I just installed Windows 7, and decided to give Borderlands a go, but after 5-10 minutes of play, my whole computer freezes, except for the sound which keeps going like the is still running. I can't do control+alt+delete, nothing happens.

same here. But I don't even hear sound when it crashes. I suspect driver issue. I thought it was the video cards overheating so I reapplied new silver compound on the gpu's. Gonna try disabling crossfire to see if thats the problem.

I haven't had a single crash in this game, Win7 X64 with 5870 in Crossfire.  The only issue there is at the moment is that some textures are gray that shouldn't be.  Renaming the game to bioshock.exe is a workaround for that.

I had the same problem, but I read in the steam forums that setting the fan speed around 60% in catalyst control center.  It actually worked for me.

There's definitely an ATI Radeon 4x00 related issue going on with Borderlands that I've seen myself. You can only play for a few minutes before your PC hard locks itself.  Some people get the ATI drivers to reset themselves after a few, but other's don't.  Some folks have even tried the 9.11 beta drivers and those haven't helped either. We all seem to get texture corruption also.

The Steam and Gearbox forums have threads going on the issue:

http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?t=998381

http://gbxforums.gearboxsoftware.com/showthread.php?t=78815

My specs: Intel Core i7 3 GHz, 6 GB DDR3 RAM, 2 TB HD Space (RAID-0), Radeon 4870x2 w/9.10 Catalyst, Sound Blaster X-Fi, Win 7 x64.

My ATI Radeon 4850, 512mb has same crashing issue.  Doesn't happen every game, but Left 4 Dead only lasts about 5-40 seconds before vid card stops working, and had same problem in an old Halflife mod, "Age of Chivalry".  What happens is this: the monitor goes out like the card powers off, then it runs again but with a generic video driver.  Tells me the error is the ATI driver ati2dvag that caused the error.

GAMES THAT WORKED

1. Darkest Hour (mod for HL2)

2. Company of Heroes

GAMES THAT CRASHED:

1. Left 4 Dead

2. Age of Chivalry (mod for Halflife - the old one!)

STUFF I TRIED

Using Left 4 Dead as a test, I tried the following things to fix this based on various forum posts:

1. Run in windowed mode, no border = FAIL. Windowed mode = FAIL

2. Manually set fan speed at 60% in CCC = FAIL. Crashed at temp of 53C.

3. Turn down video settings in game = FAIL

4. Put freezer packs next to my vid card = FAIL

5. Uninstalled driver, reinstalled new 9.1 driver = FAIL

6. Uninstalled new 9.1 driver, installed old 8.9 driver = FAIL

7. Uninstalled Left 4 Dead, re-installed Direct X 9.0c, Reinstalled Left 4 Dead = FAIL

8. Ran memtest86 on each of my 4 RAM sticks, then all of them together, they all passed = FAIL

9. Prayed to Yumma Yumma, the god of food & pleasure = FAIL

10. Googled "recommended power supply for Radeon 4850" and found the answer = DOH!  However, upgraded to Corsair 750W that is "recommended" by ATI and FAIL.  Still crashing.

11. Did an MSI liveupdate to make sure my motherboard BIOS crap is all updated, and it is.

12. Installed all the drivers and codecs from Sapphire for the 4850 they made, and FAIL.

13. I'm confused at this point and don't know what to try next.

PLEASE HELP!

I have the same problem with Borderlands (and FYI also with Crysis Warhead).

Random black screen during game. Sound continues. It seems that the display ouput goes out of range. It surely is a graphics card problem. If I was the only one with this problem i´d say it probably would be a faulty graphics card, but this way it must be something else.

I´m running a brand new Asus HD4870 on a Intel Core i5 750 and Windows 7 32bits.

Any suggestions?

Boarderlands is an absolutely POS game that was poorly ported to the PC. Wait till they patch it before you play it or buy it. I kick myself everyday over the fact that I actually paid for it.

I also have the same issue. Mobility Radeon HD 4650.  This is absurd! I got the part where I have to get the key to go kill sledge (inside zone). It didnt crash it did not crash until I was there. It must have done the same crash 20+ times in a multiplayer game with my gf over lan. I thought it was a realtek issue but my other laptop with an nvidia 9300gs even though it runs like crap 800x600 it doesnt crash. Im running windows 7 64 fresh install. 6gb of ram and it also happens on damn near every ut3 engine game except for maybe deadspace. It happened also on farcry 2. If it is connected to my HDMI my 42 inch lcd just says loss of signal and i can hear the sound stuttering. I have to hold the power switch to reboot. Does it without HDMI just on the notebook monitor as well.  Things I have tried.

1. Reinstalling OS. (this happened on vista 64 as well as my new windows 7 64.

2. Overclocking, Underclocking etc. Tried and fail.

3. I cannot do the fan speed fix because of the mobility does not have overdrive and no tool allows me to control the fan speed.

4. 9.9 9.8 9.1 drivers. Ive tried these and they do the same thing. the 9.1 drivers eff up my monitors resolution too.

5. Disabling soundcard. (alot of people in other UT3 engine games said this fixes the issue.)

6. Running the game in a windows. Also with gpuz and hwmonitor open next to it to check the temps. Temps are very good. No overheating my notebook actually has an excellent cooling system stock in it. vaio fw series.

What the hell else can i do. ATI please fix this issue I buy all of these games and are unable to play any of them because of this issue.

1. Bioshock

2. Mass Effect

3. Borderlands

4. Far Cry 2.

5. Batman Arkham Asylum

Anyone else have any insight?

Yea if it works in Crysis and not borderlands don't think its ATI's fault. Because it isn't. Borderlands giving 1000's of PC users with both Nvidia cards and ATI cards all kind of hell because of how badly there port is.

First my specs are in my sig. I can run Borderlands fine with Cat 9.8 in xfire(just a very little bit of articacts every third of fourth time i run the game). In Cat 9.9 and 9.10 the artifacting is constant and I have to start the game a second time to get it to run because the first time i start the game after I start the pc looks like some sort of flashy disco miscolored attempt at brainwashing by the 9.9 and 9.10 drivers. After quiting the game and starting it the second time it runs fair. So for now I'm using the 9.8 drivers and it runs great. As for as being a badly ported game. There's so much pc game pirating going on now a days can you really blame some of the video game houses for not putting in enormous amounts of time making sure a game is perfectly ported to the pc.

Yeah I agree this issue doesnt have anything to do with borderlands because it happens on every unreal tournament 3 engine game. It must be ATI. Maybe its an issue we can take to epic games... Dont they make ut3 engine.

But then again Crysis uses their own engine CryEngine. So I can't blame Epic.

I've spent more time than I should have trying to get the Radeon HD4850 PCI-e to work right.  Going to return it.

Well I guess I should post in here..

I have had zero crashes or freezes in Borderlands since installation.

I run a 4870 with the fan set to 40% in overdrive.

Borderlands isn't a console port, it's a game developed initially on the PC and then ported to consoles before the final versions of either variety were finished. With the sole exception of the menus (which come later in the development process), there is absolutely nothing about this game that would lead one to think it was "poorly ported to PC".

I'm sorry that some of the posters here aren't able to play the game, but it runs great on my PC, and plays much better as well (I have PS3 and PC versions).

I may have a fix

After setting all of my clock speeds back to stock and disabling bloom and depth of field the crashes stopped. I was experiencing the crash where while opening lockers or containers the game would freeze but the sound continued. The computer locks and becomes unresponsive, ctrl alt delete doesn't do a thing, and 20 or so seconds later the whole screen fixes to a solid color followed by a hard reset.

I'm running a Phenom II X3 720

Ati Radeon 4890

and 4 GB of DDR3 1600 12800

all at 1920 x 1080, settings maxed
