Hey guys, i just bought new PC with HD4870 and i got a problem..
first here is it: Core 2 Quad Q9300, 1333MHz, s775, 6MB EP45-DS3R s775 C2Q 1600Mhz, Intel P45, DDR2 1200, 2xPCI-E DDR2 800mhz 2x2GB OCZ Vista Upgrade Copper Mirrored XTC Heatspreader HD 4870 512MB GDDR5 DX10.1 HDTV 2xDVI PCI-E Ezcool Ps-1000 500watt HD 500GB Samsung now, i installed GTA:SA and SA-MP.. i'm enters to samp. playing like 15 min and then my GTA turns to alot of small cubes (i cant do nothing, the game is stuck) and after like 5-10 secs its turns to a black screen... so, I installed XP on my pc and played from there.. but again... Puff.... I don't know what the problem.... I can play crysis, bf2 and a lot of other game.. but GTA? I can play 2-15mins... the version of gta is good, I played the same version on my old PC.... i tried to do one more test... I set all the parameters to low and did bad resolution and played for 25 minuets... then set all to high and good resolution and played for more 15 min.. then set it all to very high and good resolution played 15 min and crashed.... the crash video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NImhGgDLQYo&feature=dir Edited: 08/18/2008 at 07:25 PM by AMD Game Moderator |

My crash looks very similar to Zakash's except it only occurs in World of Warcraft. Sometimes my screen goes black after a few moments of the game freezing and being torn apart into small, misplaced squares across the screen. Sometimes my screen goes black right away. Sometimes it displays a randomly colored texture on the screen. Sometimes after a crash, the VPU Recover kicks in and I can continue my game but it will usually crash shortly afterwards (within a minute or two). There are about 10 other posts similar to this one on the front page of this board alone. I'm completely at a loss as to what could be causing the crash. As an entry-level computer technician I know that it's not my memory, CPU, power supply, or any other component causing the crash. My video card crashes in any machine I place it into. Are the cards bad or are the drivers bad? |

I have a similar, if not identical problem ... Zakash, thanks for posting the video! Here are my specs: Q9450 Asus Rampage Formula - flashed to latest BIOS OCZ PC-8500 Reaper 4GB 2 HD 4870's in crossfire, with Artic Accelero S1 Rev. 2 OCZ Pro Xstream 1000W PSU Vista x64 ultimate Idle GPU Temp: ~ 50 C. I've tested on S.T.A.L.K.E.R. as well as Furmark, and the same thing happens. Things will be working smoothly for a few minutes, and then the screen goes black and loses the signal, but the system continues to operate. I noticed the GPU temp while running Furmark just before crash was 70 C. Not exactly overheating, IMHO. Out of desparation, I've upped my PCI-E freq. to 105, and tweaked my memory timings/voltage to the manufacturer's specs. I don't know if the 3rd party cooler is the culprit, or if there's an underlying driver issue. I've tried various versions of Catalyst, all to no avail. I'm at a loss, and there doesn't seem to be any "quick fix" out there yet...hopefully we can resolve this soon!

It seems lots of people are having particular issues in games, mine was very similar. I ran memtest, prime95 and more testing progs, all components and everything was fine. Installed a new PSU and after market cooler. My Prob was iffy Video Ram Enter ATI overdrive and downspeed you Video Ram, run GTA SA and see if its stable. These cards either have dodgy RAM or it could just be a driver issue (most likely) ------------------------- |

I've got the same damn problem, however it only happens on de_nuke in CSS... Been through countless days of formats, driver installs, different PC setups, updated all drivers, bios, hardware etc... Even tried Vista, using as many seperate drivers as i possibly could within XP or Vista. Still, no fix. I even returned my first card, but the EXACT same issue persists with the replacement. (It is a Sapphire RADEON HD4870 512MB-GDDR5). I've spent countless days on this bs, had enough so it's getting ANOTHER return, and i'll be switchin back to the n... Thanks for the first-time experience ATi, loved it. |

I get this exact problem but when playing the game Eve online windowed (havent tried fullscreen yet). Ironicaly it seems to run crysis perfectly. Specs: Core 2 2.13 ghz, saphire HD 4870, Intel D97XBX2 mobo, onboard sigmatel sound card (STAC9247D), windows MCE service pack 2 Strangely this problem coincided with what apears to be a hard drive problem as of yet im not sure if they are related. Sorry for brief post but I don't have time to go in depth now. |

I have tried over a whole week trying to fix this problem, still havn't come down to any solution. I had come to the decision of returning the card (would be my 2nd time) and getting a GTX280 but the price made me decide otherwise. So even with these problems, i've decided to keep my HD4870. Sorry i couldn't be of any help, i have filed a ticket to support, still waiting for a reply, but it's been over a few days... I believe it simply comes down to that it is a driver issue with perhaps an incompatibility somewhere...I'm just hoping on the official 8.8 catalyst, that the issue gets adressed...but i doubt it. Having tried what i believe to be everything i possibly can, i too am at a complete loss as to what to do. |

well aperently 8.8 doesnt fix it cuz I'm still getting these wierd crashes. On a side note they apear to happen more to me when I've only just started my computer, almost as if the GPU needs to warm up to work properly. |

i think it is the problem of Driver or Game |

It must be the Driver |

well, its gameS problem not game... if its the driver, so i think its Sapphire problem.. they have to give support and tell the costumers about that! its stupid.... i lost day for change my VGA to new one, and the same problem! i hope they will switch my 4870 to gigbyte or MSI... you can't blame the PSU, CPU, or any thing else... i tried any thing! like is said, i'm will bring another 4870, but this time by another compony to check if its Sapphire problem or ATI. btw, to wierd that on youtube and ATI all of the guys that have the same problems with 4870, got sapphire one... any way, i will update you soon |
