Well, it appears I am not alone in my anger and frustration, I too am running Vista 64, and Asus Motherboard(Blitz Formula) and 4850s in CF and since the 8.10 hotfix and now 8.11 and can't get to the desktop without a ATIKMDIAG.SYS BSOD

Come ON ATI, do you not test vista 64 drivers on vista 64 platforms? its not like Asus isnt the biggest mobo maker in the world.

You dont know how many hours I have spent trying to install these last 2 driver sets and then the hours trying to recover my machine after they trash it.

go do a search and find that this is a common problem for vista 64 users trying to run CF

I am about done with ATI

Absolutely absurd.

This is not just limited to Asus boards... although I am curious, are you guys all running p45 based motherboards??

I am running a Gigabyte GA-EP45-DS3R and I am getting the same problem since the second 8.10 Hotfix.

I am unable to boot into windows using either the 8.10 hotfix (second one) or the 8.11 drivers. I get the same atikmdag.sys BSOD.

I Took one of my cards out of the system and windows booted up just fine, so this is definitely a crossfire issue, and Im pretty sure its also definitely related to Vista 64. I am also curious though if it is related to the P45 chipset... unfortunately, I have no way to test it.

I was in contact with ATI Tech support and they were unable to troubleshoot it. I need to send over my msinfo file so they can try to reproduce the problem, will send tonight. Hopefully someone over there will look at it and actually be able to reproduce or fix this and not make us wait another month (or more) for updated, working drivers.

I too am getting tired of ATI. I bought the 4850's after last using an x1950 Pro AGP. Driver updates broke the AGP support a while before I bought a new PC... didnt want to get ATI again, but the new cards just seemed like such a good deal... they dont quite feel worth it at this point.

Crossfire has been nothing but buggy and a big headache for me so far, I hope others are having a better time with it than I am.

it is not related to P45,

i have X38 and i check peeps with X48, i and they have the same problem,

i also found out peeps having the same problem on vista 32

so basicaly it is totaly driver based, if i was in usa i would probably sue microsoft for giving whql certification to these drivers

Well im glad to hear that yours is working fine... however, based on the information I have seen so far, Im getting confident that this is only happening to people who are running 4850's in crossfire on vista 64. Im not sure if its even more isolated then that, but so far everyone who has had the problem has been running 4850's, not other cards.

Though, if anyone is getting this issue that is not running a 4850, speak up, bejito are you running 4850's or different cards?

Spyral, I did not run a driver cleaner this time, however, I can tell you that the BSOD is not caused by any driver conflicts from left over drivers. I reformatted about a week ago, and the first ATI driver I installed was 8.10 hotfix 2 (8.551) and I still got the BSOD, even on a fresh windows installation.

I used Driver Sweeper, as I did with Catalyst 8.10 and older without any problems. Tried today with fresh Vista x64 SP1 install, BSOD again, back to 8.10 (not hotfix).

Crosfire users

Go to the ATI icon (the one in the taskbar)
Then right click on it
Go to your GPU (select primary one)
And you will see a crossfireX tab
There it is

Hope it helped

i'm running a CF of 4850 on P5E (X38) and these drivers totaly sux i can't wait for amd getting new drivers that actualy have no problems, how couldnt they have tested the most common crossfire card (4850) with the most common crossfire setup (P5E/maximus formula/rampage formula) on vista 64 do they really think we would spend so much money to run it on a crappy 32 bit OS not even able to use fully our 4Gb of memory ?

Good to hear, but it looks like the problem is related to running 4850's in crossfire only... maybe this thread title should change.

Hi Everybody,

Here is a little summary of my very very small experience:

I always start my tests from a complete fresh install of Windows Vista Ulitmate SP1 x64 english.

Configuration:

- Gigabyte GA-X38-DQ6

- 2 x 4850 Sapphire no OC no mod

- 4Gb of RAM OCZ

- Antec NeoHE 550W

Installing 8.11 driver with bridge installed (one or two) always BSOD on Windows Vista first reboot after installing drivers.

Installing with or without CCC has no impact on BSOD. Installing 8.11 driver always finished with BSOD on reboot.

Removing all XFIRE Bridge prevent from BSOD.

I am able to install 8.11 driver and CCC without any issues when no bridges are installed.

BSOD seems to be linked to ATIKMDIAG.SYS file comming with display driver and not CCC.

Mine (coming with official 8.11 drivers) has been build on Oct 29.

Special notes for X38/X48 users, you may on a Fresh Vista install see an unrecognized SM Bus device in device manager.

In that case go download inf file for Intel Chipset on Intel website at the following URL, it will solve the issue:

http://downloadcenter.intel.com/filter_results.aspx?strTypes=all&ProductID=816&OSFullName=Windows+Vista*+64&lang=eng&strOSs=150&submit=Go%21

Do not know how to ease diagnosis of this issue by ATI.

Best regards,

Arkhaan

Hi Ryta,

Downloaded the one mentionned (Inf packaged) in my post.

Do not know if it answers your question.

Regards,

Arkhaan

Just to give some more inputs.

After reading multiples forums and posts, the issue seems to concerne 4850 GPU used in cross fire regardless mobo brand and chipset. (X38, X48, P45, P35, ...)

Could it be a bios related issue?

Mine is:

VER011.003.000.000.029117

Maybe Golden Sample or new release users may not be facing this issue.

Best regards,

Arkhaan

After searching other websites I would concur that the 8.11 BSOD has 2 things in common

Vista 64 and 4850s in Crossfire

I will reiterate that I am able to run my Asus EAH4850s in crossfire using catalyst 8.10 but not the hotfix or the 8.11s

I can run all Catalysts as a single 4850

my other hardware to compare to others systems for possible further similarities

Asus blitz formula, q6600, X-fi Gamer, Crucial TracerX, PCP&C 750W

my method of install

---------------------------------

run catalyst uninstall from control panel

reboot in safe mode

uninstall adapters and driver through device manager

delete ati directory

run driversweeper

reboot

allow vista to install default adapter drivers

reboot

install new catalysts

reboot

note: i have tried this method with both crossfire cable connected during process, disconnected during process and all result in ATIKMDIAG.SYS BSOD upon reaching desktop if the cable is connected.
