Hi Guys,

A problem with ATI cards in Windows Vista has ATI users in a twist at the moment, I guess a lot of you know about it.

When running games or full screen video, some users may be shown a message stating ATIKMDAG has stopped responding but was successfully recovered. In some cases, the system will continue to work as normal. Alternately, this error message may not result in the system being recovered and the system may need to be reset.

The source of the problem has been thrown into everyone's hands, mostly ATI getting the blame for bad drivers. Some kids are going as far as giving ATI the finger and drawing up petitions, wanting to stop everyone from buying ATI cards till the problem is resolved. It did however surface a few months ago that Vista is where the problem is.

I am glad to say that up till now, I have not had these problems with any of my machines; all being fitted with ATI cards, onboard Xpress200, 9200SE, X550, X1650, HD3870. Microsoft has released a hotfix supposedly fixing the issue, but I find that most users still complain after using the hotfix.

This is where you guys come in. If you by any chance experience this, please could you post your system specs in the following way. We are trying to pinpoint the problem and getting Microsoft to help us out. Please also note any overclocks.

CPU, Mobo, Ram, Graphics Card, OS, Driver version.

Example. Intel E6550 @ 2.33GHz, Intel DG31PR, 2Gb OCZ PC6400 ATI Edition, GeCube Hd3870 stock, Vista Home Premium 64Bit, ATI release 8.2.

I apprecieate your assistance.

Gee-Q

I've been getting the atikmdag error also, and I'm sure it's not because of bad hardware.

Thinkman,

Your answers in the forums shows you know something. It seems your trying to be part of the solution, so why does my statement bother you? This board is infested with people or "kids" rambling to ATI about problems that isn't ATI's fault. Think about it for the moment. ATI has been taken over by AMD. Now, they don't just concentrate on GPU's anymore, it's chipsets, CPU's and whatever Intel throws at them every day. ATI benifits from AMD and visa verca, but as with anything good in life it takes time. If you can see past that, try to help me lift up this board to something usefull, and just maybe Ruby or someone from ATI will see that it would benifit to assist here.

BTW, if you would, we could use someone like you on our boards. Register and log on if you like. It's a great bunch of people with plenty knowledge in every field of computing that waits to help anyone.

Gee-Q,

glad you took it like that ;-) You know, what would AMD/ATI do without this vast majority of computer freaks, playing exciting 3d games? IMO young fellows are the most important customers for video card manufacturers and they should have their chance, too. Finally they induced this constructive discussion, didn´t they?

I like it a lot that you are discussing probs in an structured manner, I´m backing it. It could help lots of people to find ideas where to look at and it may help AMD/ATI to improve their service - I know they are watching from behind.

I was a satisfied customer of ATI´s video cards ever since, put em in and it worked - and then I had this new HD2600XT AGP... But it works now, games like Q4 or D3 look exciting now and it´s a pleasure for me to tell mates how it went in my case.

...always a bit in a hurry, see ya.

How many of you use more than 1 monitors (Dual View) on 1 card? What are the resolutions?

i've got 2 main one @ 1280/1024, and secondary @ 1024/768.

i found this error never happened during games until i installed the vista sp1 beta. i've since taken it off and getting game crashes now
until recently, whenever this crash came about, it would try and 'recover' 4 or 5 times, then blue screen on me, but since the vista update, it threatens to crash but recovers :S dunno if thats any help to anyone

I run 1 x HD3870, dual display Dell LCDs. Primary is 19" @ 1280 x 1024, secondary is 17" @ 1280 x 1024. No mimic, secondary is extended.

I'm starting to see a trend here. Various CPU's Motherboards, Ram even different Vid cards on both AGP and PCI-E. 1 thing everyone has in common, Vista 64Bit. This is the trend everywhere I posted this.

Now, lets see. All of you please give me a step by step how you installed Vista.

Trial and error brought me to a conclusion with Vista, and every install I did after that works. I'll start another thread and link it here later on how to install Vista to stop this problem.

I trust you learned alot getting that 2600 to work.

Knowlegde is power and today, experience counts more than paperwork. Keep it up, maybe you and I can run this place.

I am also using vista 64 bit. I never had this problem until recently adding a second monitor and some new memory.

Given that a lot of people seem to think that it's related to the second monitor, I'm guessing it's that and not the memory. I unplugged the second monitor and we'll see what happens.

But ffs, what a joke. AMD, MS, or both seriously dropped the ball here. If I'm going to beta test, I should get paid for it.

I'm unable to play with any games under Vista Business 64. Every time I try to do something the ATIKMDAG error appears!

My system:
Asus P5E3-Deluxe
2GB DDR3 CORSAIR 1333Mhz C9
2 Asus HD3870 in crossfire configuration
Intel E8400
Windows Vista Business 64bit
Catalyst 8.2
Seagate 750GB SATA2 7200rpm with NCQ

I tried anything: changed the ram, removed one 3870, installed all the microsoft patches released in November 2007 for this issue...

I think the main problem is and will remain Windows Vista and not only the video driver because I had the same issue with my previous computer: Intel E6700, 4GB RAM DDR2 Corsair, EVGA N680i, EVGA 8800GTX ULTRA.

So both Nvidia and ATI have the same problem. In my humble opinion they should work with Microsoft to find a solution. I'm bored and tired! I'm thinking to re-install Windows XP Pro and leave my Vista until all these issues are gone :-(

Bye,
Max

Hey guys, I like this little discussion here. I have the same problem with atikmdag.

Specs:
Coolermaster 850w psu
Asus a8v-e se mobo
3gb ddr 400 ram
2xWD 500GB in RAID0
AMD dual-core opteron 2.0ghz
ATI AIW 1900
htomega claro 7.1 plus sound card
Vista Business x64

The problem occurs mostly when I play 3d games: COD4 and Frozen Throne. I noticed that frozen throne, like the name suggests, freezes more often than COD4. I also found that, if I disable everything that shows up on my desktop: sidebar, object dock, messenger... it eases the problem a little. I won't get as many crashes. Actually, rare crashes in COD and occasional crashes in Warcraft III.

I had no problem at all in XP Pro x64 btw.

Oh, forgot to mention that I tried with CCC 8.1 and 8.2. Problem exists in both versions. Too tired to try other versions for now.

Hey guys, I took out 1G of ram and now left with only 2G ( 1G x 2 ) and the problem is gone! Dunno the reason for this since 3G worked perfectly fine under xp x64.

Hope this helps some of you.
