Hey there everyone, I have bought a HD4870 which is a factory OC version. I've also checked my PSU and realised that I need a better one. So I looked up a bit of info and stumbled upon this - http://cgi.ebay.com.au/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=380170542349&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT What my question is that will it handle the GPU as it is 18 and 18 amps on the 12V rails? And another is that, if it does handle the power, the GPU requires two 6 pin connectors, which the PSU does, but they are with a 2 pin connector. Will I still be able to use it to power the GPU?

Hi, I wouldn't choose that CM eXtreme Power Plus 500W, since it's can't deliver the power that's written on the box while at the same time providing clean power without ripples/noises within ATX specification; ripples/noises that exceed the ATX specs can damage hardware. Here is a quote from the conclusion of Hardwaresecrets' review of the mentioned psu:
"Cooler Master eXtreme Power Plus 500 W is the perfect example to explain why maximum power isn’t everything. This power supply can really deliver 500 W, but with efficiency above 80% only when you pull between 40% and 60% load (between 200 W and 300 W) and electrical noise level above the maximum allowed if you pull 80% load or more (i.e. starting at 400 W). On the other hand, we have pricing. At USD 40 (or USD 30 if you buy at Newegg.com and don’t forget to fill-out the USD 10 mail-in rebate form), it is probably one of the cheapest “real” 500 W power supplies around. On the good side, we have a good number of SATA and peripheral power connectors for a low-end product. We can’t recommend this power supply, however if you are really on a budget this may be an option until you have money to buy a decent power supply for your PC. Compared to the 460 W model we have already reviewed, the main components are the same, with the switching transistors replaced with more powerful models. The printed circuit board, however, is different."
If you have to buy a Cooler Master psu, you can try out the Silent Pro series which are Enhance OEMs which means quality (Silverstone technology also uses Enhance OEMs for their high grade power supply units); the current CM eXtreme Power Plus series are made by Acbel Polytech which does make good power supplies (mostly the very high-end ones), but not this one. Also the picture shown at the eBay site is from the older model the eXtreme Power (i.e. non-Plus). The 500W eXtreme Power Plus only got 30 A MAX on the 12V and not 36 A which is described in the specs according to the mentioned eBay site. If you can, try to find the value/budget priced Corsair VX450W, a Seasonic OEM with 33 A on 12V, or the Corsair VX550W, a CWT OEM with 41 A on the 12V. A good alternative is the Antec Earthwatts EA-500 500W, also a good quality Seasonic OEM, but without the sleeved cables and it looks a bit generic (unlike the Corsair).
Hope this can help you,
Good luck! Edited: 11/07/2009 at 08:32 AM by TC-man |
