I have been trying to find a way of installing Catalyst 9.3 in Windows 7 to support my X700 AGP card. After a bit of trial and error, I have found a way that this can be done. This not only installs the 9.3 drivers but also allows use of Catalyst control center. This method should work for all legacy cards supported by catalyst 9.3.

There are five Step to the installation although step five is optional.

Step 1: Start the installation as normal upto main installation then cancel. This will extract the driver files to your hard drive.

Step 2: navigate to C:\ATI\Support\9_3_vista32_win7_32_dd_ccc_wdm_enu\pakages\drivers\display\LH_INF. Open in notepad CL_76828.inf and look for the following entry;

[Manufacturer]
%ATI% = ATI.Mfg, NTx86.6.0, NTx86.6.1

edit it to read

[Manufacturer]
%ATI% = ATI.Mfg, NTx86.6.0

and save

Step 3: manually install the display driver by clicking on start and entering Device Manager in the search box select your graphics adaptor and update driver select the second option and have disk browse to the inf file you saved in Step 2. Windows will display a warning but click yes

Step 4: Navigate to; C:\ATI\Support\9_3_vista32_win7_32_dd_ccc_wdm_enu and run setup this will install the Catalyst control center without error. reboot and hey presto

Step 5: Not strictly needed but will save you having to do the above again if you have to re-install Windows 7, save the ATI folder to a USB drive or CD. Just follow steps 3 & 4 in any order.

And that is it, hope this helps...

I have a Radean x1300 card on a 32-bit system. Will your steps work exactly for me as well? Will I need to change [Manufacturer] %ATI% = ATI.Mfg, NTx86.6.0 at all?

Thanks!

Hi swevrywhere,

My method should work on all the so called "ATI legacy cards" supported by Catalyst 9.3 and should give the same features as in Vista. However I could only test it on the X700 AGP card.

Try it and see, if it works for you or not, let us know as it will help others....

Hi MerlinUK,

I wonder if you can help.

I have a Mobility x700 gfx card in my laptop and have followed the steps in your guide above to try and install the drivers for Windows 7.

Currently, Windows 7 doesn't seem to recognise the gfx card as it is labelled as "standard vga graphics adapter" in Device Manager.

When I try to install the driver as per your guide, once I've located the folder contaning the modified file I am presented with a message telling me that the system has the most up-to-date software for the VGA graphics adapter.

Not sure how to get the system to recognise that the adapter is an ATI Mobility x700.

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance/

It seems ATI do not support the Mobility versions of this card now, but if you download the latest drivers for your laptop you may be able to modify that .INF to work instead. worth a try ...

You could use my method, but I don't Know why, as the HD3650 AGP card should be supported without the Mod's....

I have AGP version of Radeon 3650.

Unfortunetely, Ati haven't made AGP Hotfix drivers for Windows 7 yet, only AGP Hotfix for Vista. I'll wait till the end of the next week and if there is no Catalyst 9.5 AGP Hotfix drivers for Windows 7 then I will have to use your method to make windows 7 drivers work for my AGP card.

Thanks for the input, I will wait before I upgrade my X700 also AGP. I was thinking of getting an AGP HD3650 in July... In the meantime you could try my method on the Catalyst 9.3 and manually install the drivers....

I have an x300 card on a Dell Inspiron now running Windows 7 RC.  After following your instructions I was able to install the driver without any issues.

As to question about other drivers, like the x1300, there were about two dozen drivers in this inf.  My guess is it should work.

Thanks to MerlinUK for the research and sharing the results.

Charles

What about Win 7 RC x64? I followed the steps indicated above, using the .inf file that seemed closest to what you were talking about (file name is different), but driver update doesn't seem to want to cooperate. Every time I try it, it gives me this message:

"The best driver software for your device is already installed.

Windows has determined the driver sofware for your device is up to date.

RADEON 9700 PRO (Microsoft Corporation - WDDM)"

Frankly, I don't care if Windows thinks that is the best. When I try to use the straight 9.3 installer, it installs everything but the display driver. I don't understand why it's giving me such hassles, the Catalyst driver installed just fine in Win7 Beta 7000. Any thoughts?

Edit: the .inf file provided is "CH_76829.inf" and the driver is "9_3_vista64_win7_64_dd_ccc_wdm_enu"

Confirmed. I have the same problem with my Radeon 9800 pro.

Ok, I feel dumb now, but I figured it out. These are MerlinUK's instructions, with a few slight changes:

Installing the Catalyst 9.3 Legacy Driver in Windows 7 RC x64

Step 1:

-Run the driver installer, letting it unpack the installer files. After it has unpacked, cancel in installation.

Step 2:

-Navigate to "C:\ATI\Support\9_3_vista64_win7_64_dd_ccc_wdm_enu\Driver\Packages\Drivers\Display\LH6A_INF\"

-Open "CH_76829.inf" in notepad, and find the following entry:

[Manufacturer]
%ATI% = ATI.Mfg, NTamd64.6.0, NTamd64.6.1

-Change the entry to:

[Manufacturer]
%ATI% = ATI.Mfg, NTamd64.6.0

-Save, and close the file.

Step 3:

Manually install the driver:

  1. -Open Device Manager
  2. -Select display adapter, right click, select "Update Driver Software..."
  3. -Click "Browse my computer for driver software"
  4. -Click "Let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer"
  5. -Click "Have Disk..."
  6. -Click "Browse...", navigate to CH_76829.inf, click "OK"
  7. -The model of your graphics card should appear in the box, select it, and click "Next..."
  8. -The driver should have installed properly.

Step 4:

-Navigate to "C:\ATI\Support\9_3_vista64_win7_64_dd_ccc_wdm_enu\Driver\", and run "Setup.exe"

-This should install Catalyst Control Center. That's it!

Many thanks to MerlinUK for the initial work-around. You saved me a lot of frustration! I hope my version helps to clarify a few points, especially for those of us w/ Win7 RC x64. DavidP, let me know if these steps work for you.

BTW- I have tested this method with the CCC driver package, and with the driver only package. Both work just fine. The directory for the driver only package is:

"C:\ATI\Support\9_3_vista64_win7_64_dd\Packages\Drivers\Display\LH6A_INF\"

I followed your instructions word for word and it is still giving me a "device not working properly message." I made several attempts with no success. I'm not too worried about it because I'm waiting for my Radeon HD 4850 to come in the mail, but I'd still like to get this working so I don't throw my PC out the window. I'm stumped as to what the problem could be, it worked fine on XP.

Sorry to hear about that! I haven't seen that error. My issue was getting Windows to let me install the driver that I wanted to install. At least you have a new card coming that isn't legacy. Keep your hands off your comp until it shows up!

I stumbled across this thread via Google, thank goodness.  I have a Sapphire-branded X1650 Pro AGP and have been dealing with random Windows 7 (32-bit) crashing for a couple of weeks using the default Microsoft driver.  Had the same problems installing 9.3 as everyone else.

Just wanted to report in and say that MerlinUK's method worked for my setup.  Thanks!

ok so I tried this with minimum sucess.

Running RC7100 and trying to install legacy drivers per your instructions for my Sapphire X1650 Pro 512mb agp card.

Problem I been having is when I manual install the driver I eaither can't find my card listed or it says I have the most current driver or whatever. I did however get CCC and the 9.3 DD legacy driver installed using the 9.3 Legacy XP package rather than the "9_3_vista32_win7_32_dd_ccc_wdm_enu" pack. then CCC loaded like it was supposed to along with the driver.

Problem with that is it totaly jacked up my resolution and many of Windows 7 display features such as my bottom task bar couldn't be set back to transparent along with the way windows were displayed. Think it messed up the themes or something.

Anyway, how do I get both my DD and CCC to work using the correct package without losing any of Window7's standard effects? I love the way Window7 looks "out of box" and dont want my DD to change that for the sake of playing my games.

please assist me in any way you can.

thanks ~Dan

HI, and thank you very much for your guide!

I had no problem installing the display driver on Windows 7 (Radeon 9800 Pro), it installed perfectly, but when I ran Setup.exe to install CCC it did not install it, only CIM and C++ 2005. do you have any suggestions as to what to do to install CCC?

    Thanks in advance,

        Pat

Hi MerlinUK

i try method you suggest, but it doesn't work! I have a 9600XT AGP ATI card and I use a prerelease - wddm 1.0 downloaded by windows update. I use Windows 7 RC 32 bit. If I try your method, I can install the driver but when I restart windows the screen becomes full of coloured pixel and i must reset my pc. Have you any hint?
