I have an XFX 7970 DD running under both Windows 7 and Windows 8. In general my main display is a 24" Sony Computer Monitor on the DVI port, but sometimes I like to connect my 65" Sony TV to the HDMI port.

For some bizzare reason when I connect the HDMI port Windows and/or the 7970 decides that this is going to be display 1, and the DVI port becomes display 2. This causes all sorts of problems because the TV is not in the same room, and besides, shouldn't I get to choose which is display 1 and 2.

Also, Windows does not give enough options to configure the desktops the way I want - which is really frustrating.

I have not tried the displayport connections yet, so I have no idea which displays they will get assigned to in Windows.

Is there any documentation anywhere which describes what is actually going on? Is there any way in Catalyst to control which port is assigned to which display?

Are you leaving the TV (HDMI) connected all the time or are you plugging it in as needed?

If it's anything like mine, if you leave it connected and set the preferred monitor, monitor arrangement in VECC and save that as a preset your problems will disappear.

Sometimes I leave it connected all the time, but often I have to unplug it. For example, if I boot Windows 8 it decides that the HDMI is where the desktop will be and then I have to disconnect the HDMI. Or on Windows 7, if I want to play a game or run Second Life, it selects Display 1 (HDMI) and there are no settings to say otherwise.

I do not know what you mean by "monitor arrangement in VECC"

Vision engine control center... which is installed when you install your video card drivers. Unless you deslect it. 

You can arrange your displays and it will save what you want for display 1 and 2. And it should do it for both operating systems. 

Although since windows 8 is still in beta it may not work correctly. But I know it works for me. As I have 3 screens and I would be extremely annoyed if I had to rearrange my desktop every time I switched OS's.
