Hello. I'm the unlucky owner of a Radeon 9600 PRO and Windows 7. I did everything by the book, installed the drivers that AMD-ATI recomands tryed with 9.8 then 9.3 then 9.3.1 then 9.8 againe and so on till i tried like every Vista driver that is out there. The driver itself is installing verry nice, even ccc is working good but the problem appears when i restart my pc. When i hit the logon screen (there where you have to enter your account password) the image is garbled, some vertical distorsion appear and i cant undestand a thing from my screen. Now... i readed about these problem on these forum and on some others and i would not post here (where i wont get support from adminds since they wont reply for legacy cards problems) but there is a strange part of these problem. If i put my pc on Sleep mode (when it does that garbled screen) and then wake it up the problem disappear and everything is working like it was in XP or Vista. And i mean everything, OpenGL, D3D, CCC i can use all of them ultil the next restart when i have to put my pc in sleep againe and wake it up againe to unscramble my screen. I have to mention that i use an ASUS MB P5P800 that uses Intel 865PE-ICH5. I hope that someone can give an idea of whats wrong and thanks reading these post. |

Disable AGP fast write (and possibly other similar settings) in the bios of the motherboard. I tried a 9600 pro and a 9800 pro with W7 + 9.8L but never had similar issues. I always keep AGP fast write off, it doesn't work with ATI cards. ------------------------- CPU: AMD Phenom II X4 810 | RAM: Kingmax 4GB DDR2 800 | MoBo: MSI K9A2 CF | GPU: Sapphire HD 4850 512MB | PSU: PC Power & Cooling Silencer 750 Quad | OS: W7 Pro x64 RTM |

I read the manual of your bios and I couldn't find the setting either. Strange, lame asus. The only thing you can try is setting the AGP aperture to 128 or 256 and reinstalling the drivers. Or you can try an external utility but they may not work with Vista/7. Look here and try a few things. ------------------------- CPU: AMD Phenom II X4 810 | RAM: Kingmax 4GB DDR2 800 | MoBo: MSI K9A2 CF | GPU: Sapphire HD 4850 512MB | PSU: PC Power & Cooling Silencer 750 Quad | OS: W7 Pro x64 RTM |

Thanks for another reply and for your time to read my bios manual. I did tryed PowerStrip from the link you give me, i disabled AGP fast write, but i didnt had any effect Now, i have AGP aperture size to 256. If i change it on lower, my video card is not recognised on windows enymore, the OS is shutting it down (at least thats what it says on Device Manager). Edited: 11/01/2009 at 12:23 PM by Antz |

Ok so i took all the drivers that are avaleble for download on amd-ati site and got the conclusion: 8.1- is working (problem doesnt appear)| 8.2- working| 8.3- working| 8.4- working| 8.5- not working at all| 8.6- not working at all| 8.7- working| and from 8.8 till 9.8 (that means 8.9, 8.10, 8.11, 8.12, 9.1, 9.2, 9.3) the problem described in my first post appears. I cant install at all 8.5 and 8.6, donno why. From 8.8 probably ati changed someting in theyr driver and its not compatible with 9600 series... Enyway, i'm happy that i found a solution and ofc i'm sad cuse i rly need to buy a new pc. Thanks for replying Eydee! Edited: 11/01/2009 at 03:56 PM by Antz |

Hi Antz,
I have got same problem with my radeon 9600xt 128mb. I now use a driver downloaded by windows update, ati radeon 9600 prerelease wddm 1.0 driver. I wold like to use 9.8 catalyst but your problem appears also for my pc. Also I use windows7. However it is strange you cannot install catalyst 8.12 for vista. It should work on your pc becuse it is the same driver of the arti radeon 9600 prrelease wddm 1.0 driver. If the problem at startup can be solved going on sleep mode, i think can be solved. I didn't know that in this way the problem could be solved.
I will search a solution, and if I have news I will tell you.
