I have a 4850 and a 6850 card in my computer, on Vista 32, with a bunch of monitors attached.

The auto-update made everything connected to the 4850 go black, logically.
With 12.6 it looks like I can either install the 2/3/4000 series driver, or the 5/6/7000 series, not both at the same time.

Is reinstalling 12.4 my only option, or are there better solutions?

AMD did recently change the way drivers get updated.  The HD4000 series and older products are considered legacy products now.  The HD5000 series and newer are considered current.  They each now use different drivers.

Catalyst 12.6 for the HD4000 & older is a different 12.6 than the ones posted for the HD5000 series & newer.

Release notes for Catalyst 12.4.  It was the last driver before it changed:
