It deals primarily with the crash to desktop that is caused by lack of virtual address space.Due to the unique nature of how addresses are mapped differently on each machine this crash may happen at different places and times of the game, even loading a map, menu or waiting on an AI turn. If you try this fix, and you follow directions properly, and it doesn't help you then your crash is due to something else.

How do I do it?
Follow directions explicitly. I have seen people consistently skip steps or not read the directions properly so it doesn't work for them whne they don't do what it says. it's not as complicated as it sounds, I'm just being thorough.

APPLY THE WORKAROUND (juicy caramel center)

Requirements

Only real requirements is that you have atleast 2GB RAM. You don't need beyond that even though we are allowing addressing up to 2.5 GB. Also following instructions and being somewhat familiar with working with files in windows is required. Make sure you are using Vista SP1 or later. If not then you need this hotfix that fixes a major blunder with Vista address space - http://support.microsoft.com/kb/940105 [support.microsoft.com]
That's all, follow the 3 steps.

1) Prepare the operating system to be able to use beyone 2GB address space with a userva of 2.5GB (only 32 bit OS's need to do this): I am purposely using only 2500 for userva for specific reasons and any more will likely not be needed, as a result the kernel will have plenty of space to play in.

Windows 7/Windows Vista

* In Windows 7/Vista go to Start menu. Go to Accessories. Locate the command prompt shortcut and hover mouse over it. Right Click on the shortcut then select Run as Administrator.
* In the command prompt type this exactly: bcdedit /set increaseuserva 2500. Then hit enter.
* Make sure you get a message back confirming the change was made. To verify the entry is there you can type just bcdedit, hit enter, and you should see the entry now listed.
* Then close the command prompt. You just told Vista to increase user virtual address (userva) space to 2500MB.
* Changes take effect on reboot but don't reboot yet.

SUMMARY
We extended the user virtual address space in XP, Vista and 7 to 2500MB, so now applications can utilize up to that much if they are set to be Large Address Aware.
I just bought a gateway w an AMD Phenom 64 quad core, 8g ram, nvidia 9600gt 512mb vid card.
I am getting major graphical lag while playing all my games, even low resorce games like WoW, but im primarily refering to Black Ops.
I know my system should be Ok to run BO, but just for the hell of it I used the 'can my pc run it' tool, and my pc is off thier graph as far as recomended settings.
I have tried everything i can think of, all the drivers are up to date, drives defragged, disk cleanup, all that...my processor monitor is showing relativly low loads during gameplay, but when i run a system health report, there is a warning that the que is 2? I dont know too much about the technical aspects of PCs, so i have no clue what it means, but its the only warning im getting and everything else seems to be fine.
This is also on a completely fresh vista install w barely anything running on it at all. Again all drivers are up to date.
Im getting some sort of game lag though, it just doesnt look right or smooth, seems to be missing or skipping frames or something (not saying thats the problem, just trying to describe what im seeing) Resolution is 1400x900, which is my native resolution of my screen and what my desktop is set at.
I had NO problems running this game on my much less powerfull machine that had an Intel core.....This is the 1st time ive decided to go with AMD after many years of buying Intel machines, PLEASE tell me this isnt the problem.

ps sry about spelling and punctuation, im a horrible speller/typer on a brand new keyboard which makes it worse...lol

Like several other posts I've read, I'm interested in knowing if a new game on the market (i.e. Call of Duty: Black Ops) will run on a specific setup. If the game requires an AMD Phenom X3 8750 (operating at 2.4 GHz) or better, then how might I know what is "better"? An obvious answer is a newer Phenom, but I'm more curious about a processor with higher operating frequency instead of 3 or more cores.

In other words, if I purchased an Athlon II 220 (operating at 2.8 GHz) would that be "better" than the Phenom X3 8750? For example, Black Ops game specs suggest the game will run on a dual core Intel processor. I suspect it would also run on an Athlon II X2 240 (operating at 2.8 GHz). At what point does operating frequency become less important than the number of cores?

I'm looking at building a new box to run Black Ops. I prefer buying a motherboard with an AM3 socket type so I have more room to grow (to an X6 processor). I've got a very limited budget, so I'm trying to be careful about how I spend my money.

I would be happy if I had the same fps that I did with Vista which wasn't great but at least my games were playable. I made sure everything is up to date. I don't know what else to try. I hope there is some sort of software out there that will help or maybe someone on this forum will have some suggestions. I will put down my specs and hopefully get some response.
Hi all,

I want to get the PC version of COD:BO, but according to the Can You Run It site, my current Athlon X2 64 3800+ Dual 2.0GHz fails the minimum game spec of the Phenom II X3 8750 by what seems to be about 4GHz difference.

Rest of my system is:

GeForce 9600GT x 2 (running single card now though)
ASUS A8N-SLI SE Mobo w/ nForce4
2 GB DDR

So, would my box run BO?

Problem with upgrading is the mobo is Socket 939 (yes, old) and to get the fastest 939 CPU out there will still cost me over $200 online, for a 5 yr old chip! So I would have to drop about $2-300 for new CPU + mobo combo, which I don't really want to do right now...

Any ideas before I get the game and give it a shot?

Much obliged!

Ocelot

<begin quote>Electronic Arts has announced a new free to play Battlefield game, called Battlefield Play4Free, which will emulate a similar finance model to Battlefield Heroes but catering to hardcore gamers.

Described as basically a tweaked blend of Battlefield: Bad Company 2 and Battlefield 2, Battlefield Play4Free will feature maps from BF2, as well as weapons, classes and vehicles from BC2.

Battlefield Play4Free will use the same engine as Battlefield 2, Battlefield 2142 and Battlefield Heroes, though it will do away with the cartoon visuals of the latter. It will be a gritty military FPS with a modern setting - because there aren't enough of those around at the moment.

Battlefield Play4Free will, like Battlefield Heroes, be financed through microtransactions rather than advertising or retail sales. EA will sell player customisation items, as well as in-game advantages in one form or another.

'Five per cent of the audience buy stuff. 95 per cent of people never spend any money at all,' EA's Ben Cousins told Eurogamer.

'Five per cent want to customise their character, they want to look cool, they want a slightly cooler weapon, they feel they can get advantage over other players by buying stuff. Those guys fund the experience for everyone else. It's a classic free-to-play business model, which we're really comfortable with and we've got really good at now.'

EA has indicated plans to tie future Battlefield games together, including Battlefield Heroes and Play4Free, to encourage players to get involved with the franchise as a whole. One of the examples cited included unlocking extra in-game items in Play4Free when players reach a certain level in Heroes, or vice versa.

The closed beta for Battlefield Heroes will launch on 30th November, with an open beta planned for early next year. EA is currently accepting beta applications on the official website.</end quote>

Source link
