Hi - I noticed, that some people seem to have this problem yet have received no help so far:

I was using Catalyst 8.10 in Vista 64bit.

1. problem:

Now I installed win7 (64bit) and downloaded the newest Catalyst Suite. After the installation I noticed that lowest possible fan speed was 32% instead of 20%. My ATi Radeon fan is so loud I NEED to pull it down to 20% (which works perfectly fine with windows, internet, movies and older games).

It took me 2.5 hours to find the only catalyst software that offered 20% fan speed: 8.10.

2. problem:

However, when I restart my PC, the catalyst suite has DISAPPEARED from the tray bar and restarting the software has NO EFFECT whatsoever (although ccc.exe is executed according to msconfig and the task manager!).

What I need:

I want a new catalyst version with the option to pull down fan speed to 20 percent in ATi Overdrive. (Manually editing the profile.xml won't work :-( )

OR Catalyst 8.10 but it should still be there everytime I start my PC!

Thank you very much

P.S.:  a REASON, why 20% fan speed is not allowed anymore in Catalyst would be quite interesting, too.

Its always been a minimum of 20% for me on any version of the Windows 7 drivers and any card I have used.

O.K. now THIS is strange!

Overdrive just offers me a slidebar going from 32% to 100%.

Setting the fan speed to 20% in the profile.xml has no effect - the software accepts only fan speeds from 32 to 100! (Only exception: CCC 8.10)

I am using a ATI Radeon 4580, Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit, 4GB RAM, 19" ViewSonic Monitor

The Duty Cycle Min % is set in the cards BIOS. Different cards have different minimum settings depending on manufacturer and what HSF was used. My minimum on an ASUS 4850 is 24% set in the cards BIOS. There may have been a driver overide for some cards that were overheating in order that you couldn't set too low a fan speed. Try MSI afterburner which can use a software overide for fan speeds. Don't use Cat 8.10 for Win7.

The level of control differs as each card is included in an update. The 4870X2 for example was never updated, so always has a minimum of 20%. My XFX HD4830 was updated as of around Catalyst 9.5-9.6, and the minimum was raised in that driver onwards from 20 to 41%. Seems your card was added in the latest driver release with a minimum of 32%. Unfortunately I don't think you can change this unless you roll back to an earlier driver or flash your BIOS to make the card show up as an unedited version.

O.K. Now here is the reply I WANTED to give:

Ah, thank you - that sounds quite reasonable.
Where exactly am I able to change any settings in my BIOS? (am having a ASUS P5Q Wifi deluxe).
And why shouldn't I use 8.10 with Win7?

Here's the reply I have to give now and what maybe answers question No.1 of myself:

WHAT THE F******!?!? What's going on here!? 8.10 loads normal with Windows - everything is quiet. The moment I log on to this forum, and game.amd.com loads, CCC freaks out! The very second, my fan speed is set up to 36% and Catalyst has the interface of 9.x!!! This is more than weird! Is there an alternative to Catalyst?

The BIOS of the card not the motherboard BIOS.

Update: A game (or windows update) changed the minimum fan speed to 32%. It just jumped right after I started the game (it's a newer game I play with 36% fan speed -> it jumped to 40%)

All I want is to let my fan run on 20% (in windows/internet/older applications) so I don't get the feeling somebody is standing next to me talking loudly. Please help me.

Did you give MSI afterburner a try as I previously said. Works with all makes of cards.

I did. And it looks pretty cool. Yet the moment I drag the slide to something below 32% (in MSI Afterburner 25% is the lowest possible), it snaps back to 32%.

And the 20% fan speed minimum changes to 32% occasionally (let's say every fourth started application.

I'm desperate - I want to run my fan below 30% :-(

In Windows 7, that is.

Catalyst 8.10 w/ 8.10 driver lasts for ~3-4 restarts

Catalyst 8.10 w/ 9.x driver lasts only until the restart

I need to check that in CCC, you have unlocked Overdrive and selected Enable Manual Fan Control than set it to it's lowest. It shouldn't still jump about like that.

Hi Rik55! Thanks for the advise, but Afterburners slider snaps back to min. 32% if I drag it below it. If "manual fan control" is checked or not :-(

THank you anyway. There got to be a solution. 8.10 can't be it, however: I have to reinstall it after every second reboot or after every Windows Update.

Problem solved!

I enforced the BIOS approach. I found a way to access and alter the BIOS and manually changed the minimum fan speed. After flashing the BIOS CCC would eventually allow me to set the speed to 20%.

Thanks for the hint.

And my temperatures are perfect:
Idle/video temperature at 20% 40°C
Older games at 20%: 45-48°C
Newer games at 36%: 54-57°C
