG/s and 8MB Data Burst Cache
Display Adapters: 256MB ATI Raedeon HD 3450
DVD/CD-ROM Drives: DVD+/-RW 16x
Network Adapters: Broadcom NetXtreme 57xx Gigabit Controller
Sound/Video/Game Controllers: Realtek High Definition Audio

amdiox64.sys: v. 1.0.0.15 built by: WinDDK
amdsata.sys: v. 1.2.001.197 built by: WinDDK
amdxata.sys: v. 1.2.001.197 built by: WinDDK
AODDriver2.sys: v. 4.0 built by: WinDDK
atikmdag.sys: v. 8.01.01.1223
atikmpag.sys: v. 8.14.01.6248
AtiPcie.sys: v. 1.3.2.54 built by: WinDDK
dump_amdsata.sys: v. unknown
dump_diskdump.sys: v. unknown
dump_dumpfve.sys: v. unknown

Thanks!
jmt83

Hi,
I was wondering if anyone has had experience migrating an AMD controlled RAID array between motherboards. I just had some of my components die, and I figured it would be time to move to new components for cost reasons. I was hoping to buy a refurbished Asus Crosshair III to replace my Foxconn A79-AS board. Both are 790fx sb750, but the Asus is AM3 and DDR3. I cant move to an 890 or 990 chipset because I have about 5tb of data and nobody I know can accommodate that bulk for the time it would take to get my new build going. Can I change over with the RAID intact? Will it be a smooth transition?

Thanks for the help

My system is already water cooled but I can't find an aftermarket cooling block made specifically for this card. There are universal blocks but that is a last ditch option as it does nothing for the RAM and other chipsets.

Is there a Radeon equivalent or is the FirePro hardware specific? If they are close I can use that platform for some tweaking to get a good fit. It's not like the card is burning up it could just use some cooling for longevity and pushing it to the limits.

Thanks

Michael

I have a ASUS F1A75-V Pro Motherboard with a A8-3870K APU with 8GB memory running Windows 7 64 bit and the onboard graphics have been nothing but a boat load of trouble. I bought this combination because I thought it would be the simplest as well as the least expensive way to get a reasonably fast system with decent graphics performance. - How wrong I was....

I'm not into gaming but I do, do some SolidWorks (actually Alibre) work and on occasion use PhotoShop but nothing extremely graphics intensive. I also use a simple milling machine simulator program.

PhotoShop works okay but Alibre runs very slow and the simulator program will not start at all and freezes the system and I have to go into the Task Manager (ctrl-alt-del) and end the program there to get control of the desktop back.

Have any of you guys/gals had a similar problem with this type of processor/motherboard combination?

I'm not opposed to getting an add on graphics card (Nvidia probably) but then that would defeat the purpose of having bought the APU/motherboard combo I have. Luckily I bought the components through Amazon so returning them and starting over wouldn't be a big problem.

What would you guys suggest? Another motherboard or another CPU/motherboard combo?

Thanks in advance for your comments.

PS: I did speak to AMD's fine support staff and they suspected that I received a defective APU so a replacement is on the way - maybe that will fix the problem but I have a sinking feeling that it will not.

The ASUS support staff was totally useless (calling them "support" is well, a misuse of the word support) - The 2 guys I spoke to couldn't even answer simple BIOS questions and said they would have to refer me to "Level 2" support. Both said I would get a call back that same day - 2 & 3 days ago - and still no call.

I am asking about (1) AMD Phenom II X4 975 Black Edition Deneb 3.6GHz Socket AM3 125W Quad-Core Desktop Processor HDZ975FBGMBOX and (2) the AMD Phenom II X4 980 Black Edition Deneb 3.7GHz Socket AM3 125W Quad-Core Desktop Processor HDZ980FBK4DGM. With a bios change to the F5I bios, is it safe to make the assumption that these CPU's will work on the motherboard considering that 20 other Deneb family CPU's are supported. Can you please confirm or discourage the use of these two processors with my Gigabyte motherboard.

Or Is it foolish to prolong the life of my old board with DDR2 memory? Should I be thinking new board with DDR3 RAM and AMD Fx cpu?

Thank you.

Todd STewart

I have a Sapphire HD 5770 128 bit 850 core clock,4800 Mhz effective mem clock.Looking at the HD 6870 256 bit 900 core clock but only 4200 Mhz mem clock.Budget is around $170.00.Or would x fireing 5770 2x8 be a good option?Or is there a better solution than these.I'm wanting to get into some serious gaming and the single 5770 is decent but i know there's a better card out there.I'm running a Phenom IIx4 975 3.6 Ghz on an ASRock 970 Extreme 4 with Win 7 pro and 8 gig's of crucial DDR3 1333 Mhz witch oc's pretty good and 300 Gb WD Velociraptor and an Ultra LSP750 in Antec's 902 v3 case.Thanks.

Hi.

I've looked around the web but haven't been able to find it, so does anyone know the size of the heat spreader of the FX chips are they bigger then the x6's or ?.

Since they seem to run fairly hot under full load i'm guessing you need a heatsink that has a big enough base to cover the whole of the spreader to get the heat away not just the centre area.

The above is what i've red around forums, seem a few are having heat problems & not even O.C ed. I'm not having a go at them it's just what's around, if you have one next time you've got it apart measure it for us will you.
